200th post. Yay! :-P

I know - and some of the posts weren't even about rules queries!

Took a bit longer since since I became interested in the witch and decided to go full-spellcaster (sorta).

But here is my submission: Gehenna, a white-haired witch who has been under Lamm's thumb since childhood. Although she despises him, she doesn't yet have the power to do anything about it.

Not using VMC, but will be testing out all the spellcasting rules instead. I haven't listed an esoteric components for the character yet, since I really need to reread that chapter again first, but it seems interesting.

i believe i'm finished with the adjustments. I just need to update the summary stats as far as i can see.

Rejoice one and all for the hour draws near. :-)

Recruitment will be closed in 7 hours. After that time, no new applicants will be accepted.

Once recruitment is closed, existing applicants will have a further 24 hours (i.e. until midnight Monday/Tuesday, UK time) to finalise characters if you have not already done so.

From Tuesday morning onwards I will review the submissions and do my best to come to a quick decision. The first gameplay post should be up by next Saturday.

Any more questions?

In the opening post you said you'll be picking between 4 and 6 players: already decided on how big the party will be, or we won't know it until the big reveal? ;)

Hmmm... I'd prefer 4, just because I think there'll be a lot of rules queries and smaller numbers are easier to handle. But I haven't ruled out a larger group.

Watch this space, basically ;-)

Bummer, I like big groups. :(

More chances to get in, among other things. <.<

To be honest, not a lot from my character needs to be changed. None of the VMC abilities are available yet. I think I'll change the trait from Framed to Missing Child, since that feels like a stronger motivation.

+1. Especially on the second part. :-P

I changed up a couple of things - I still needed one trait, so I added the carefully hidden trait.

I also changed a little of Juliet's backstory, taking out the more revolutionary bits - I figure that's something that can be developed if she's selected, and the backstory is a little cleaner without it. Everything changed is in the profile, but I've also posted the changed bits below for ease of perusing, Unchained DM:

changed backstory:

Background Concepts

6. As she has been hanging out with artists, students and people from Korvosa's underground, Juliet went through a period of experimentation with drugs, which landed her in some trouble with one Gaedren Lamm.

Gaedren Lamm

1. Juliet first met Gaedren Lamm through her brother, Tybalt (see People, below, for more on Tybalt). Before long, Juliet had begun selling drugs among her artist circle, and using them herself. First using stimulants to help her with her late nights, and depressants to help her sleep, with an occasional stimulant/stimulant cycle for days-long benders that would end in hard crashes.

2. Once Lamm had Juliet hooked on drugs and firmly enmeshed in his narcotics operations, Lamm gave Juliet an ultimatum - get invited to high society functions (and take along a guest of Lamm's choosing) or else. What Lamm's "or else" - the notification of the guard, something bad to happen to Tybalt or Juliet, or something else - was veiled in general threats, but it was enough just the same. Juliet's escorts to these parties find an excuse at some point to slip away for a bit of safe breaking or rummaging through the study - not for valuables, but for papers; it's amazing what people will commit to paper, little secrets Lamm can treasure. So, for now, Juliet slings narcotics to artists and high society types, and helps Lamm's men get the secrets of the wealthy.

3. Soon after Gaedren's ultimatum, Juliet went on a bender and then got herself sober. She's taken to spending her early mornings walking Korvosa's alleys, trying to think her way out of the box Gaedren has put her in. The only decision she's come to is that Gaedren has to go. The sooner and more permanently, the better.

Good luck, everyone. There's a lot of really strong concepts here, and I really love these backstories - lots of really good writing and interesting hooks.

Liberty's Edge

I think it would be best to have 5 characters, to have some margin if a player leave.

Good luck all.

Good luck everyone!

BTW: I updated Lorick's crunch to fit your format here:

Here

Since I do not plan to multiclass my guy if selected, is there some worthwhile alternate racial trait that replaces the half-elf's Multitalented?

Edit: Where are my manners? Good luck to all! :-)

Good luck everyone!

@F.Castor: unfortunately, the only useful thing that replaces multitalented is for arcane casters only. :/

Missed that. Thanks.

Ok, hope this is even half decent as I have not had the time needed to really refine my character.

May I present Talgar Filnarn, Arcanist, maker of alchemical creations, and mediocre comedian.

I intend to test/use:

Background skills and expanded skills (pages 46-53)
Variant Multiclassing (pages 88-91) - most likely Bard or Alchemist, not sure which
Revised action economy (pages 102-109)
Limited magic (pages 146-147)
Wild magic (pages 147-148)
Overclocked spells - most likely, although I have not read this section
Esoteric components (pages 150-155; the "optional" variant) - possibly if DM Unchained tosses, or forces, them on me
Automatic bonus progression (pages 156-157)
Scaling magic items (pages 160-179)
Dynamic magic item creation (pages 180-191) - unlikely I will have the Item Creation feats, but possibly

*Clicks stopwatch*

One hour and fifteen minutes from the deadline.
That was close, Tirion. ;)

