Character Creation: For Curse of the Crimson Throne

Races: All Core races, plus gillmen, hobgoblin, orc, ratfolk, and tiefling.

Classes: No ninja, samurai, gunslinger (or gun-related archetype). Unchained classes are required. Vigilante is allowed, but you must revise it when it's released. Also, material from dreamscarred press and rogue genius games is allowed. Starting gold will be the average for your class.

Alignment: No Chaotic Evil characters allowed. Paladins' alignment restriction includes Neutral Good, and antipaladins may be Neutral or Lawful Evil.

Stats: Stats will be generated by a 20-pt buy. You get two traits, one of which must be campaign. You may also use drawbacks.

Unchained: We'll be utilizing Background Skills, Automatic Bonus Progression, and the Wound Threshold system.

Here is the list of campaign traits and here is the link to the players' guide. Read up as you will.

Curse of the Crimson Throne is a gritty, urban campaign that takes place in a city far past its own prime, and what brings the party together is past trauma.

I definitely approve of being able to be a neutral good paladin. :)

Dotted for intere- oh wait. :P

Hm. If not bolt ace, then brawler maybe? More research is required.

Here is a Map of Korvosa

Information About Korvosa:

The Castle; The Nobility: No King of Korvosa has ever died of old age, something that likely weighs heavily on the current king - Eodred Arabasti, who is in his late 50s. Recently, Eodred did something that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way - he married a woman 30 years younger than him, a Chelaxian named Ileosa. Beautiful in the extreme, she's also seen as a shallow gold-digger.

Speaking of shallow, Eodred himself is not a particularly popular king. While Korvosa is in a period of economic boom now, during his reign, he is greedy and egocentric. He redirects a lot of the city's revenue right back to himself, and there are multiple monuments to him scattered throughout the city. The economic boom isn't even attributed to him, as much of the actual governing is done by the steward, a man called Neolandus Kalepopolis.

Korvosa is replete with nobility - a large class of wealthy who the poorer classes of the city mostly disapprove of.

The Shingles: An area of Old Korvosa that lies right up against the bridge, gentrification of Old Korvosa has forced a large amount of the city's poor into it. The Shingles is an area where the buildings are piled haphazardly on top of one another like a Brazilian slum. Climbing is a vital skill here, and most of the people who live here learn to fight, to run, or die because there is a fecund choker infestation here which refuses to die out, even though multiple city attempts to exterminate it.

The Police: There are three forms of law enforcement in an around the city. The Korvosan Guard is every bit a classic guard organization. Led by the honorable Marshall Cressida Kroft, the men and women who run the Guard keep day-to-day order on the streets. Their headquarters is the Citadel Volshenyek, a fortress on the Bay.

The Sable Company is an organization of hippogriff-mounted police. They use their air superiority to assist the Guard whenever necessary, although they answer directly to the steward, Mr. Kalepopolis. As such, they assist with whatever needs the royal house has. They are frequently rangers, although paladins and cavaliers also exist amongst their numbers.

Citadel Vraid, the home of the Order of the Nail Hellknights, rests only a few miles away from Korvosa. A Hellknight hasn't been on official business inside the city since 4682, when Queen Domina invited them into the city to help keep order. Their brutal tactics has fostered enmity between the Hellknights and the citizens of the city ever since, and soured Domina's reputation.

The Gray District: Korvosa's dead are sent to the Gray district, the city's mausoleum. The district is occupied by the Church of Pharasma, the second-largest cathedral in the city (after the very centralized Bank of Abadar) who keep watch over the district, looking for any thieving necromancers. The district is huge, and much of it goes without oversight. Unfortunately, this means that Korvosa has a rather significant problem with necromancers.

The Acadamae: One of the most prestigious centers for arcane learning in Varisia, the Acadamae is guarded by tall walls and is primarily a conjuration school (no graduate of it can have opposed conjuration) though they teach all eight schools of magic. Run by Toff Ornelos (a nobleman who is also a conjurer of staggering power) time spent in the school is frequently very dangerous. Magical experiments and called but uncontained creatures lead to a high mortality rate among the students. However, prestige in graduating leads to a high application rate.

