BACKSTORY:
Kel-Varas was the result of an experiment aiming to permanently tie a demon to the material plane and harness its potential. A Lamashtuan cult tried to bind fledgling demons to mortal children still in the mother’s womb in a ritual, so the possessed and the demon would mature together.
Despite the frequently catastrophic births that killed most of the possessed children’s mothers, the signs of demonic possession were sparse and usually harmless, aside from the occasional outburst of wanton cruelty as the demons were not fully matured yet.
The children grew up being trained to become living weapons in the cults service. However the demonic entities possessing these children were more potent than they could handle and they would on occasion lose control, transforming into bloodthirsty beasts that on more than one occasion tore each other apart with their vicious claws and teeth.
Kel-Varas was taught to direct the fury of his literal inner demon Drak’zhar at his enemies and suppress it to prevent it from rampaging aimlessly whenever it could. Although he never gained full control over Drak’zhar, Kel-Varas’s command over the demon is ever growing even today.
The loveless upbringing under the cult’s rule, isolation, rigorous training and pressure of keeping an abyssal denizen inside him in check, that perhaps chafed even more under their incarceration, made Kel-Varas grow up resentful of everyone he knew. Reaching adulthood he found an opportunity to flee. He let Drak’zhar loose.
******
Kel-Varas Drak’zhar’s sight blurred as the demonic powers warped his body, his fingers growing into large claws, horns sprouting from his forehead, he could feel his cheekbones protruding and his teeth elongating into sharp fangs. His eyes trained on the Instructor Kel-Varas Drak’zhar set into motion and hurtled toward the man leaping halfway across the room he slammed into the mans chest and dug his claws deep into his flesh. As the instructor went down the possessed tore his claws free in a bloody arc and brounght the left down once more to tear out the dying man’s throat.
Howling with rage he swung around to look at two of the last three siblings he had, after the other five had succumbed either to the inhuman stress of their training or to the deadly outburst of another sibling. The two guards who oversaw their combat training sessions had left to take the third, his brother Garus away for disciplination because of insubordination.
Mallea and Borvis had also changed and growled an incoherent response. Kel-Varas Drak’zhar leapt off the bloodied corpse of his former combat instructor toward the door, although he had never stepped across the threshold he knew well where the exit to the underground complex that they had been kept in for all their life was. The three possessed sprinted down the corridor.
”Outbreak!”, Kel-Varas Drak’zhar did not recognize the robed man at the turn of the corridor, although he looked familiar. It didn’t matter to him, even as the man turned to run Kel-Varas Drak’zhar hurled himself forward and tore through the man’s leg with the right claw as he slid sideways into the corner. He didn’t stop moving, leaving the wounded man crumpled on the floor, he changed directions and continued for the exit door. Mallea Tar’vash leapt against the wall and pushed herself off to redirect her momentum in the same direction, while Borvis Gra’hal simply trampled the injured man further to the ground as his massive claw tore a chunk out of the corner wall in order to swing the possessed man’s hulking mass toward the exit.
Four men armed with halberds were ready for them around the heavy wood and steel door. Kel-Varas Drak’zhar dodged the blade of one guard and crashed head first into another, his horns tearing deeply into the cultist’s shoulder. Behind him Mallea Tar’vash slammed into the man that had attacked him, claws furiously tearing away the flesh of his face and neck. The other two guards swung their halberds, one biting into Kel-Varas Drak’zhar’s shoulder, sending him to the ground, the other slicing deep into Mallea Tar’vash’s skull, the possessed woman howled one last furious scream before the life left her eyes. With a growl Borvis Gra’hal smashed the body of his sister out of his way even before she could hit the ground and swung a massive claw at the man who was still trying to pull his weapon free from Kel-Varas Drak’zhar’s flesh, ripping the man’s head clean from his shoulders, but he did not anticipate the other man’s retaliation, the long speartip of the halberd dug deep into his throat.
For a few moments Kel-Varas Drak’zhar saw only red, with a deep, throaty growl he slowly hefted himself to his feet and turned toward the remaining guard, he regained his footing tore the weapon still stuck in his shoulder free and broke the shaft in his clenched fist as he roared a challenge to the man who had just pulled his halberd out of the lifeless Borvis’s neck. The man recoiled from the sight only for a moment, but Kel-Varas Drak’zhar could taste his fear and absorbed it, the grievous wound in his shoulder closing as the refreshing energy coursed through his body. He grasped the man by the head and one shoulder and sunk his teeth into the throat, to tear out a bloody chunk of flesh. As he released the lifeless body to drop to the ground like a torn ragdoll Kel-Varas Drak’zhar turned toward the door and with two mighty claw swipes ripped it off its hinges.
*****
Having fled his lifelong prison Kel-Varas eventually found his way to the town of Korvosa. He knew about life outside the cult’s hideout but only second hand. However despite a lack of skills his strong personality helped him find his way around other people. He was careful not to unleash his inner beast out here, as despite his cruel upbringing, he understood the value of society and fitting in as well as keeping a low profile with the cult no doubt still looking for him. Keeping the beast in check often proved difficult, even if he could keep Drak'zhar from assuming full control, Kel-Varas still often felt it dictating his actions by fuelling his rage. He found relief in the drug known as Shiver, it seemed to numb the demon for much longer stretches than him, allowing him to at least walk among people safely after a a rush.
But with time it seemed he needed more and more of the substance to keep the creature subdued, whgich a man named Gaerden Lamm was all to happy to provide for the right price. Eventually Kel-Varas overdosed and almost died in the process.
Knowing that he couldn't continue wasting his body with Shiver he learned to exert his will over the creature on his own and not let it dictate his emotions.
He managed to adapt within a few years, now selling his martial and athletic prowess as a mercenary and adventurer. While on the lookout for the man who got him addicted to Shiver in the first place.
Kel-Varas never found out what became of the cult, his last remaining brother Garus or the man he injured during his escape.

APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY:
Appearance
Kel-Varas is a man of classic patrician handsomeness and flawless posture. He is tall, lean and muscular. Although the red skin, yellow pupil-less eyes and pointed ears give the demonic influence on his body away, he still looks at worst like an ordinary tiefling. His face is clean shaven and his long dark hair neatly combed.
He is clad in heavy dark red scalemail armor with simple black clothing underneath.

When he unleashes Drak’zhar Kelvaras’s cheekbones protrude face elongates into the emaciated visage of a demon, horns protrude from his forehead and his teeth become long needle-like fangs. His back and arms grow ridges that are usually hiddenunderneath his armor and his hands transform into massive, wickedly sharp claw hands. He moves around hunched down and with his clawed hands palms forward like a predator ready to pounce its prey.

Personality
Kel-Varas is a calm and collected man, he is surprisingly eloquent and although his appearance tends to be unnerving he has a winning personality and enjoys a good conversation.
While he has no particular drive to go out of his well to help others Kel-Varas knows and appreciates the value of having people around him and tries to fit in.
He tends to ignore annoyances and rarely reacts disproportionately, although when something does manage to rouse his ire he will respond swiftly and often violently.
He relishes the thrill of combat, bloodshed and the glory of the kill and he relies on no one but himself in battle.
