... and this is where the discussion's done.
So I thought we could chat a little bit about the kinds of stuff we are going to do mechanics-wise a bit.
So obviously I'm a dervish dancer bard, which means in combat I'm primarily focused on melee, although I generally start off with a fair amount of buffing (both myself and others). I also have the bodyguard feat, which means that if you're in melee, you'll want to be near me, as I can give you a +7 bonus to AC using one of my AoOs (base 2 + 3 benevolent + 2 gloves of arcane striking, FYI GM).
I've also been thinking about trading in my "mad monkeys" spell for a bardic masterpiece from Blood of Angels called "Symphony of the Elysian Heart". It's an ability that gives all allies within sound of my hurdy gurdy Freedom of Movement for the duration of my performance (except for the underwater combat effect).
Does everyone think this is worth it? Also, GM, it doesn't say in the ability that I need to actually be playing my hurdy gurdy to bring about this effect. The ability states that Perform (keyboard) is a prereq, but neither the description of the masterpiece in Blood of Angels nor the description of masterpieces in general in Ultimate Magic state that the instrument is required. On the other hand, I could very easily see that it's only logical that the instrument is required. Wanted to double check that with you first.

Also, GM, need a clarification on how you want to handle my Bodyguard feat (i.e. do I need to be adjacent to the person I'm defending AND threatening the attacker, or just adjacent to the person I'm defending). This topic has not been FAQ'd as far as I know, and has been discussed many, many, many times on these boards. For more background, just do a search on "Bodyguard Feat".
DM Amazing Red |
Well if none of the masterpieces require the instrument then I don't see why this one would(Though that may be an oversight). As long as you meet the prereqs and you spend the rounds of bardic performance go for it.
For bodyguard you need to be threatening the attacker and adjacent to the person you're defending. Since you have 6 AOOs, I will assume you're bodyguarding every applicable attack so we don't need to retcon as much.

Here's another question. I have 13 K in cash on hand. I was saving up to upgrade by Belt of Physical Might, but could be convinced to buy something else. If folks don't mind, could you take a look at my equipment and see if I'm missing anything desperately?
Shinkeer Aswander |
Hey Alex! How ya doing? Coming to GenCon this year? I can't remember if you were or not.
Pallas Morningstar |
Probably not this year. It's pretty expensive to fly out from the West Coast. Now if I could only get someone to pay me to attend GenCon ...
Brom'mash of Taldor |
Aside from Shinkeer’s spells, we’re lacking decent ranged firepower right now. I’d suggest Pallas pick up a bow and upgrade it a couple times. With haste, arcane strike, and inspire courage running, he’d make a pretty good archer if we come up against a flying threat.

Believe me, I understand. My wife and I lived in Seattle for three years and would fly back home to Indy at least three times a year. Expensive! If you happen to make it, let me know, I'll probably be doing shuttle service again this year.

