Is this beach sandy enough to be difficult terrain, like the first beach? We're moving like it's not.

EDIT: Wait, was the first beach difficult terrain? Now I can't find a reference that it was. I thought we were moving half-speed on that map....?

Joana wrote:

It's not difficult terrain. It probably should be, but I didn't think of it myself, so I'll rule that the sand is wet and packed enough to provide adequate support. :)

That's okay. I push the game forward after waiting awhile, but I don't hold it against you. I know that real life can rear its ugly head quite frequently.

And I'm sorry to hear about your sick family member and pet. I hope they both get better soon. I'm on edge myself at the moment about one of my dogs. He has a limp that just won't go away. He's been on an anti-inflammatory for some time now that has only had moderate success. His x-rays came up inconclusive and will now have to be sent to a specialist. The last time I had a dog with a limp that wouldn't go away, it turned out to be cancer. This dog is very young for it to be cancer (he's only 5), but the vet has admitted that if it weren't for his age, at this point, she would be expecting a tumor.

I sincerely hope you're not dealing with anything near as serious. Take care.

O ye of little faith! (Mahjik twice and Jask's Fort save)

It's not Douena's fault Lorenz is a big black hole of anti-luck.

As the saying goes, "If it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all".

And Navior, no, I don't think it's that serious. Our dog is diabetic, which is indeed serious (if not cancer serious), and she's been acting a little weak and trembly is all. We're pretty sure it's just a bad batch of insulin or some other insulin reaction, since she started acting like this just after we started a new bottle. She goes to see the vet tomorrow, so we'll see.

Well, I did say that there must have been a moment. I also figured as soon as I mentioned it, you'd find an example or two and save me the trouble. :)

These crabs are the toughest monsters you've encountered thus far. Should be worth some nice XP though. :)

As long as they aren't relatives of That Damned Crab, we're cool :p

Ah, I remember that one! Well, I will point out that that article was written by James Jacobs who also wrote this adventure that you're on. Just sayin'... ;)

Heh. Fortunately, I know that one, That Damned Crab was reprinted in Stormwrack with considerable nerfs, and two, James Jacobs is quite familiar by now with how overpowered TDC is for the CR (I recall reading a thread here where someone asked him about it) ;)

Yeah, you really don't have to worry. These crabs are just stock giant crabs from the Bestiary. (The adventure only actually has one at this location, but I threw in a second one since this is a larger group than the adventure is designed for.)

So true. And to think that I thought the bad luck thing was just going to be a little bit of amusing flavor for the character!

Nice to know who my friends are! :)

You can always count on your friends to point out your flaws.

Man, I wish Aakif would share the crit love with my other characters. He's the only one the dice rollers seem to like.

Navior, did you miss Mahjik's post? It looks like you got everyone else's.

Mahjik the Flink wrote:

I assume that the beach is considered normal terrain (otherwise it would be lol that the path a little to the side is normal terrain, but the place where they build the camp is not).

Mahjik double-moves to AZ-2, and goes quiet and stealthy Stealth 1d20 + 4

Mahjik rushes towards the nearest hut, his footfalls growing more quiet once he is out of line of sight of the vined lady. He stops next to the hut motioning quietly for Douena to come to him.

Yikes! Yes, I did miss it. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll update right away.

Navior wrote:
The distant song of the spheres can just be heard and Makoa and Sasha are healed (and Mahjik, too, but I don't think he's hurt). Unfortunately, the vine lady is also healed of the damage done by Aakif's arrow.

Sorry, Aakif! I thought it might be some kind of weird undead from the description. Now we know, I guess....

Shadow Lodge

Navior:
I've notice Makoa gets hit a lot lately(most recently for max damage...), and since we still have some sort of big snake thing, I have begun to ponder his mortality, and whether or not I'd be able to continue playing. So far though, it seems every humanoid on the island is out to get us! So my choices, if I still can play after death are(subject to your approval): Ghost, Cannibalistic pygmy, or.. something really weird.

I love the way Makoa is turning out, and I loath to see any of my characters die(except in really cool ways, like in the "Happy Deaths!" thread), but I like having a contingency plan just in case. Thoughts?

Everyone else: Why is a Tangela attacking me?!

Dragonborn3:
I wouldn't worry too much about Makoa dying. The group has been handling things pretty well on the whole. The crabs were tough, but they were meant to be tough. The group has had the bad luck to encounter nothing but hostile creatures so far. I should point out the the only humanoids you've encountered so far have been undead ones and this latest vine lady. Beyond those, it's been mostly dimorphodons, which are only hostile if you bother them or approach their nest. Nothing you've encountered so far has had an Intelligence greater than 2.

All that said, death is always a risk and I'm open to options about what to do if a character dies. A replacement character can easily be added as a survivor of another shipwreck. That's the most obvious route, but certainly not the only. There are creatures with higher Intelligence on the island, so a replacement character could come from amongst them.

I'm hesitant to have a character come back as a ghost or other form of undead as a way of permanently continuing a character (although it could make an interesting temporary story), simply because there's a story point behind the undead and this island and when the characters uncover it, they might end up wiping out the undead PC. Of course, it could create an interesting moral dilemma. But I don't want to give too much away in that regard.

The short of it is, if Makoa or anybody else dies, I'm not going to be kicking them out of the group. There are many options we can pursue at that time.

Shadow Lodge

Navior:
I'm not seeing a no on the pygmy option...

I'm glad to hear no one's getting kicked out because they died. I shall strive to survive! Of course, I'm almost afraid of what Douena my come back as.. 0-o

What about this? I have the book.. and I think Douena would get a kick out of an animal joining the group. I'll buy you the pdf if you would like to have it in front of you.