One of the final exams is to call an imp. Unfortunately, many novice wizards find this task beyond them, leading to the imp's release. Years of this have resulted in a serious imp epidemic in Korvosa - dozens or hundreds of the creatures call the city's alleyways and rooftops home. Fortunately, there is also an infestation of pseudodragons in the city, and the two species of creatures constantly vie for territory between themselves, resulting in huge midair battles seasonally.

Also, there is a feat for graduates of the Acadamae.

I have arrived!

Oh, question. How are we doing starting wealth?

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

Varisians and Shoanti: Varisians are generally looked down upon as a second class of citizens in Korvosa. So much so, in fact, that one of the settlements on the far side of the Jeggare River, mostly inhabited by Varisians, has taken to be called "Thief's Camp". Still, despite the discrimination many Varisians stay in the area.

For Shoanti, however, things are worse. Korvosa used to be Shoanti territory, before the Chelaxians came to take it by force. Things are understandably tense between the two ethnic groups. Shoanti who come to Korvosa face harassment and people who harass Shoanti frequently face violence. Rumour has it that a Skoan-Quah shaman is here in Korvosa, trying to rectify the tense situation between the two groups, however.

There's more if you're curious.

In terms of starting wealth - it's above. Average by class.

Hello! <3

I have a busy work week. I'll try and get something up this weekend. Probably gonna be something occult *spooky fingers*

;)

Do you have a problem with Thassilonian Specialist at all?
What it nets my build: An extra Mage Armor a day (Or other conjuration spell I learn), and I can never cast Illusion or Evocation Wizard spells. In a full build it becomes nuts, but as a dip, it grants me some sustainability for my Mage Armor. :P

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

I have no problem with a Thassilonian Specialist, assuming that your character is obsessed with Thassilon/emulating their spellcasters.

Please let me know if you have any questions about anything, and feel free to make your characters know each other sometimes. The introduction is ensured to introduce you, of course.

;)

Hm. Actually. Good point; learning from your father's spellbook doesn't really scream 'well-versed in thasillonian studies'. No biggy. :)

AH I cant decide!

If anyone else is interested in playing someone with underworld connections, that would be a good way for our characters to know each other. Aaron has a bit of a reputation in the right circles.

Any chance of using pre-errata animal soul?

I'm seriously considering doing a Shoanti who ended up exiled by her Quah after she was found to be pregnant with the child of a Chelaxian. She ended up in Korsova with her husband, and (long story short) had her daughter kidnapped.

Gonna really play up the feral aspect of the character, and the old Animal Growth/Atavism friendly version is definitely nicer than just being able to ignore spells/abilities that don't affect animals.

@Aaron "Hatchet Man" Crispin:

-You mentioned that your character would hardly scoff at murder, that your character is a professional burglar and criminal. What keeps him from being Evil alignmentally?

-As a worshipper of Norgorber, how dedicated is he to the religion? Does he go to church? Does he perform obediences?

-Does Aaron have any friends?

Male Human (Chelaxian/Varisian) Slayer (Cutthroat) 1/Alchemist (Toxicant) 1 | HP: 20/20 | AC: 15, touch 11, flat-footed 14 | CMD: 16 | Fort: +4, Reflex: +3, Will: +2 | Init: +1 | Perception +4

General Questions:

1. Bouncer officially, various contracted criminal activities. He's not terribly well off, but he's frugal and careful with his coin.

2. Lamm knows something about his fiance's murder. Aaron is going to find out what. He is very, very angry and feels a bit empty inside after her death.

3. True Neutral, but frequently bordering on Neutral Evil.

4. Not a spell caster, but he does occasionally pay respects to Norgorber and sometimes Pharasma.

5. Not anymore, they all died when he was younger.

6. Yup.

7a. Find out what happened to his fiance.
7b. Earn enough money to leave Korvosa for good and find somewhere peaceful to live.
7c. Retire away from the city and be done with all the unpleasantness in his past.

Specific Questions:

Murder: not a lot keeps him from being evil and he skirts it quite frequently. He's not cruel or terribly violent, he just doesn't have the talent to make a lot of money any other way and he's sick of being poor. Honestly, he could be the 'evil as a day job' kind of evil and it wouldn't change much.

Religion: Not terribly dedicated. He respects Norgorber as a patron of thieves, murder, and secrets (all things he needs for his profession), but doesn't follow religion too closely. He performs major observances and holidays, but otherwise not much. A brief daily prayer in the evening and maybe a small offering when he has a particularly challenging job as well.

