Female half-orc Slayer/7

Round 3:

Deciding that she would rather deal with a sword to the back than a lightning bolt to the face, Zeljka charges the shaman with her falchion and takes a mighty swing at his neck in an attempt to stop him from finishing his magic.

falchion: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 = 27
damage: 2d4 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 4) + 6 + 1 = 15
confirm critical: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 = 26
critical damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 1) + 6 = 8

The blade sliced deeply into the shaman's neck, cutting into a major artery. As its heart continued to pump, blood rained down on the half-Orc and the water falling from the sky did little to wash it from her face. Looking to see if he would topple, she brought her weapon around at the ready in case he didn't.

I'll have to figure out how all the initiatives and 'who goes first' plays out but good combat.

Zelkja, what's up with all those good rolls? Can I jinx you a little? :)

I intend to recap later today after we hear from Osbun.

Questions?

Oz tried to 5' step closer to the bridge to take cover form it. Gathering power to himself,he tried a different tactic. With a little concentration ice formed under the shaman, potentially causing him to fall.

Thanks for letting us know. We'll keep iceman Osbun shooting those cold rays.

Will the shaman slip?
Will Zelkja get grappled by the lizardmen?
Will lightning start coming down on the companions?

Lots of rolls and variables. :)

I intend to recap later today.

Later today? What's wrong with right now?!?!

If the shaman fell on Oz's icy patch, shouldn't he provoke an Attack of Opportunity from Zeljka for standing from prone or crawling 5 feet? (Or, indeed, beginning to cast again while in her threatened area, if he does neither?)

Oz went first and when the shaman fell, Zelkja hadn't moved yet (and wasn't threatening).

Since he made her concentration check, I ruled that he continued with the casting, similarly to casting in 'violent movement' (DC of 15 + spell level).

Sorry; didn't realize I posted in the wrong thread. :P Fortunately, I could still delete it.

I get that the shaman didn't provoke for falling and didn't lose his spell because he made his Concentration check; but he falls on Oz's initiative, then at the end of the post, on his init, "stepped back" and began casting again without ever getting up from prone, right?

Ah, I see your question. Yes, he is a very agile shaman that one. :)

Seriously, since Zelkja had already 'used' her AoO, there wasn't anyone to take advantage of him getting up and provoking, right?

Ah, I see. I missed that she took an attack of opportunity while provoking an attack of opportunity by moving.

So officially, the shaman used a move action to rise from the prone condition, took a 5-foot-step, and then began casting with his standard action to complete with his standard action next round?

Min was limp with relief when the shaman's concentration was broken by Zeljka's vicious attack, but when he began chanting once more, she called out, "This isn't over yet! We have to finish it!"

Once again, she summoned an acid dart to fling at the lizardfolk caster.

Acid Dart ranged touch 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 -3 if Acid Dart is a physical missile; damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Despite her failure last time, Nsizi decided to try using electricity against the shaman. Stepping forward, she took advantage of his distraction while casting to lunge and grab his arm. Electricity ripped through her hands and through his scaly skin with no difficulty. In the storm, arcs of electricity popped and sparked through the rain. The shaman could take no more - he crumpled to the ground, unmoving, his spell dissipating into the wind.

electricity: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

If the shaman is already dead, then will attack entangled dude instead.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Round 4:

Zeljka's satisfaction at breaking the shaman's concentration was cut short when she realized that he was still alive and that she now had the remaining lizardfolk on her. Growling as she brought her weapon around, she meant to skewer the remaining lizard so that she could finish what she started which was killing the shaman.

falchion: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 1 = 21
damage: 2d4 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 + 1 = 11

Her weapon connected with the creature and caused it to stagger back in pain which gave Zeljka some breathing space as she tried to determine whether she could get to the shaman.

Taking a look at the approaching storm, Nsizi knew they didn't have long. She really didn't want to get stuck out here if the Island Town started flooding.

"Friend Oz! Please, check out those bodies, and see if you can find any clues. Min, Buffi, help me. Let us pile things here, try to make it stronger. In ten minutes, no matter what, we go back to Stone Hall. Yes?"

Looking a bit helplessly at the rising waters, he spoke, "Spirits, guide me, help me know what to do."

Casting guidance

knowledge engineering barricades: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

Grabbing what they could find - loose sandbags, rocks, bits of rubble lying around - she started to shore the gaps and brace the structure as best she could. Meanwhile, Oz ran from body to body, checking pockets, taking jewelry, and taking a good look at the heads. are they halfling?

The ten minutes went to quickly, but Nsizi thought it was too risky to stay put. Screaming into the wind, she said, "We should go!"

