I've set up the alias called 'PS Mimir', and I'm intending to use it as a tool to introduce the setting to the players, so divulging both player knowledge and character knowledge.

The easiest introduction point of entry for a player that is not familiar is starting as a 'prime', in other, an inhabitant of one of the 'normal' worlds (such as Golarion), that ended up on a different plane (most likely in Sigil, for story purposes) for some reason.

Lithrac manages to salvage the conversion effort that was made from the original 2nd edition setting to the third edition setting. I've received the files, and I'll be linking them from the Mimir's profile page (the first one, which has a basic explanation of the multiverse, is already up). It's a lot of information, so don't panic if you don't catch everything all at once. I'm creating a summary that I'll add to the profile page of the Mimir.

I'll try and do my best to capture both the content and concepts of the setting, but this works best if you ask questions about what is unclear to you.

---

I thought I'd give some idea on character creation. I'm thinking of a standard 20 point buy system, and basically allowing anything that is PFS legal, with stuff on the non-legal list open for discussion. Being optimal is not an issue (this is not PFS), but I would advice creating a character that can at least express it opinion. My hunch is that a purely 'gritty fighter' type won't have a lot of fun (but your mileage may vary).

I've been asked about the synthesist summoner. My thought: I've never seen one, it's supposed to be pretty powerful, and it may have ... eh... unexpected side effects (which in my view nerf the summoner by quite an extreme bit).

Sigil and Summoning:

By far the most famous property of Sigil is its imperviousness to any sort of magical entrance or exit. No forms of teleportation, summoning, or planar transit spells will allow a person to enter Sigil from without or exit it from within, even that of the gods. The only way to enter the city at all is to do so through a portal, which can form within any bounded space in the city. Teleportation and summoning within the city, however, still functions fine; one can summon a creature from elsewhere within the city, or can teleport from one location in the city or another.

Interns of races, the planes are home to most standard races, as well as the more exotic ones. For flavour, the outsider races work really well. Two particular races that were part of the original setting are not represented by the rulebooks of Pathfinder: Bariaur and (rogue) Modron. Particularly the latter used to be quite popular.

Bariaur:

Bariaur are tauric inhabitants of the Upper Planes, combining features of humans and rams. These natives of Ysgard are herbivorous and generally peaceful in nature, though like many of Ysgard’s residents they enjoy competition and do not fear any battle. Their herds are a common sight on the chaotic side of the Upper Planes as they travel from plane to plane. Many bariaur make their way to Sigil on their own as traders, explorers, or just to use it a connecting point between journeys.

Modrons:

One of the oddest creatures a planewalker’s likely to ever run into on the planes, the modrons are the workers and caretakers of the plane of Mechanus. They represent the strictest form of law and order, and view the multiverse in an alien manner compared to most other races. Stability, structure, order: these are the modron principles, dictating everything about how they act, think, and function. But even in the perfection of Mechanus things go wrong every now and then. Once in a while a modron loses his place in the hierarchy of the modrons, turns from the order it has always known, and goes rogue.

Resembling a floating, talking skull, a mimir is a magical construct designed to provide information on all aspects of life on the Outer Planes. They jabber all sorts of information when asked, some useful, some not.

I'm still recruiting players, so I'm sorry if this takes longer than usual.

I think I'll go with a start on Golarion - a setting you're all familiar with, and then move on to the planes. It's a bit of traditional start, but well-suited for introducing new players.

Planar Expert/Explorer 2 |HP:16/16 | AC:11, T:11, FF:11 | F:+1, R:+0, W:+3 | CMB: -1, CMD: 9 | Perc: +2 | Speed 20

Really just posting so you get a look at what I have in mind. I'm playing two separate aliases for this character. One as plain old Cedric the other as the eidolon fusion. I really picked this spec because I've wanted to try the archtype and I thought it would fit the adventure. It has huge role play potential, but unfortunately the mechanics open it up for min max abuse. I plan to upgrade the eidolon based on what happens along with the story instead of max dps and I skipped the stat dumping that usually goes along with min maxing the archtype.

How is this for a character? Would be a total laugh in PFS without any offense, but might be good for a non-combat focussed campaign.

I'm tempted to play an idea I've had for a planeswalker based on Magic the Gathering, the character was in the books but never a card, he was a sailor/pirate that was pulled under during a storm and while he was drowning he unlocked his ability to planeswalk and accidentally had his first walk. They don't say much about him other than that, but I think the idea of playing a Magus who is a normal human being but becomes talented with a sword and all of a sudden knows magic, because of his "unlocking".

I figure, Magus Kensai Bladebound (because I've tried to play this class archetype combo twice and both PbPs have failed, haha) who eventually has a sentient sword that speaks to him. This could prove to be fun combined with my idea of playing a true neutral philosopher, someone who always believes in a balance. Occasionally when I make a decision, my bladebound sword could believe in the opposite, and based on our ego battles which are actual in-game rolls, he could actually force me to do the opposite.