Friends: Aaron has a few friends. He has a regular fence who doubles as a drinking buddy, an elf named Silas, and he got close to a few of the other staff at the Lamia's Den since he started working there. He's grown distant since Catarina's death though, and all of them are noticing it.

For the unchained rogue, are archetypes still applicable? Like, if something swaps out trap sense, would it just swap out danger sense instead?

Edit: Also, do you mind if we alter the flavor for the campaign traits a bit? Not necessarily being directly related to the kidnapee, for example.

Most of the Curse adventure path is about making Korvosa a better place to live. Would money (significant payment) motivate Aaron enough to stay, even when things get really bad and dangerous?

I'm gonna say yes to the fighter but no to the rogue - there's already an altered rogue class.

If you want to use something, it also has to be on the PRD - you have to be able to point it out to me so that I can read it.

If Korvosa was less of a sh*tty place to live, he'd be fine staying. He wants a good life, which doesn't seem possible in Korvosa (at least in his head). If it was clear that he would be well paid and Korvosa less nasty, he'd be satisfied. It's more quality of life than location.

What? Half-Elf Writer 1 / Dancer 1 / Chemist 1

I also wanted to say something - If you want to, and you're variant multiclassing... I want to try out the system of gaining actual spellcasting. We'll use the following rules (it only applies when you're variant multiclassing in a class that can gain 9th-level spells, and it replaces all other boons you get):

Specifically, these boons are available to those variant-multiclassing with druid, cleric, sorcerer, wizard, or oracle. Witch is not available because of the addition of the familiar class feature.

At 1st-level, choose a spellcasting class. You gain spellcasting as a 1st-level character of that class, save that you cannot gain bonus spells from any source, including a high ability score, domains, specialization schools, etc. You must still meet the minimum ability score requirements to cast spells from that class.

At 3rd, 7th, 11th, 15th and 19th level, increase your effective caster level by 1 for the purposes of that class.

A wizard variant multiclass gains a spellbook as part of this class feature - this spellbook starts play with a number of 1st-level spells in it equal to its owner's Int score, plus all cantrips. Whenever you would gain a caster level from this feature, you choose 2 spells to add to your spellbook.

A caster level gained from using this feature can't be increased in any way other than by level gain. This includes using prestige classes to increase it, and this caster level cannot be used to fulfill the any prerequisites for a prestige class.

Is it possible for me to take Deadly Agility from Path of War? The reason being: I want to wield a dagger (as it's Pharasma's Holy Weapon), but there is literally no other way to make a dagger deal Dex-to-Damage. I don't intend to dual-wield, either. Deadly Agility:

Deadly Agility (Combat)

You have learned how to use your agility to greater purpose in battle.

Prerequisite(s): Weapon Finesse, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit(s): You may add your Dexterity modifier in place of your Strength modifier when wielding a light weapon or a weapon that gains the benefits of the Weapon Finesse feat (such as the rapier) when determining additional damage inflicted upon a successful attack.

This modifier to damage is not increased for two-handed weapons, but is not reduced for off-hand weapons.

1. For a profession, what does your character do? How good are they at it/how well-off are they?

Ila is a tattoo artist, one of the more focused in the city. While she had no children of her own (nor brothers and sisters), her mother had her own ragtag crew of children to look after. She's spent nearly as much time perfecting her magic as she's spent ensuring that the youths that surrounded her had something in their stomaches and a roof over their heads.

2. What did Gaedren Lamm, the notorious criminal, do to you? How did you respond, emotionally to it?

Ila lost her mother and her innocence. She nearly lost her fate... and she still worries about what will become of her when she dies. Denial lead to Anger, which lead to Bargaining... which lead to Acceptance of said bargaining. As such, Ila is still rather upbeat about everything; certainly, she has spent her youth worrying about things she shouldn't need to, but she's stronger for it. She thought that the loss of her mother's body meant little to her... until she found the merchant with her mother's wedding ring, which sparked an old, cold, righteous anger within her. The fact that his choices were opposite hers only served to fuel that anger.
Ila doesn't know: Lamm did not approach her mother, but the other way around; he and his ideals went against everything that Maria stood for. When she heard of what he did for a living, how he used children, and all of the evils he spread, she decided to deliver him unto her Lady for judgment. She lost.