All for running away now.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Now that combat was over, Zeljka could see the predicament they were in. She could see that the barricades needed fixing and she waited for some direction from the others. As Nsizi and Min started to point at places that needed to be strengthened, the half-Orc did the heavy lifting to make sure everything was as reinforced and secure as they could make it without additional help.

Is it possible for Zeljka to carry the shaman back with them? She wants to get a better look at him and also wants the sheriff to get a look at him as well as the heads. If they're human or other, maybe someone in Stone Hall will recognize them. If she can't carry the shaman, she'll take the heads.

Glancing anxiously at the sky and sea, Min summoned Hepzibah. "Hep, help us move things onto the barricade! Many hands make light work." she shouted. "Here, this first!" With the help of her unseen servant, she aided Zeljka in strengthening the makeshift sea wall.

male

Fell free to embellish but here's some info:

- the heads are human (you've seen headless bodies not too long ago);
- you may carry the shaman back if you wish;
- loot is brooch of shielding (not yet identified), wand of cure moderate wounds (8 charges), mwk leather armor, and other 'common' gear

I'll pick up once you get back to Stone Hall unless you tell me otherwise.

- So let me get this straight....despite us asking repeatedly if the heads were there, and despite our description of burying them and matching heads to bodies, are you now telling us that these are the heads from the fort? OR, is it just the same MO?"

I didn't say these were the heads from the fort. I said that these are human heads and that you have seen headless bodies before. The rest is your speculation/investigation.

Remember that the colony is made up of the 'town proper' and outlying farms...

You can't rage. You're mixing your PCs. :)

Well, one of the heads sort of looked like one of the Witterwil's boys, but it's really hard to tell.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka would ignore your 'rules' and make her own class. She wouldn't be happy...

Not at all confidant that they'd successfully repaired the barricade, Nsizi felt that they had no choice but to head back to the stone hall. They had to tell the Bosi about what happened here, and if they didn't leave soon, they might not make it back at all.

She watched as Zeljka heaved the shaman's body up over he shoulders. Decapitated heads rattled around like the fetishes on her neswambi. One of the heads looked almost....no...she wouldn't think like that. Better to get back inside, into the light, to be sure.

Oz's pockets bulging, he nodded that he was done. Together they headed back to the Stone Hall

Turn 048 - Waiting Out the Storm.

Read the OOC.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Action 1:

Zeljka dumped the shaman's body on the ground unceremoniously. She gave it a kick for good measure. Part of her wanted to investigate the severed heads that it wore around its waist but she was exhausted. She couldn't believe that she had fought an ogre, water creatures, and lizardfolk all in one day. She was tired and needed some sleep. "We can look at that," she nudged the shaman with her boot, "tomorrow. I need some sleep and maybe something to eat or I'm going to be useless to everyone."

Even though Stone Hall was quite noisy and chaotic, the half-Orc found a corner and was soon sound asleep despite everything going around her.

Action 2:

When Zeljka woke the next morning and had the benefit of daylight, her first order of business was to deal with the shaman's body - more specifically the heads. Had they missed some victims from the Fort?. She made sure that the sheriff was present to help identify those that the lizard shaman had killed.

Can the sheriff identify all the heads? Assuming that what Zeljka learns doesn't change her actions, she'll go to the smithy next.

Zeljka was pretty sure she had knocked her falchion blade while fighting the ogre but hadn't had an opportunity to go to the smithy to have it fixed. "I need to go to the smithy to see about my weapon. It's been damaged. Does anyone else need to go as well?

Tag everyone
Does Zeljka know that they get a MW weapon?

Inside the stone hall, Nsizi first thought to check on Amal. After looking around the hall and not seeing him, she headed to the kitchen. Inside, she found the cook who'd been working with him earlier.

"Not to worry, love, your friend is fine." She beckoned the Bas'o over, and opened the door to a storage cupboard a crack. Amal was asleep, curled up on the sacks of flour.

Bowing her head to the cook, Nsizi said, "Many thanks for your kindness."

Her next order of business was to return the borrowed jacket - wetter, but no worse for wear. She then returned upstairs to find her neswambi. There was no answer when she knocked on Annabella's door, so she opened it cautiously. The half-elf priestess was asleep, with several other forms lying on the floor. The neswambi had been hung to dry, and was only slightly damp. Nsizi gathered it up, then wrapped it around herself and found a spot on the floor. Within moments she was asleep.

The next morning, Nsizi awoke before anybody else. Despite his late night, he felt refreshed and back to his old self. Taking care to be quiet, he shed the borrowed tunic and re-wrapped the neswambi. It was not a quick process, and he was careful to replace straps in the exact precise way to ensure that it wouldn't come apart later.

Coming downstairs, he found Zeljka (and ??) awake. Joining her/them at a table, he ordered breakfast.