Hmm, a +1 seeking composite shortbow or just a +2 composite shortbow?
Pallas Morningstar |
OK, I've upgraded my mw comp shortbow (+1 Str) to a +2 comp shortbow (+1 Str), bought adamantine weapon blanch (and coated 10 arrows with it), and a scroll of versatile weapon. Should I also buy an efficient quiver and get the max number of arrows? Should a buy a wand to of something missile-related to augment this?
Pallas Morningstar |
OK, I've also sacrificed a third level spell (mad monkeys) to get Symphony of the Elysian Heart. Voila! Freedom of Movement on demand!
Pallas Morningstar |
So what do you want on Pallas' tombstone? :)
Huh?
Dora D Asplora |
Interesting...3 bards? How well do inspire courage type effects work together for the variant bards?
Dora is usually more focused on buffs and support than melee, but can provide some tactical support with wolf or griffon depending on space. Not sure how much overlap we will have.
Davoliznakamushka |
We have zero overlap. My bard provides insight bonuses, and the dawnflower dervish only provides bonuses to themselves.
Spell overlap might be an issue though. That we should coordinate.
Here's what I have:
4th (3/day) - Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility, Hold Monster (DC 21)
3rd (5/day) - Crushing Despair (DC 20), Cure Serious Wounds, Dispel Magic, Displacement, Haste, See Invisible
2nd (5/day) - Discovery Torch, Calm Emotions (DC 19), Glitterdust (DC 17), Heroism, Silence (DC 17)
1st (7/day) - Feather Fall, Hideous Laughter (DC 18), Liberating Command (+20), Saving Finale, Share Language, Vanish
0th (at-will) - Dancing Light, Detect Magic, Message, Prestidigitation, Read Magic, Resistance
Dora D Asplora |
Good that there is no overlap for inspire. Haste seems the main overlap, but that is not a problem in my book. :-)
Bard Spells Known (CL 7th; concentration +12):
3rd (2/day)—confusion (DC 18), haste
2nd (4/day)—glitterdust (DC 17), invisibility, rage, tongues
1st (6/day)—expeditious retreat, feather fall (DC 16), grease (DC 16), saving finale (DC 16), timely inspiration (DC 16)
0 (at will)—daze (DC 15), detect magic, light, prestidigitation (DC 15), read magic, spark (DC 15)
Oracle Spells Known (CL 1st; concentration +6):
1st (5/day)—cure light wounds, divine favor, xprotection from evil
0 (at will)—create water, ghost sound (DC 15), guidance, mage hand, mending, stabilize
Davoliznakamushka |
Well, I can Dirge of Doom on the lead off as a move and follow it up with crushing despair as a debuff, and you could throw a confusion. Might not be a bad combo; I can potentially put a -4 on saves.
Or we can both just sing, and give +4 to hit, +1 to damage, +3 AC, and +3 on Ex, Spell-Like, Supernatural saves ;)
Not that the AC is going to help the barbarian very much!
Pallas Morningstar |
We will finally answer the age-old question: Can you have too many bards?

Pallas Morningstar |
Here's my spell contribution. Lots of overlap.
4th (3/day)—dimension door, echolocation, freedom of movement
3rd (5/day)—cure serious wounds, dispel magic, good hope, haste, slow (DC 17)
2nd (5/day)—bladed dash, cure moderate wounds, gallant inspiration (DC 16), glitterdust (DC 16), mirror image, silence (DC 16)
1st (6/day)—cure light wounds, feather fall (DC 15), feather step (DC 15), grease (DC 15), liberating command, remove fear, timely inspiration (DC 15), vanish
Shinkeer Aswander |
Just to keep from being left out, Shin has spells!
2nd (5/day)—acid arrow
1st (8/day)—vanish, shocking grasp, magic missile, grease (DC 20), bless, snowball (DC 20)
0 (at will)—disrupt undead, haunted fey aspect, resistance, detect magic, flare (DC 18), daze (DC 18), message
Pallas Morningstar |
Spells for everyone!
Do we have a timetable for when this game will be getting started?
Pallas Morningstar |
Is it April 5th yet? Is it? Is it?
Also wanted to let the GM know that when I use the Bodyguard feat, I give anyone next to me a +8 bonus to AC (2 + 3 benevolent armor + 3 gloves of arcane striking). The gloves also do 3 points of magical piercing/slashing damage to any opponent adjacent to my target.
Dora D Asplora |
What? Shin did not pick up a level of bard in the process? Well, I do not know if he can travel with our merry band. :-P
Pallas Morningstar |
Just out of curiosity, Shin. How did you manage to get your Wis up to 26? I have a Pal/Monk and have not been able to get his stats up nearly that high. There were just too many other stats I had to put points into to make the build viable.
Shinkeer Aswander |
I thought that question might get asked....
Shin was originally Lantern Lodge, so he played in the retirement scenario, and he also played in a Season Four that grants him a boost for a year. Not sure if everyone has played, so don't want to spoil. Plus he has a +4 headband. And I dumped both level 4 and 8 stat boosts on it.
Shinkeer Aswander |
Heh, I just spent the last half an hour checking my stats amd kept thinking I was 2 pts too high. Until I realized I was forgetting my +2 for racial.....
Pallas Morningstar |
That's the first time I've ever used Diplomacy during an intro :) Felt good!