3. Why are you your alignment?

Ila is neutral good because she believes in intent and the greater good. At the end of her life, law and order, chaos and entropy, will have continued on as it would, but the constant of the good that she and others have done will continue onwards, guiding the future in a place of light as opposed to a place of darkness. Most importantly, however: As a worshiper of Pharasma, she recognizes that death is only part of the journey. A journey she hopes to guide Lamm to in the short term.

4. If you're a spellcaster, where are you getting your spellcasting from? If you receive powers from a diety, why do you worship that diety? If you studied, who did you study under and why?

Ila had been studying her (deceased) father's spellbooks off and on ever since she was a little girl. It was a goal of hers to uphold that side of her family's legacy. After all, she took after him, with her blonde hair and blue eyes, marking them both as attuned to magic at an inherent level. She sealed her fate as a wizard when her mother died, however: Pouring over her father's books, she found a ritual for restoring a loved one, but found it ultimately beyond her. Instead, she adopted bits and pieces into her father's ritual for binding a familiar... and that is how we arrived at this point.

She is essentially self-taught, having only learned a cantrip or two from her father before he passed; their family moved into Korvosa shortly after. She weilds her mother's daggers in memory of her, and has learned to weild them when pressed.

Aside from the fact that her mother was a worshiper of Pharasma? A colossal mistake. Stealing her mother's soul from the Boneyard was a significant enough reason to choose penitence as a future choice. But moving beyond that, she sees Pharasma as a goddess of life. Birth, life, and death, all entwined. She has made guiding lost souls into her reason for living. Her mother still being there to guide her is just one more reason.

5. Do you have a family? What are your relationships like with your family?

Ila still has a family; her mother takes the form of a Whippoorwill (Thrush statistics) that prefers to perch on her shoulder, and she has a burgeoning population of orphans to look after and keep safe from becoming a Little Lamm. Describing her relationship is difficult at best; she sees all of the children as a responsibility, a hope, and a promise simultaneously. While she isn't, herself, a mother, she suspects that is what it feels like to be one. In ways, she is overprotective of them, and in others she simply lets them be kids.

6. Are you a Korvosan native? If not, where are you from and why did you move to Korvosa?

Ila isn't from Korvosa, though she might as well be. She was eleven when her father died and seventeen when her mother died. Her mother had moved her to Korvosa when her father died; they had had a business as a traveling apothecary and chirurgeon; her mother was quite handy with fixing people up, while her father was able to make cures for what ailed people's belongings. It was a good life, all things considered, until he became ill, and passed shortly after, despite all of her mother's abilities. He had never been a strong man and had always been a few steps from death.

7a. List a short-term (complete-able within a month) goal for your character.

Return her mother's wedding ring to her. Aside from her spellbook, it is one of the few things that survives from her father, and has significant emotional value.

7b. List a medium-term (complete-able within five years) goal for your character.

Replace Gaedren Lamm. What he does is evil, but at least part of it is a necessary evil; there are children that need to be cared for, that have nowhere else to turn. Unfortunately, he has taken it upon himself to take advantage of the children, permanently changing everything that he touches with his own brand of scars. Whether replacing him with herself, or finding a more suitable replacement, she wants to see the children (and adults) grow older without fear of Gaedren Lamm.

7c. List a long-term (complete-able by the time you die) goal for your character.

See Korvosa's political landscape change entirely. A new ruler that will last, and do good things. A nobility that didn't sit on the back of the lower class, and far, far fewer children in the streets.

Hopefully, repurposing an Avatar doesn't bug you too much. :) Also, why 'Mistress' in the title of the campaign? :3

I've got most of her background sorted out in my mind now, just need to write it up, so here's some answers to the questions!

1. For a profession, what does your character do? How good are they at it/how well-off are they?

Auraelia was a trained hunter/warrior when she was still with her Quah. Currently she does odd jobs around the city, functioning somewhere between hired muscle and bounty hunter, although she avoids anything outright illegal. When she can't find work, she will travel outside the city to attempt to hunt game to help feed her family. While she and her husband aren't living in poverty, they have little in savings and often find themselves just barely scraping by.

2. What did Gaedren Lamm, the notorious criminal, do to you? How did you respond, emotionally to it?

During one of her hunting trips her daughter disappeared while under the care of her husband. When Auraelia returned, she was distraught to find her daughter gone. The two of them alternated searching for information about her whereabouts, although her husband's work as a blacksmith limited his ability to contribute significantly.

