Nebbin looks up, to see if the storm clouds are looming.

"Does it look like it's about to rain to you?" he asks Kayleigh and Tassira.

Regardless, he stands a little bit taller, trying to make sure the toughs don't think there's reason to come back.

Kayleigh doesn't respond to the men leaving the building. When Nebbin asks about the weather, Kayleigh elbows him gently in the gut and says, "I believe he was speaking metaphorically. Likely meaning that he thinks the Guard's presence here means trouble's about to break out. So less eyes in the clouds, more on the building!"

The young priestess doesn't do a very good job of following her own directions, though, seeming a bit distracted for some reason.

Regeris pauses by the door, his mind racing as he decides he needs to fit in very quickly.

Linking arms with Emi, he approaches the bar, waiting for the bartender to notice him. As he does so, he tries to listen in on the chatter, and perhaps the sound of the folks who escaped.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Regeris is trying to recall names of large theatre groups, ideally something big enough he could claim association to without drawing too much attention.

Bridgefront - Perrin's Perch
--------------------------------------------------

Regeris racks his brain for something that sounds good. The bartender buys him some time by paying more attention to the performance than to his job.

Down on the south side of the Heights are the Marbledome and Kendall's Amphitheatre. The first is the premier opera house in the city, the latter an acting house. The amphitheatre is built into a sinkhole with the stage suspended over the pit - one of the city's more unforgettable locales. It's been years since Regeris has been to either place, but he's sure they're still a thing.

The folks that left walked past the bar and through a door. They turned an immediate right and then through a door that leads to the steps (let's call it the Shingles exit).

Just as Regeris gets the bartender's attention, it's snatched away again. An entourage of roughnecks, at least half of the guards from downstairs, come up the stairs behind Emi and Regeris. As they file past Emi on their way to the shingles exit, she can't help but recognize the man in the center of the group - Pilts Swastel. He waves greeting to the man behind the bar as he passes, then follows his men to the flat roof of the building next door.

If he recognizes Emi, he shows no sign of it.

As soon as Pilts and his men have passed by, Emi nudges Regeris and gives a quick head tilt in their direction.

"Swastel Pilts, a local crime boss. No time to explain but there's lots of bad feelings between him and us, Kayleigh especially. He didn't recognize me, but I doubt he's forgotten Kayleigh so easily. She'd probably give herself away as soon as she saw him anyway. We don't want them meeting here. It would wreck everything. He's for another time."

Emi holds up the bottle in her hand up so it's obvious for those close by, and says loudly. "C'mon, let's not wait for more drinks. We still have this. Let's go."

She drags Regeris by their linked arms toward the Shingles Exit.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

As the two make their way to the exit, a teenager comes loping up the steps behind the bar (the same steps used by Emi, Regeris and the Pilts entourage).

"There's guardsmen outside the front door of the Perch!" he rasps, trying to catch his breath. "Boss is thinking they may mean to come in!"

The news prompts half-a-dozen people around the room to gain their feet and settle their tabs quickly. A table with three people seated there catches Regeris's attention. One woman catches the hand of another over the table, pleading with her somehow. The third person, a dark-haired man of middling age sits there, watching the two but not saying anything. The other woman pulls her hand away and stands up quickly to leave.

"I'll come back soon," you overhear. She dashes for the doors to the balcony that overlook the building next door (next to the Shingles exit), obviously not interested in meeting the guardsmen outside.

It takes all of Regeris' effort for him not to smack his forehead with his palm loudly and openly. He instead keeps his usual composed expression and whispers back fiercely.

"Fine, he's not our problem. That woman has my attention, she's worried. One of us should put a tail on her and the other should get our companions the hell out of here before this blows up."

Regeris pushes out into the Shingles exit with Emi and sees if he can give an easy chase to the woman.

Regeris doens't have a climb skill so this may be a better job for Emi, but he'll give (stealthy) chase otherwise.

So, if someone chases the woman (assuming she's running) would the chase rules be in use? If I remember correctly those don't factor armor in? It's going to be a critical point in whether or not Emi should try since she's in medium armor.