Action 2

"I'll come too," Nsizi said.

Fabian, I'm going to echo Shari and ask what's the setup for getting MW stuff. Can we roleplay that this morning?

male

Yes, you can roleplay ordering your MW item this morning. It was the reward for returning the box of weapons from the fort. The taciturn half elf Vethorn Valgardson, originally from the up north (Land of Linnorm Kings) is the local smithy.

Min and Oz also get one MW item.

BTW, word got around of all the help you provided so everyone is generally well disposed towards you.

The sheriff sighed; it had been a really long night. With the body left outside, the heads had deteriorated in the soggy conditions.

Adaela looked at the three heads and frowned, "I'm afraid I do recognize two of those heads. The two adults seem to be people that work... worked in my cousin's dika plantation. I also need to check on him."

He inspected the younger boy's head and shrugged, "I'm afraid I don't know who this head belongs to."

Female half-orc Slayer/7

How many heads were there? Just the 3 or only 3 that are somewhat recognizable?

Zeljka looked at the heads as well with the sheriff and hoped that Adaela would either confirm or deny the half-orc's suspicions. When the sheriff didn't recognize the younger boy's head, Zeljka was relieved. Although there was a part of her that couldn't shake the feeling that she should check on the Witterwils.

perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23. Does Zeljka recognize the head now that it's daylight?

Action 1

Min did her best to find a corner that wasn't full of people, children, or damp belongings, thinking longingly of Count Narsus's manor. Even with the staff and groundskeepers sheltering there, she was sure there was more room than here, where an entire town was crowded into a single inn. Eventually, she managed to fall into a fitful sleep, despite the conditions and the noise of the storm, being utterly exhausted by the day's labors.

Action 2

Exchanging message for detect magic and hold portal for grease when she learns spells for the day.

The bedraggled Min perked up at the mention of a meeting with Count Narsus and tried not to get too far from Adaela over the course of the morning, hoping to be included.

Now that she has detect magic learned, Min will attempt to identify the pearl from the cat's collar.

No, only that it's from a teen age boy.

Zeljka was relieved that she didn't recognize the head in the daylight. She would still check on the family that had been kind to her and offered her the promise of a new home, but for now there were more pressing matters. Her notched blade had her concerned and she would go to the smithy.

After the sheriff identified the two decapitated heads, Nsizi helped to roll the body up in a cloth and out of the way. He hoped that the sheriff would ask somebody else to bury it.

As they made their way to the smithy, Nsizi said, "I am sorry that so many have been killed by the mjusi. But I admit, I felt relief not to recognize that boy. For a moment, last night, I thought it was the eldest boy from the farm. I do not wish that family to come to harm."

Zeljka nodded at Nsizi. "I had the same fears. I had to make sure of it this morning which is why I got the sheriff to look. The Witterwils have been kind to me and I don't think I could handle more loss, this soon."

Nsizi's brow wrinkled in concern. "More loss? What has happened to you, Bufi? Why are you sad?"

Female half-orc Slayer/7

There was no way that Zeljka was going to get emotional in front of people that she had just met. Sure they had been through a lot together in a short time but no one wanted to see a half-Orc get weepy. Therefore she decided to be blunt and try to take the emotion out of it. In a wooden voice, with a mixture of sadness and bitterness, she said, "My mate and two sons were slaughtered by someone who believed himself to be a brave hero."

Nsizi immediately felt hot tears in his eyes, which threatened to spill out down his cheeks. Around the sudden lump in his throat, he said, "I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your family. Losing your children...I can imagine nothing worse." He wanted nothing more than to give her a hug, but sensed that the physical contact would not be welcome.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

"If there is something worse, I never want to experience it.". Zeljka could sense that she was on the verge of slipping into a sadness that would be hard to crawl out of so she focused on the present. "However, they have been avenged and it has brought me here. I plan to start over and work hard." What she didn't say was that if she worked hard enough that she wouldn't have time to think about everything she had lost.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

They soon arrived at the smithy and Zeljka sought out Vethorn. "Vethorn, we didn't have much of a chance to speak when we dropped the Fort weapons off before. We're you able to weather the storm well?"

Tag Vethorn

Did he already get our choice of MW weapon to make or is this when we make the arrangements with him?

Min slipped the pearl of power into her belt pouch, then looked around the crowded room for Zeljka. Not seeing either her or Nsizi, she put the brooch in her pocket to give to the half-orc later ... and demonstrate its use. "I hope they get back before the Count convenes his meeting," she mused.

Where did we pick up the brooch of shielding?

Just as well she couldn't cast a magic missile, then. If she'd had her Arcane Bond available, she would definitely have done so to try to break his concentration while casting. :)