To summarize: there wasn't a no on the pygmy, there is something about the undead on this island, and no one's getting kicked out. So good news all around!

Dragonborn3:
I definitely did not say no to the pygmy option. Indeed, I would be very open to the idea.

As for an animal joining the group, I am also very intrigued by the idea. And I certainly wouldn't say no to an offer to buy me the pdf of the book! :)

Of course, this is all still very premature as Makoa is still very much alive. :)

Shadow Lodge

Navior:
That's why it's called a 'back-up plan' and not a 'give me an hour to make a new character'! ;)

You'll have to wait a bit before you get the pdf though, so until then.. I shall imagine someone shorter than Douena joinging the party! ;)

That sounds pretty appropriate. The most talkative NPC with the quietest one. Hopefully Gelik will still be alive in the morning.

Just realized we didn't ever actually say we buried/burned/whatever the vine-covered woman. I hope we took care of that and didn't just leave her lying on the sand for the predators. Douena and Mahjik wouldn't have liked that.

I was assuming that she was buried under some rocks. The muscle-bound could have easily done that without taking much time.

Heh, I forgot about that, too. There was loads of time for you to have done something, so I have no problem with retroactively stating that you buried or burned her, whichever the party prefers.

In the Unimportant Minutiae category, Douena used her Arcane Mark ability to put her name on her new necklace before dark last night. That is all.

In the Important category, I would like to declare that I really enjoy Navior's style and approach to GMing. Please put forth a loud notification whenever you start-up a new pbp campaign - I will definitely want to jump on that bandwagon. (I'm guessing that will only happen around March or so, when the new horror-APG starts.)

I will definitely do so. I think we've got a great group of players here as well, and I would happily have any of you in any future games I run.

That said, it will likely be a while before I start another pbp. I've got two at the moment and I want to be make sure I can still give full effort to both of them (not to mention my two tabletop games as well). So I won't likely start a new game until one of my current ones comes to an end. This group should be well past the first Serpent's Skull adventure of this path by the time Carrion Crown starts coming out, but we won't be through all six (I suspect we'll be part way through the second).

Of course, if the situation changes and I find myself with more time, I'll gladly start something new and let everyone know!

In the meantime, the good news is this game's got lots left to it, so you get to keep playing in this one!

An amusing arcane mark story:

In one of my tabletop games, one of the players was playing a gnome necromancer who loved to mark just about everything she came across with arcane mark. The party was based out of an old house, so she put literally hundreds of marks all over the house with the intention of driving anyone casting detect magic utterly mad. Alas, the character died, but the player made a point of having her new character (an oracle) find a reason to cast detect magic while she was in the house shortly after joining the group.

I've been wondering if there's any actual use to arcane mark for a character who's never going to be able to cast instant summons. I guess making her most treasured items look like they're more valuable than they actually are to a detect magic spell will have to suffice.

Quote:

Mahjik nods sagely as the discussion goes thoroughly above his head, but apparently he does pick up on some division among the castaways; his response to this is: "Wise man knows that the four elements, like man alone, are weak; but together they form a stronger fifth element: boron." Then he seems to drift off in a spell again, half dozing half completely asleep.

Anybody watch the movie? (Dorkness Rising)

Mahjik the Flink wrote:

Apparently, I'm one of the few gamers that movie didn't appeal to. I never got past the fact that the book the newbie chick was making her character out of was clearly the Player's Handbook (lingering full-cover shot) and yet none of the feats/abilities that she showed up the grizzled veterans with actually exist in that book. Bugged me the rest of the movie.

Except for "Improved Initiative"? :) ...I'm sure the context was that she used other sources too for her character.

Some quotes still greet me at all our live-sessions, like the epochal "usually we let the dice decide".

Navior, do you know how many XPs we should have? I can't remember if I added that last 50 XPs to Douena's character sheet or not. Maybe you could keep a running total over at the Google site?

I'm pretty sure Mahjik is properly uptodate XP-wise, that would be 1948xp

And I'm pretty sure that Makao's acrobatic stunts will be enough to carry us to 2000+ ;D

...does anybody else note that the xp is only marginally above the post count? Like 33% more or so?

LoreKeeper wrote:

So what you're saying is that if Aakif were more loquacious, we'd already be level 2? :p

1948 is the correct total.

Is this the point where I threaten to give exactly 51 XP as today's total? ;)

Ha!

Seriously, you'll get more than that today. However, if there is ever a situation where you really end up just 1 or 2 XP from what you need, I'll tell you to just level up anyway. I'm not that cruel.

I'm more worried about how cruel you are. :P

Okay guys! Just a nice quiet walk back to camp. No sudden movements people. Don't startle the GM with unexpected roleplaying...

Exactly! Keep up the chatter out there, fellows! Plus, we're only 17 posts from catching up with AK's notoriously-prolific Serpent's Skull thread. :)

Mahjik the Flink wrote:
Mahjik looks surprisingly fresh in spite of his illness and all the travails of the day. (way to go GM rolls!)

Those dice can be really friendly sometimes. They've been particularly friendly with the random encounters. Only one so far! Statistically, one would expect to have had about 3 random encounters so far. But then, the fates could well change at any moment. :)

It has just occurred to me that I haven't drawn attention to the way I do group rolls. You may have noticed that I always do the rolls in the same order: PCs in alphabetical order first, then party animals (in this case, only Soulwind), then NPC allies in alphabetical order, and finally monsters/villains in alphabetical order. This is just to give you added insurance that I don't preview rolls first and then arrange the order to fit patterns that I might prefer.