Male NG Human Inquisitor 6 | HP: 33/33| AC: 17 (13 Tch, 14 Fl) | CMB: +7 CMD: 19 | F: +6, R: +6, W: +10 | Init: +6 | Perc: +12, SM: +14 | Speed 30ft | Spells: 5/5 4/4 | Judgements 2/2 | Teamwork 3/3 | Bane 5/5 | Discern Lies 5/5 | Harrow Points: 4/4 | Active conditions: None

I was thinking using stealth and tailing her rather than a chase. If Emi is in armour Regeris is probably more mobile.

Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

You can try to grab her right here in the bar, which I'd resolve as an initiative followed by a potential grapple check. Failing that attempt or not trying it, any attempt to tail her is going to involve a chase. I laid out the basic rules in this post, and if you filter out some specifics in that post about that particular chase, most of it still applies. That includes the height of the fall changing at certain points of the chase. This one starts on the third floor, and as the assassin in that last chase demonstrated, the penalty for big mistakes can be fatal.

It comes down to a sequence of skill challenge options. But I don't recall anything saying that armor check penalties didn't apply to those checks. It definitely wouldn't be my first missed ruling, though, so if you can point me to that text, I'm willing to consider.

Either way, tackling her or chasing her requires an initiative. If either of you are taking those actions, go ahead and roll initiative.

Female Human Slayer (Vanguard) 8 | HP: 34/83 | AC: 23 (T: 13, F: 20) | CMB: +12, CMD: 24 | F: +9, R: +8, W: +5 | Init: +6 | Perc: +11, SM: +10 | Speed 20'

I'd expect ACP to apply, the thing I was wondering about was speed. Emi is down to 20' with the medium armor. But really even without speed immediately discounting her, I think Regeris is better set up all around to do it if there's a chase, even without climb. I looked into getting the armor off and that would take 5 rounds with assistance, which is just too long.

I'd prefer she be tailed rather than chased, but it looks like they're the same really. What do you think Regeris? Try something here? Seems awfully risky with so many guard types around.

Emi takes a hard look at the woman Regeris refers to, checking to see if she matches the description they have of Trinia. Just in case...

Ugh.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Yep rdknight, from that perspective you're right. You get a bonus to your checks if you have greater than 30' speed, but don't get penalized for 20'. You get to advance the same number of stages as everyone else if you attempt the challenges.

Regeris will tail her from a distance being all stealthy like. He's not going to accost random people because they're suspicious, he just thinks she knows something.

Emi nods when Regeris makes his decision. "I'll go tell the others. It's a very slim chance, but I'll have them go back to her stepmother's flat, just in case she's going there. I'll stay here in case she circles back."

Emi quickly moves back inside. She looks to see if the couple who were sitting at the table with the possible Trinia are still there.

Nebbin continues to wait outside, pleased that their cloaks are obviously impressing all the local people and helping them realize the Guard is still here to protect them.

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

The woman vaults the balcony rail and disappears over the edge. As she does, the breeze takes her hood revealing a crop of short blonde hair. She does indeed match the description of your quarry.

The table where the woman was sitting with two others is vacant. Some folks are taking the shingles exit, which leads to the same adjacent rooftop that the suspect just vaulted down to. Others head down the steps with the boy who just tipped the place off to the guards outside. A few still sit at the bar with their ale - innocent or too drunk to care.

Going out to the balcony reveals a little bit more about the name of this place. The balcony is filled with seats arranged to look down onto the flat, second-story roof of the adjacent building. Beyond the stage-roof building, its two abutting neighbors offer similar views onto the stage - 'The World's Stage', as the sign reads on the rail of the balcony. One of the opposite buildings is three-stories like this one, and the facing third floor windows offer views of the stage. The other (left-most) of the abutting buildings is two-stories, like the stage. But its peaked roof offers 'stadium' seating to look down on the stage from the opposite side.

When Regeris gets to the rail, there are several people crossing the stage in various directions. Most are coming from the shingles exit. Several are going to a stairwell house on the corner of the stage - down into the building below. Some others are crossing the stage headed for the other adjacent buildings. There's no sign of the blonde mop.

