Of Kings and Commoners - Kingmaker AP

Game Master RPGGGM

With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

Zokon's blade slashes out at the zombie, but by sheer luck the flailing monster avoids the blow.

The thing's thrashing finally extinguishes the fire fire on its back. 1 more point of fire damage dealt.

The tiny nasty creature blowing razor-sharp kisses was nowhere to be seen, but one zombie remained. She moves up to it, then stabs at it, this time holding her breath from the start.

My main goal is to put light on the area so people can walk around. But I might as well try to light up the baddie:

Ranged Touch (-2 shaken): 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 2 = 18
Might be a cover penalty for -4 there also.

Honestly, I had assumed Dancing Lights was a cantrip. I didn't think of it being the racial ability. Otherwise I would gladly have cast light on some pebble for someone to have a secondary light source and/or be able to throw it at something to make it more visible. With 20 minutes of light, it's quite reasonable to cast it once when coming down into the dark and hand it off to whoever brings up the rear. I only did not do so because I assumed more people to have magical light available(or even mundane light like a torch). We took care of the zombies so no use retconning, but next time, remind me if I forget.

There's not really enough light from what is at essentially a crude compact mirror to illuminate much more than a candle's worth and there aren't many things in the way to outline with the light--just more dark.

The cell door is locked. The keyhole is on the other side, part of a metal box that is worked into the door bars (like an old timey Western jail cell). It would be awkward to pick, but you could reach it.

Numalar shines a tiny bit of reflected light on the shooter at the mouth of the passage beyond the strange and terrible chapel room.

We actually had this conversation a long time ago. I believe that's why Alia started memorizing light in the first place. I don't think Posh had light on his list at that point.

Now that there is light to see by, Numalar spurs Sir Didymus on to the south. They stop in the doorway to the chamber.

Wait... there was a pit in here somewhere.

"The fellow with the crossbow has gone down to the west again! If you're coming this way, don't forget the pit!"

Numalar readies a spell in case the fellow appears.

Will ready an action to cast acid splash at anything that appears in the south entrance of the room (aside from friends). I will fight defensively when I make the attack. I will use the acid flask as a focus again.

Readied action:
Acid Splash range touch (-4 fighting defensively): 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 4 = 181d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

AC will be 16.

We did have a short talk on it, a long time ago, yes. I had assumed steps were taken to remedy the situation after level-up, but it seems only Posh did. No worries, but you were free to ask for light after the oozes, before we moved forward. If I forget about it, feel free to request it. It's a cantrip, so no use "holding back".

Zokon moves up behind Posh covering the way ahead with his bow

"I am behind you with my bow guys, lets see if we can't return the favour and beware of traps he may be luring us into"

At that Zokon has a look around for anything suspicious

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Zokon falls in to cover the group's point-man, Numalar, with his bow.

Alia comes to stand beside Scarlet, ready to spellsling should she need to.

Pushing ahead.

Poshbot heroically stands his ground.

Everything is quiet... Too quiet.

"Man, this is tiring..." As a side note, I'm pretty sure I'll need at least an 18 roll to bust this thing down, assuming I do it during my Bloodrage.

Well, with your assistance, we're at 20...maybe it's old and rusty enough that it's sufficient ;) I'm just afraid the little guy has a key and would lead us on a merry chase through the "locked" corridors if we simply chase him.

Sorry I couldn't think of anything to do...hmm...I have an idea now.

Posh looks towards Numalar and attempts to get his attention.
"Numalar, shall I assist like with the Bear? If Alia and Scarlet scare him this way?" he asks, attempting to send a message

Bluff: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

Numalar:
Posh is suggesting to put a greased area at the entrance so the figure may slip to make it easy to catch him.

Posh gets his point across.

Alia and Scarlet continue to struggle with the cell door.

Pretty close.

But to little effect. The thing was built tough.

There's several doors...alas, with Zokon burning another Sunrod: Could we simple get rid of the light circles and assume everybody sees at least 60 feet? Numalar and Scarlet have 60 feet darkvision. Zokon and me have a Sunrod out for 30 feet normal + 30 feet dim(doubled for Alia), Posh has light and I can cast light for Celyne, for torchy goodness of 20 feet normal+20 feet dim(doubled for both via low-light vision).

So effectively we would have Scarlet and Numalar at 60 feet(black-white) regardless of light level. Zokon at 30 feet normal/60 feet dim. Celyne and Posh at 40 feet normal/80 feet dim, and Alia at 60 feet normal/120 feet dim...and that's not even taking into account that other people will provide light sources beyond what people carry themselves - with the many twists and turns in this place, it may be easier to just get rid of the light layers.

"I don't think so, Posh. It would keep us from advancing. Wait until you see him."

Numalar nods to Zokon as Zokon takes a position in front of him.

"Zokon, let's leapfrog. I'll move ahead while you cover me, then then you move ahead of me. We should leave a gap of at least 10 feet between us, in case the lead man needs to step back."

Numalar slowly rides ahead on Sir Didymus until he is a little ways down the hall. He presents his symbol again.

Again readying an action to cast burning hands if the bad guy appears ahead of me - from here I can get everything up to the door. Just use the roll from before. I will drop he readied action if Zokon is in the AoE.

"He went down this way. Zokon... want to take the door?"