I'll have to roll up some stat blocks in a bit. :P But does this sound like the right kind of thing you're looking for? Not to mention, Magi have high int. :D

| AbadarCorp Entertainment Official GM | How is my flying? | DICEBOT LOVES YOU |Starship combat cheat sheet | STEAL THIS TEMPLATE | Traveling until Jan 3, reduced posting frequency expected

Nice concept! I'm just trying to figure out how to fit this in the scenario start. Perhaps your character would have had an initial planes walking experience (question is, where? The astral plane - the great silver void, the 'backstage' of the planes - would deb a candidate, but anything could do).

I'm not to familiar with the MtG Planeswalker storylines or setting, I'm just assuming it is somewhat similar. If not, we'll just jot it down to a misconception your character has regarding the planes ;-).

(You mentioned 'rolling' stats: we're using a 20pt buy, so there's not need to actually roll. At first glance it seems like you got that already)

To Yasmin and Cedric: my apologies if recruitment is progressing slowly. I'm expecting another player to join, so it shouldn't be too long anymore before we have at least a four-player table.

Male Human Magus/2 HP 16/16 | BAB +1 | AC 16 | T 16 | FF 10 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +4 | Will +2 | Perc -1 | Init +4 | Spells: Light, Ray of Frost, Shocking Grasp | Bolts 20/2

Sorry, was using the term "roll" loosely and meant it more along the lines of getting my stat block put together :P I hold no ties to keeping it as an actual "Magic the Gathering" character, just a jumping point for my concept, for all we care he's just a "planeswalking human" who is curious to explore. I put up the stat block to my last attempt at using a kensai magus but I may make him a little less battle oriented and toss a little back into Wisdom, hehe.

Planar Expert/Explorer 2 |HP:16/16 | AC:11, T:11, FF:11 | F:+1, R:+0, W:+3 | CMB: -1, CMD: 9 | Perc: +2 | Speed 20

I like the planes walker idea. Have you thought about maybe discovering the sword during the first planes walk? There are a lot of neat ways you can write that in since they have a habit of magically appearing.

No worries about the wait time. I'm still looking forward to this.

Male Human Magus/2 HP 16/16 | BAB +1 | AC 16 | T 16 | FF 10 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +4 | Will +2 | Perc -1 | Init +4 | Spells: Light, Ray of Frost, Shocking Grasp | Bolts 20/2

The sword could be confined in its own plane for all I know :P Definitely tons of fun ways to incorporate it into my story but since it doesn't come in until level 3 I'll wait and see how everything starts to unravel and I'll definitely give it an interesting appearance.

Female Tian-Min/Kitsune Crossblooded Sorcerer 10

Checking in as player #4. I'm working on my character and story now (not this one, this is one of my PFS characters!). Looks like we've got the arcane side of things quite well covered, so still looking at options, but I'll probably do something divine or a skill-focused bard.

Lily here checking in with my actual character alias. CN Female Tiefling Lotus Geisha Bard; She can pass for human when clothed (she has claws that she paints to just look like long nails, and a tail she keeps hidden in the pleats of her dress... when not using its prehensile nature to unexpectedly swipe stuff), and makes her living as a traveling performer and dancer (and seducer thief), staying in one place only as long she stays out of trouble, or her heritage gets out to someone who wishes to make a big deal of it. At this point, she's pretty much decided that humans suck and she's never going to find someplace to settle down for long, so she's trying to make the most of her traveling lifestyle, trying to experience a bit of everything as she goes, living off tips from her performances and, when those don't make ends meet, the occasional bit of theft.

I'm starting you guys in Varisia, but giving you the freedom to have your own motivation as to why you're there. The place is your traditional 'kick-off inn', so feel free to go the gameplay thread and start introducing your character.

I've put up some map material, just have a look at the Mimir above, he's got a link to multiverse maps. I'm aiming to explain everything as we go along. I don't mind if your character speculates on the workings of the multiverse - at worst they're just wrong ;-)

Could No Levar be from a different plane and has already done his "unlocking" which makes him a planeswalker (magus), but doesn't know exactly how to planeswalk so he's been stuck on this plane for the time being?

I was just going to have him sitting at the bar listening in on the conversation, obviously being a pirate, he's thirsty for treasure even in a strange place.

F Tiefling Bard 1 | HP: 6/9 | AC15, T13, FF12 | F+1, R+5, W+1 | CMB+1, CMD14 | Init+3 | Per-1 | Speed 30 | Bluff+9, Diplo+12, Linguistics+6, Perform (Dance or Sing) +9, Sleight of Hand+7, UMD+9 | Bardic Knowledge +1

So are we starting on the assumption that we've all met and have already agreed to go adventuring? Aria is flexible in this regards - she has no real attachments and travels from place to place for the experience of it, and adventuring is just another new experience to add to the list.

As far as the bardic performance - Aria has spent most of her life performing in little inns to live off of (and despite looking about 20, due to her blood, "most of her life" is most of over 90 years!), so she pretty much immediately goes into perform mode when she steps into a new inn. The story is almost finished, and I will be stabbing a chair "demon" as a finale and joining the party's table soon, once a few more people get the chance to join up :)

| AbadarCorp Entertainment Official GM | How is my flying? | DICEBOT LOVES YOU |Starship combat cheat sheet | STEAL THIS TEMPLATE | Traveling until Jan 3, reduced posting frequency expected

@No Levar: That's sounds good. Depending on how much understanding you want him to have of what happened to him, he can be the character to which these things (i.e. moving to different planes) 'just happen'. I think it will make a nice complement with Cedric, who aims to be the expert.