It's a DC 15 Acrobatics(jump) to get down to the stage the way the suspect went. Or you can go around by the shingles exit. Either way you'll need to make a guess which way to follow.

As Emi probably suspected, she finds no mustering guard presence outside the tavern other than her friends.

Female Human Slayer (Vanguard) 8 | HP: 34/83 | AC: 23 (T: 13, F: 20) | CMB: +12, CMD: 24 | F: +9, R: +8, W: +5 | Init: +6 | Perc: +11, SM: +10 | Speed 20'

Emi joins the flow of people down the stairs and out the door. She's disappointed they hadn't had just a few more minutes before the exodus.

Rather than walking directly toward the others, she tacks to the side a little. Also, I rather liked the place. I hope this doesn't mean I can't ever come back.

When she's near enough for them to easily see it, she makes a sight gesture with her hand for the others to follow her and keeps walking on by. She leads them around a corner, out of the bar's line of sight.

Once Nebbin, Kayleigh, and Tassira have caught up, Emi fills them in.

"No point in going in. They had a spotter who saw you. Everyone who wasn't interested in meeting a guard patrol made off. As you can see, that was just about everyone."

"There was a woman who may have been Trinia. She left across the rooftops. Regeris is following her. Hopefully he'll be able to see where she lands next. I told Regeris you three would go back to Trinia's stepmother's flat in case she's on her way there."

"I'm going to wait a little while for things to settle and go back inside here. She was with friends and may try to link up with them again. If I don't see the friends back inside within a couple of hours I'll come meet you."

Emi turns back toward the bar, adding "And for the sake of all the gods, take those cloaks off. You may as well be wearing cowbells around your necks. I don't know how to make you understand what a problem they are when doing this sort of thing. But I'll add, a few weeks ago if you were wearing them around you would never even have seen me to start with. Nobody's impressed and they're probably costing you potential friends."

As much as Tassira's willing to listen to the information Emileva has to share, her eyes harden when the swordswoman tells them to ditch the cloaks.

"No."

She lets the word hang in the air. "And, frankly, if the Guard are to be seen as respectable again, I'm not going to do so. I'm heading back to the flat--and once this affair's wrapped up, I'm going to get that girl out of the Queen's custody."

She turns on her heel. "Kayleigh, Nebbin, would you kindly follow me?"

Emi gives Tassira a flat stare.

"Normally I'd say suit yourself. But tonight we were practically within arm's reach of her until everyone inside was tipped off about you. So no, this isn't about what you want for the guard and it's eventual reputation. It's about actually being effective."

"If you'd rather cripple us than take that f&+!ing piece of cloth off, we should have a discussion tomorrow about working separately. I'm not going to waste my time like this anymore."

"Best of luck at the flat. You better find somewhere very, very dark to wait."

Emi waits out of sight for about 15 minutes before going back inside the bar. She fumes the entire time. How can someone so smart not understand the concept of camouflage?

Kayleigh's jaw drops momentarily when Tassira stands up to Emileva on the subject of the Guard and their cloaks. She blanches a bit at Emi's harsh reply before pleading with the swordswoman, "Come with us, please! I fear this place has become too dangerous for you to stay here alone. Your cover may be blown...our fault, sorry."

Then a kooky idea strikes her and she adds, "Don't force us to take you into custody!"

Tassira pauses in her stride--not because of Emileva, but because of Kayleigh's idea.

So, technically, it's partially because of Emileva.

She turns and faces her, her fingers crackling with green lightning. "Because it'd be much easier on you if you just came quietly. I'm tired and I hate making people scream. It gets me down."

Emi doesn't even turn around until Kayleigh's threat, or whatever it is, comes. Then she does stop and turn to gawk.

"Are you insane? On what grounds? You're going to reform the Guards' reputation by behaving just like them? Displeased so you'll try to yank me off the street?"

Emi resumes walking away. "Just try. Change of plan. I won't be meeting you later. I'll be going back to the temple to collect my stuff."

...something snaps inside the mageling.

"That's it, then?! You're just going to run away when things get tough?" She starts storming after Emileva. "Just like everyone else in this pit of a city?!"