Here are a couple of additional NPCs or three that Vaenathis knows, making his acquaintances six in total. And with this my submission should be complete. Once again, good luck to everyone! :-)

Faces Past and Present (Addendum):
Caledrin Konnal is Vaen's elven father. A scout and a ranger, albeit one with perhaps an affinity for cities rather than forests, he calls Kyonin, specifically Greengold, home. Still, be it wandelust and the desire to travel and experience more than his birthplace has to offer, or be it some assignment from those of his compatriots with either the position and power or the money and means to employ him, he finds himself away from the elven kingdom quite often. Of course, ever since he took to raising his son, his journeys became less frequent, a fact that has changed in recent times due to Vaenathis being old and skilled enough to accompany him on his trips. This may be especially true after Vaen left for Varisia in order to reconnect with his mother; although Caledrin is in no particular hurry to see the woman whom he believes had forsaken both him and their son until she found herself in need of help, he may very well visit Korvosa himself eventually, if for no other reason than to make sure that Vaen has not bitten off more than he can chew.

Kieyanna, or Key as Vaenathis tends to call her, is a "lady of the night" who frequents Korvosa's North Point, though she des have a tendency to move around. She, like Vaen, is a half-elf and a striking one at that. They are close friends and despite the almost perpetual flirting, or teasing as they call it, their relationship has never gone beyond friendship. They will share a meal, they will share a drink, they may even share a room, but they have not shared a bed. Having met almost as soon as Vaen stepped foot in Korvosa, tehy found in each other a kindred spirit, and not only because they are both half-elven. And although he is not particularly happy about what she does for a living, mostly due to its potential risks, he is not one to try to change her mind about it; as far as he can tell, it has been her choice so far. The moment it stops being that though... that may very well be another story.

Davor One-Tusk is a mean-spirited half-orc, whose name, or nickname actually, comes from the fact that one of his lower canine teeth is so big as to protrude from his mouth, making it look like it is a tusk, as well as making him speak with a rather distinctive slur; this latter trait may very well contribute to his being mean-spirited actually. A henchman of Gaedren Lamm, to say that he does not like Vaenathis would be a gross understatement. He certainly does not trust the half-elf, nor should he of course, given the circumstances of how Vaen has found himself in Lamm's employ. The half-orc, although willing to work with the half-elven rogue, is rather looking forward to the day when he is given the order to deal with him in a specifically permanent way. Of course, it is not like his animosity towards Vaenathis is unfounded; after all, he is the one who -on Lamm's orders, of course- made the deal with the fisherman to frame Vaen's mother for a murder she did not commit and he is also the one who killed him afterwards. Having to work with her son on occasion does not sit well with Davor, especially considering that he suspects that Vaen in turn suspects that the half-orc played a role in his mother almost being wrongfully convicted and punished for something she had nothing to do with.

Lol - I was thinking that it closed at 9pm EST for some reason. Forgot that the UK is 5 hours ahead of us, not 3. Oops. Good thing I had a meeting this evening and had to get it done early.

Thanks to all for your submissions.

I have some a great deal of thinking to do.

Gah. You haven't made this easy, you know.

About the only conclusion I've come to so far is that I can't possibly pick just 4 of you...

Ah, yes. It was our cunning plan all along, my lord. A plan so cunning, you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel. No, even better. A plan as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning.

Well, you get the idea... ;-P

Woot! Odds are increasing!

You know... with attrition on these boards the way it is, picking extras at the start is probably a good thing... :).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Of course, we just suggested for you to pick 5-6 people because we don't want you to get too stressed on who to pick.
Any suggestions that it may have been because we were aiming to have better chances to get in, instead of simply being worried for your well-being, are completely unfounded.

Crap.

Really? A 1? And in the Recruitment thread no less? Is this a sign of things, or rather rolls, to come? :-P

Etna stole all the good Diplomacy rolls of my other characters for years to come.
Such is the power of Asmodeus!

Come on, the decision should not be that hard.

My plan worked. There is no divine caster available beside me. Buahhahah

OK, this has been ridiculously difficult and I apologise in advance to those of you I haven't picked - you all came up with great concepts.

After a lot of thought, tinkering, second thoughts, more tinkering, and large amounts of whisky, I have a decision. Please will:

Evelyn Gertruade deGrey
Gehenna
Juliet D'Artangen
Lorick Dreck
Vaenathis "Vaen" Konnal

report to the Gameplay thread at their earliest convenience.

Again, my apologies to the rest of you; I'd run a second table, had we but world enough and time...

Awesome! Thanks, DM Unchained! Looking forward to playing with you all.

Just a heads up regarding the Gameplay thread dot: You can post in the Gameplay thread with your character alias and immediately delete it and it will still dot the thread and add it to your campaigns. This has the added bonus of not having the first IC posts be "dot" after "dot" instead of story and character interaction posts. :-)

I blame it on the botched diplomacy roll! :P

Grats to those who made it!

Congrats to the chosen!

AWESOME!!!!

Oh, wait, my name is not on that list.

Goes back to pouting on the sideline.

Congratulations.
