Here's my idea for marching order. Basically I want Shinkeer up front because of his perception check and his good AC. Also want Dora near the front so she can charge, and Brom in the back to keep us safe from rear-guard actions. Any comments?
5' corridor:
Shinkeer
Dora
Pallas
Davo
Brom
10' corridor:
Shinkeer Dora
Pallas Davo
Brom
15'+ corridor:
Shinkeer Pallas Dora
Davo Brom

Also, do we know (or could we find out) if we'll be traveling above 15,000 feet during our journey?

Dora is not a charger build, so if she is blocking others, she is fine in the middle or the back.

I'd rather have the guy with Improved Uncanny Dodge at the back if he can't be at the front, but I take your point.
This brings up an interesting question. What will folks likely be doing in combat? Since our abilities overlap somewhat, it might be useful for us to figure out what we tend to do in combat situations before we actually get into one.

Yea, it's not above 15000 feet.
Good. Even if we're only between 5,000 and 15,000 feet, we still have to deal with escalating Fort saves every hour or be fatigued, and that includes our mounts. Is it worth it to spend a month at that altitude to get acclimated? Magic to get around this problem is sadly very expensive, especially if we have to supply it for all of our mounts.

The other option is that we scry on the giant and then pay someone to teleport us there. We don't have any of the giant's belongings, do we? I'm assuming the book does not belong to him?
Pallas Morningstar

No, you do not have any of his things. Also, it is not above 5000 feet so don't worry about the enviromentals.
OK, well that makes it a whole lot less difficult!
EDIT: Also, should we pool our money and invest in a teleport scroll? Might be a good backup.

Sorry, have bit of a bug and haven't really been able to get off the couch.
Shin has about 2,800 in coin if something like that was wanted.
As far as combat, Shin mixes up melee and spells depending on the situation. He neither a blaster nor a big hitter.

I tend to spend the first round or two buffing myself or others and then wade in melee, all the way trying to stay next to at least one other person so that I can use my bodyguard ability.

I'm surprised Brom'mash isn't part of the Ulfen guard.
As to combat, song + ally buff the first round, followed by some sort of monster debuff (crushing despair, hold monster, calm emotions, hideous laughter) - assuming they have a mind. I do have a lesser threnodic rod for undead. I'm happy to dimension door fighter types into full attack range, but given the mobility of the fighter types in this group not sure it's necessary.
Dora D Asplora

Dora also usually leads with song + party buff (haste, tactics etc).
She and Rusty can attack as well, but not big hitters. For flying creatures she has a bow (mainly vs outsiders) or she can pull a griffon out of her sleeve.

Rusty is really Boots 2.0 (he went to large size at 7th level advancement, so I figured even Boots could not eat that much). I was going to name him Clifford, but figured that would be a pushing it.

Pallas will buy some trail rations and snowshoes, but it otherwise ready to go.

Does anyone besides Shin have an opinion about buying that scroll of teleport for the group? It's 1125 gp total, or 225 gp a piece. Might be nice to have in a pinch.

Also, Red, I know you have given me your ruling on this, but I thought I'd argue my case a bit more on the Bodyguard feat by proxy, in case you are open to being convinced. :)

Personally, I would not allow it against ranged attacks, only melee attacks. Believe me, I understand both sides of the issue and am happy to abide by the "must be adjacent to defendee and able to attack person attacking him/her" ruling.

And the AC quickly becomes better than modest with a little investment. He also doesn't mention any limitations on what ranged attacks you can bodyguard so with his wording, you could bodyguard the boulders that may or may not be thrown at you in the near future. Which is silly. Though in our homegame to save time, we just said it auto-worked no rolling required.

Davo, I'm a little unsure about the naturalist ability. Does it provide those bonuses against one type of creature or against all types of creatures we are facing?
Pallas Morningstar
|
OK, thanks.
The stacking of modifiers in this party is kinda crazy, but that's not surprising that four of five PCs are bards!
Pallas Morningstar
|
Brom didn't even invoke his bardness there.
Well, in his defense, Brom didn't even minor in bard, he just took a class on it freshman year.

I know that we can't "activate" the book, but has anyone actually tried reading it?
Pallas Morningstar

So are we spending the night here or not?
Pallas Morningstar

OK, sounds good. Let's leave then. Any last suggestions from the giant about the giants?
Dora D Asplora

Dora climbs atop Rusty. And nods with a bow to their host.
"Thank you for the information. And the potions. We shall return...and with good news, I am sure. . "

Sorry, I've been very busy with work this last week or so, but I'm back now! Should have let you guys know ...