"That's the only thing anyone ever does! Don't bother FIXING the problem! Just stick your head in the sand and pray it'll go away! That'll solve EVERYTHING!" Tassira's worked herself up into a frenzy. "Got hooked on drugs? Not my problem--YOU sort it out, you weak little b$!%#! It's YOUR fault for not being good enough to get by without them!"

She's starting to curse. Were her parents around, they'd undoubtedly be offended.

"Oh, you got kidnapped by a crime lord as a kid and forced to be one of his slaves? Tough luck! Not MY problem! Why should I even TRY to help you get better?!" Tears are collecting in the corners of her eyes. "Your brother got stabbed and the Guard aren't doing anything about it? Whatever! Piss off! YOU deal with it!"

She rips her Guard cloak off. "IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR THIS 'F~&&ING PIECE OF CLOTH' TO MEAN SOMETHING GOOD ANYMORE?!"

And at that moment, the tears flow down her face, and she falls to her knees in the street, sobbing. Ravnos hops out of her backpack and moves in front of her, looking up into her eyes.

Kayleigh blinks in surprise when things take a nasty, dangerous turn between Tassira and Emileva. Although Tassira seems the more distraught of the two, Kayleigh chooses to address Emi first.

"Oh, for heaven's sake Emileva! I was kidding--mostly--about taking you into custody. I just didn't want you going off on your own--it's too dangerous. And Regeris is apparently out there on his own right now. You're not going to walk away from him as well, are you?"

In what's likely a surprising move, the young priestess then pulls off her Guard cloak. "There--I did some thinking like you suggested and have decided the Guard's not for me. I'm not going to just slink off into the shadows, though; we all made vows to Field Marshal Croft and she deserves the courtesy of a proper resignation. And I'm prepared to return the gold and equipment she gave us to aid in that role. But that's tomorrow; today we have unfinished work. Are you with us?"

:O I wasn't expecting to wake up to all this.

Nebbin starts to take his cloak off at Emileva's request, but before he gets the chance to do anything more than reach for the clasp, Tassira objects.

Mouth hanging lower and lower with every word -- his own sputtering attempts to interject rushed over before he even gets a chance to start speaking -- he can do nothing back look back and forth between the two women (and an occasional glance at Kayleigh) as the fight escalates.

He starts to move to stand between the two fighting women, not wanting one to get hit by lightning, but doesn't even have a chance before Tassira's sobbing on her kneees.

He rushes to the girl's side and takes her in an embrace that would be nothing but sweetness and comforting if it weren't so awkward as he tries to make sure it's brotherly and platonic.

He pats her shoulder, not quite being able to reach her back.

"Don't cry, Tassira!" he says. "We all just need to calm down. Maybe we can start picking where we wear our cloaks, and when we do good things in them, word will spread and then we can wear them other places. Um, I'm sure Emileva never said any of those things. They don't really sound like her, and I'm sure you weren't really going to kill her with your magic. ..."

He trails off, looking helplessly at Kayleigh and Emileva.

Kayleigh lets out a tired sigh; that look of helplessness from Nebbin always seems to get to her, and this instance is no exception. "Maybe you're right about wearing the cloaks part-time," she tells the gentle giant. "When we signed up, that's not exactly how I looked at things, though, and experience has taught us that being a competent, helpful guard in Korvosa at this time is a full-time job...and then some."

The priestess pauses before addressing Tassira. "Despite what Emi says, you and I are right in our belief that the people of this city need to trust and respect the Guard again or total anarchy will rule the streets...if it doesn't already. But Emi's right, too: the distrust and enmity between citizen and Guard is real, palpable, and unlikely to go away any time soon...unless we devote all our time and energy to that cause."

"There just aren't enough hours in a day! For me personally, I feel responsible for the surviving priests of Aroden and the Lambs they so selflessly took in. I'm trying to get Carawyn off her shiver addiction so I can help your mother with hers. I feel like I'm not up to snuff as a true priestess of Milani. And then there's my obligation to you all, plus the need to find Olaf's killer. All these things I rank as more important than serving in the Guard."

"I've even used my magic to pull all-nighters to try to keep up, but all the extra time has provided me with are more things for me to fail at...."