When she heard about Gaedren Lamm and his possible ties to her daughter's disappearance, her grief gave way to rage. Despite being banished from her Quah, and under threat of death, she returned to beg her father for her inheritance that she might rescue her daughter and sate her need for vengeance.

3. Why are you your alignment?

Auraelia naturally falls somewhere between Neutral Good and Neutral. Prior to now, she was content to live with her husband in peace, trying to avoid causing any harm to others. Much like a mother bear whose cubs are being threatened, however, the abduction of her daughter has eliminated good or evil from the equation entirely. Her sole concerns are a) her daughter's safety, and b) Gaedren Lamm's death by her hands. She's willing to do whatever is necessary to achieve those two goals.

4. If you're a spellcaster, where are you getting your spellcasting from? If you receive powers from a diety, why do you worship that diety? If you studied, who did you study under and why?

Auraelia's mother was the head Shaman of her Quah. It was under her tutelage that she learned to call upon the power of the totem animals to alter her form, as well as for calling upon natural magic like druids do.

5. Do you have a family? What are your relationships like with your family?

Auraelia's mother and father remain in her Quah. Apart from a brief visit recently to claim her inheritance, she has hardly spoken to them in the past decade. They are estranged not through any choice of her own, or her parents. Instead it's due to the decision of the council of elders of her Quah, who stripped her of her position within the Quah and banished her for carrying the child of a Chelaxian man.

She lives in Korvosa with her Husband, a kind and hard-working Chelaxian man who is apprenticed to a blacksmith, and whom she loves dearly. The two were married in Korvosa after Auraelia was banished, and stripped of her membership in the Quah, she took his last name as her own.

6. Are you a Korvosan native? If not, where are you from and why did you move to Korvosa?

Auraelia is a Shoanti who was banished from her Quah. Her husband lived and worked in Korvosa apart from the occasional trip with a caravan, and so she settled there with him to have their child. Since then they have stayed there for lack of anywhere else to go.

If she could find a way to make amends with her Quah she would gladly take her husband and daughter back to live among them. She's haunted by shame of being exiled, as the Quah had been her family, but has no regrets about her decision to stay with her husband.

7a. List a short-term (complete-able within a month) goal for your character.

The only goal in the short term is the quenching of her rage. She will save her daughter or die trying, and she will mete out punishment to Gaedren Lamm, repaying the suffering he's caused her and her daughter hundred-fold.

7b. List a medium-term (complete-able within five years) goal for your character.

The desire for her daughter to have a place among her people is strong. Given time she will seek to atone to her quah in some way so that her daughter might be accepted as a member, even if she must remain in exile.

7c. List a long-term (complete-able by the time you die) goal for your character.

While she doesn't believe she'll live to see her people accept her relationship with a Chelaxian, she wants them to understand why she did what she did. If she could she would change the attitudes the citizens of Korvosa and the Shoanti have towards each other. She has seen much suffering both experienced and caused by Shoanti in Korvosa.

Even if she can't benefit from it, she hopes that there might be some way to mend the relations between the two so that people like herself and her husband (and her daughter, of course) would be able to live their lives without being continuously punished for bridging that gap.

Potentially a bow focused war priest currently, are you allowing the alternate tiefling heritages?

Is it possible for me to take Deadly Agility from Path of War? The reason being: I want to wield a dagger (as it's Pharasma's Holy Weapon), but there is literally no other way to make a dagger deal Dex-to-Damage. I don't intend to dual-wield, either. I also don't get a feat for it available until 5th or later. :) Thank you for consideration.

** spoiler omitted **

Sure! Although I'm fairly certain that Slashing Grace counts for a dagger, which is both a slashing and a piercing weapon. Especially since they errata'd it.

Slashing Grace can only apply to one-handed weapons (light weapons need not apply), which is a shame, because it excludes stuff like whips. RIP Calistrian warpriest. :(

Also, it's a mistress campaign because we're cheating on Kioralady with it.

;)

Hah. I didn't know Daggers were slashing and piercing. Guess I'll work my way there a little slower.

And they errata'd slashing grace to work for both. :)

Yes, tiefling variant heritages can be taken if you want to, and without the use of the Fiendish Heritage feat. However, the table of alternate abilities is not available.