Feel free to writ your own backstory. If I can make a suggestion, I was thinking along the lines of (1) went out pirating, and got swallowed by a random portal (actually a 'color pool', a defect in the prime material plane) (2) ended up on the astral plane, which was quite a disorienting experience (3) encountered these guys, who taught him how to combine the magical and the martial, (3) stepped into a random color pool and ended up on Golarion.

@Arianna: I've started you in an inn on the outskirts of Varisia. Whether you already know each other, or whether you've agreed to go adventuring together: I've left that intentionally in the middle (though I do have certain expectations, of course).

The silver void
The astral plane 'connects' the prima material plane to the outer planes, the place that most primes insist on calling the 'afterlife'. Although the astral is usually regarded as between in between the outer planes and the prime, some scholars say that a more accurate description is 'behind it'. Or 'beyond it'. Or 'inside it'. They can't ever seem to agree. Perhaps the most accurate description anybody has ever given the astral was by a bard - I've forgotten his name - who called the astral the 'backstage of the planes'. It's what you see when you take a peek behind the curtain. All of a sudden, the stage drops back, and the only thing you see is a timeless, empty space.

The astral is timeless, and some would even say space exists only so long as a body is in there. Should you enter, you'll only be able to move by power of thought. The quicker your wits, the quicker your movement.

It is an endless expanse, difficult to fathom for most, but it is certainly not empty. The powerful wizards of the prime - hah! - use a spell called 'astral projection' to wander on the outer planes. They leave behind silvery cords, strands through the astral. Tiny umbilical cords that connect them back to home.

The githyanki call it their home. They are usually seen as the only true natives of the astral, but even they haven't always been there. They're a deeply mysterious, organised folk, and their long (or has it been long? who can tell without time) exposure to the timeless astral has made them strange. They know the power of the mind, the know the quickness of the body, and they know how to combine the mental and the martial with deadly precision.

The astral is a place that is usually unconnected by portals. The only way to naturally enter the astral is by color pools: strange mirroring ponds of color that connect the astral to the many locations it touches. Conor pools are invisible from the prime, or from the outer plane, but all the more apparent from the astral side. Again, scholars disagree on what they are: flaws in the universe? Actual connections? Hot-spots? Nobody can tell.

1. Gozreh isn’t part of his original world so let’s just ignore that italicized comment at the beginning. 2. I think we’ll make it so he’s a planeswalker, but in order to planeswalk he actually creates these ‘color pools’ which are like small vortexes that suck him through, but he won’t know how to do that for…. as long as the story requires him not to, haha. Sorry it was a lot longer than I thought, I typed it up at work and on a 23” monitor in e-mail format it didn’t seem so…. ramble-filled. I figure he’ll just be sitting around moping, trying to find something to do, when he overhears this conversation and kind of invites himself along?

Kludde,

Do you want me to take the spell focus feat instead of scribe scrolls? Or can I scribe scrolls?

'Map' of the multiverse | More information

Society of Sensation
The Society of Sensation is one of the fifteen factions in Sigil. In short, members have the goal to experience all there is to experience, in order that one might learn more of the multiverse.

Headquartered in the civil festhall in Sigil, the members of the Society of Sensation believe that information given third-, or even second-hand is flawed. Every time a piece of knowledge passes from person to person, something is twisted, distorted, even if unintended. When an event is recorded "objectively", much must be left out; no recounting is truly objective, nor truly comprehensive. It is only by seeing, feeling, experiencing for oneself that one can truly gain understanding. And the more one understands the individual, the more one understands the big picture; the clearer a view one has on the true inner workings of the multiverse.

Artistic expression, however, comes closer than any other means of recording. In producing a piece of art, one is seeking to make a connection with one's audience. To communicate some deep truth, to show the audience some idea or concept in all its aspects. Far more than any attempt at objectivity, art presents to a person a far deeper view of the artist's mental state. And so the Sensates promote the arts as much as possible, providing a stage, a gallery, a platform by which these attempts at communicating the very essence of experience can be granted to the general public. Painting both representational and abstract, theater both narrative and performance, writing both poetic and prose, a well-crafted and well-presented piece of art can be almost as effective as a sensory stone, while reaching an audience far wider than any stone is likely to.

A lot of the holes in his build (saves, low hp) should be compensated for by divine grace and lay on hands, so the old age ability score penalties shouldn't hurt him as much as they might another melee character. I'm considering swapping focused study (for skill focus) for the improved initiative feat, but sense motive seemed the only skill the party didnt have covered. Although looking at Krachxton and Lun Tsu I see that's no longer the case.)

I'm partway through reading the thread, but I'll wait until I'm fully caught up before I join in.

Welcome, Old Bart! Seeing as how it would not be so hard to emerge from a throng of people moving toward a temple, feel free to join in anytime.