The words catch in Kayleigh's throat and suddenly she's on the verge of tears herself. She turns away for a few moments to wipe some blowing dust or pollen from her eyes. When she turns back, she's facing Emileva but not making eye contact.

"I apologize. You were right: I need to prioritize what's most important. I'm not saying Tassira and I are wrong; just that you were right."

To Tassira, Kayleigh says, "We aren't responsible for the tension between Korvosa's citizens and its Guard. Fixing that fractured trust is important, but the truth is we aren't going to be able to manage that overnight. Let's put that on the back burner for now and concentrate on today's missions: getting Trinia off the streets and making sure Regeris doesn't get hurt off on his own, OK?"

Kayleigh manages a weak smile as she stands over Tassira and Nebbin, offering the kneeling mage her hand.

Regeris swears violently under his breath as he realizes that his quarry may be Trinia herself. He comes to the edge of the balcony and looks at the jump before looking to the stairs.

Realizing he's going to have to track his quarry rather than simply chase her, he takes the safer route to get down to the stage before looking around. At a complete guess, he picks the three-storey building and keeps a low profile as he heads there.

Emileva is clearly exasperated, but Tassira's breakdown breaks her deadlock with the mage.

"I never said I wouldn't work with the Guard any longer. The question is can I do so with you. Look, all I'm saying is the uniforms are a tool. We have to choose the right tools for the situation at hand. We're not in The Heights, they're not a good tool here."

"Trinia was sitting right there. Regeris and I might have been able to talk her out of the place with a little time. Probably not, but it was at least a possibility. Or, if we'd all been able to go in within scaring everyone off, we might have been able to grab her even though it was crowded."

"This isn't the time for debating it though. The best thing we can do for Regeris is be where he expects us to be. Go to the flat. I'll wait here until it's clear she or her friends aren't returning. That's what Regeris is expecting. Then I'll come to the flat. I'll be fine."

Tassira doesn't say anything, only dimly aware of Nebbin's hug and Kayleigh's attempt at reassuring her. Eventually, she collects herself enough to pick up her Guard cloak and unsteadily get back to her feet.

"...you've made your point..." She barely manages to say, looking down at the calico tabby before her. She reaches her hands out, and Ravnos hops into her arms, purring. "...let's go."

Her expression is streaked with tears & sorrow--it's the face of a young woman who's completely lost and unsure of what to do.

Kayleigh gives Ravnos a quick scratch behind the ears, knowing that (for the moment at least) the feline familiar is more capable of comforting Tassira than she is. Nebbin, as usual, is right there offering his help and compassion, so Kayleigh asks him to help Tassira and stay close to her.

"I'll lead the way to the flat and keep an eye out for trouble along the way," she says.

Emi watches the others leave. She’s still too worked up to consider apologizing for anything, so instead she offers a palliative ”be careful”.

After waiting a few more minutes, Emi reenters the bar. She goes straight up the two flights of stairs and back into the room where she and Regeris had spotted the presumed Trinia earlier. Finding a seat at the bar allowing views of both the stairway and rooftop doorways, she calls to the bartender. ”Hit me, whiskey and an ale to chase it with.”

Over the next hour she nurses the drinks while watching the entrances. More drink would be better, but she needs to stay sharp.

She fills the time mostly with wondering why she can’t help but instantly go straight for the throat in disputes now. She’s had a few scorched-earth, sort of victories recently, and it’s new to her. In her head during them she can tell she should probably pull back a little, but she can’t.

She doubts anyone she’s hanging around with now could possibly believe how agreeable she was until recently, specifically until after Ansel. With her uncle, at school, with Ansel, she went along no matter if she thought otherwise. She was so very ‘yes sir’, ‘sure, if that’s what you want’, ‘anything you say baby’.

All she had gotten from it was the lesson that agreeable people provide the broken bodies that pave the roads to where other people want to go.

Since you mentioned tracking I DMPC rolled Regeris a Survival check and rolled a straight 20. So no guessing needed.

Regeris notices at the spot where the jumper landed that there was a black mold on the roof-stage, and that the jumper likely busted their ass in it. Smudges of the mold stain the ground in the direction of the girl's flight - it was towards the stairwell house.

Moving as fast as his tracking skill allows, Regeris follows the occasional marks down to the ground floor and out a side exit into the street. He catches the fleetest glimpse of a cloaked figure on the other side of the street before it disappears up some steps and into a spice market.

Dashing across the street himself, Regeris finds the market mostly deserted, with no sign of the girl. There is a set of steps leading up, however. Two flights later, following half-heard footsteps on the steps above him, he comes to doors leading to a rooftop balcony. There's a make-shift plank walkway from the balcony Regeris is standing on, to the roof of the next Bridgefront block.

Poised three-quarters of the way across the walkway is the cloaked person Regeris is following. Even as he sees his prey, his attention is drawn to yet more trouble. Another riot broken out in one of the squares ahead of him.

As Nebbin follows the two women back to the flat, he looks concerned at them. He starts to speak several times, then stops.

"So we're taking off our cloaks, right?" he finally asks in a very small voice.

"Yes." Tassira sighs, feeling more than a little defeated.

Ravnos doesn't move from her arms.

Kayleigh notices the low spirits of her two companions as she leads the way back to Trinia's stepmother's flat. Another failure to add to your growing resume, she thinks bitterly.

"We don't have to," she tells her companions. "We were wearing them when we were here earlier, so there's no reason not to wear them now. On the other hand, though, we don't really need the cloaks to do what's right and make this city a better place: It's who lies beneath the cloaks that truly make a difference. And I have no doubt that you two are among the kindest and most capable citizens walking the streets of Korvosa these days."

Kayleigh doesn't offer one of her usual reassuring smiles; it's almost as if she doesn't need to, as though she's just stating obvious facts.

Belatedly, the Milanite remembers that she's supposed to be on the lookout for trouble or danger.

Woo!

Regeris mutters a quiet prayer to Milani that his training is paying off as he falls into his natural element and trails his quarry from the stage, to the market, and finally up the stairs. Realizing he's getting even closer to her, he pauses as he sees that yet another riot is breaking out.

Just for clarification - we're on a walkway leading to a rooftop. Is the riot on the rooftop or in the streets below - like is it directly blocking her progress? Is it between us?

Regeris - No, it's down in the street ahead of you both. In the direction she seems to be leading you, which is vaguely northwest.

Regeris, please give me another perception, stealth & survival (tracking) roll as you continue to trail her.

Emileva fails to find any new leads hiding among her demons. Instead it begins to rain again, and the balcony doors are shut. More lamps are lit and the place begins to take on the smells of a supper being prepared.

The couple does not return, but the waitress does several times, trying to refill Emi's cup.

Nebbin, Tassira and Kayleigh return to the square outside the entrance to the flat. The Pharasmin's Wain has gone and with it, apparently the extra guards from Old Dock that Grau sent along with you.

Are you three setting up a new ambush in the room? Or waiting outside?

I'd say we'd go inside, especially if it's raining.

Emi slowly gives up on the idea of the friends returning. She hadn't really expected it anyway. But, since they have no other clues to follow, she figured it was best to be sure.

She hopes Regeris not returning yet means good news. If he had lost the woman quickly he probably would have returned by to the bar by now. It's closer than the flat. She decides to wait the length of one more slow drink so see if he will show up.

The next time the waitress comes around, Emi accepts.

Yeah, we'll go inside where it's dry. We can hang low in the apartment, hiding in hopes someone else comes in.

Nebbin is too big to hide well, though he tries to duck behind a curtain that doesn't clash too much with his guard's cloak.

"Aren't cats bad at watching things? Or, at least bad at letting you know? I mean dogs bark, but cats just kind of ... plot to kill you in your sleep?"

Nebbin is dubious a cat could ever do a good job at anything. See, Nebbin *is* smart! He knows cats are NOT to be trusted.

At least cats can hunt mice & other pests.

Tassira sets her calico tabby down and looks her in the eye. "Ravnos, I want you to keep watch for a young blonde woman with brown eyes. If you see her, come back and nip me, OK?"

The tabby *meows* in response before wandering out to the stairwell of the apartment building and settling in.
