Yes, I understood that but you are well aware that those actions would take more than one round to do.

Like I said, no issues this time but we'll keep a close watch in the future.

"Is that sufficient Nsizi? You do not look well, poison perhaps? I think so. If that is the case, I cannot help you quickly, rest is needed to recover, and I may be able to speed recovery then, but this does not seem the time or place..."

Feeling much improved, though still weak, Nsizi nodded his head. "Many thanks, Kuhani Akosua. Your spirits are strong, and I feel much better." He wobbled when he stood, but leaned on his iwisa and was able to keep his feet. "Yes, rest is needed, when we are safe. But now we must discover what happened here."

Skirting the remains of the compys, Nsizi limped towards the corral, leaning heavily on his iwisa. His folded and wrapped clothes dripped blood on the mud as he moved towards the grisly scene.

Akosua wrote:
"You do not look well, poison perhaps?"

"Yes, compys have a poisonous bite," Min informed Akosua, moving over to where she was taking charge of the situation. "It weakens their prey so that they can consume it alive. Sorry," she mumbled to Nsizi, apologizing for the graphic description. "It's unusual for them to scavenge, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers. One things for sure: it wasn't a pack of compys that battered down that door."

"The first thing we should do is find a safe place for Nsizi to rest. This is a fort; there should be a barracks for at least four men, assuming they slept in shifts. There may even be an infirmary that may have medicine or some sort of antidote, if it hasn't been looted. But we can't stay out here. More of the neighborhood fauna may wander in at any moment."

"Also," she took a moment to overcome her queasiness, "we need to find someplace to put the dead soldiers until we can bury them. They're only going to attract more scavengers."

"The gate was rigged to collapse. We need to examine these doors carefully before we enter."

I vote we try the open door first, then move on to the closed ones.

Can Zeljka harvest some of the poison front one of the dinos? If so, how much time is she looking at? I'm assuming if the poil on is in its bite that it comes through teeth similar to snakes. Was thinking she could extract that way.

Uh.. I dunno. :)

Let me look into this and get back to you.

Fellow GMs/players, wanna point me in the right direction of where to look...

Making poisons requires craft alchemy and follows the standard craft rules meaning it is not really viable in play without the alchemists swift alchemy and poison use abilities. Zelkja is highly likely to poison herself and it would take weeks by the craft rules - which are rubbish. I sometime allow players to dose a weapon and allow it to last 1d10 x 10 minutes, if they can make a heal check to identify the poison sac - this prevents them being able to sell the poison or save it - generally only for medium or larger creatures though, and very much a house rule. My reasoning is that poisons are rather over priced and can wreak havoc on wealth per level if sold, or if saved for the perfect for. Characters without the poison use ability would also risk poisoning themselves while doing this of course. Not a rule I use any more either because at higher levels it is probably a bit too good for a freebie ability.

The old female cleric from Abadar normally uses younger acolytes to run errands for the church.

She hadn't mentioned her missing because maybe she thought she was still coming back and was within her normal schedule. or maybe the GM forgot to mention that little side quest. :)

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka won't poison herself because of her harvester trait (otherwise I wouldn't have asked) and I figured nothing had to be crafted because it just poisoned Nsizi in its native state.

I'm afraid that is not the case by the normal rules, poison is so expensive that if you are just allowed to extract it from creatures it has a good chance of breaking wealth per level. My rational is that poison needs to be prepared to coat a weapon. The list in the poison use rules includes many poisons that would be extracted from creatures so they did not just forget about those. Looking at other poisons this one would likely be valued at around 200gp per dose, once you extrapolate that over every spider, demon, etc., it can add up very quickly.

A reasonable compromise might be to let PCs have the crafting cost for free if they can extract the poison, but sadly the crafting rules are so terrible for anything over a few gp it would take weeks by the book.

Action 1

Min looked the bodies over with eyes squeezed half-shut and a hand covering her nose and mouth, looking for jewelry or distinguishing features that might be useful in identifying the dead. These people undoubtedly had family or friends back in Pridon's Hearth who would want to know their fate and where they were buried.

"I don't suppose there's any way to tell how long they've been dead?" she asked skeptically.

Action 2

"We ought to drag what's left of these poor animals out of the fort. They'll only attract more scavengers."

Action 3

Min cast a dancing lights spell and directed the glowing spheres slowly down the shaft to see if anything may have fouled the water source.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

I'm assuming that heal checks can be made untrained for this as well? If not, ignore my rolls. I don't have high hopes anyways...

Action 1:
heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

The smell was horrible but nothing that Zeljka hadn't experienced before. She'd seen numerous dead animals before, some just slain and left by humans in the forest. "Will people at Pridon's Hearth want us to bring the bodies back with us? Maybe we will find a wagon somewhere in the Fort."

Action 2:
heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Min wrote:
"We ought to drag what's left of these poor animals out of the fort. They'll only attract more scavengers."

"Burying them would be better. But I would suggest clearing the rest of the Fort first and doing it all at once."

Akosua advanced upon the corpses and bent over to examine them in detail, but in truth she had little experience in dealing with the dead - those corpses she had encountered generally having all too explicable causes of death and being swiftly delivered to the sea - and could make out nothing of use.

"I doubt we would find beasts of burden for a cart here - alive at leat. I suggest we take a few mementos for their loved ones and let the animals pick their bones clean, it is not a desecration only nature. A corpse is only an empty vessel, they have gone to their gods. Though if we find a place to rest and you are determined perhaps you can bury them while I try to tend to Nsizi."

Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

POISON USE
Let's have Zelkja get the slayer talent 'poison use' and then I'll see about facilitating that. However, PF is not a good system for poison use.

HEAL CHECKS
They may attempted untrained if it makes sense for your PC to have at least passing knowledge about healing.

ZELKJA FIRST HEAL CHECK: nothing

ZELKJA SECOND HEAL CHECK: The fatal injuries were caused by claw wounds, roughly the size of a humanoid hand, and the most useful chunks of meat were cut free with a knife. Bites from the dinosaurs roaming the courtyard are more recent.

MIN'S DANCING LIGHTS: The well is 30' deep and seems to contain some glittering coins, a bandolier with what seems like potion vials, and some sort of weapon.

"It looks like there are some potions down the well!" Min called, with a glance at the weakened Nsizi. "But it's a long way down there. Does anyone have any ideas how we could get them out? Maybe we could find some rope."

Let's just forget it. It sounds like more trouble than it's worth. I just figured the trapper in her would want to salvage everything she could from the animals killed - skin, meat, poison. She's not thinking of using the poison, only collecting it. I think the trapfinding slayer talent makes more sense for Zeljka when she levels.

OOC: you snag a torn bandolier containing two cracked potion vials and a single intact potion of cure light wounds.

The weapon and coins are not retrievable with the 'hook'.

Action 2 continued:

Zeljka took a look at the slaughtered animals in the corral. She recognized claw marks when she saw them but these didn't seem to be made by an animal - they were more humanoid. "Whatever killed these animals isn't halfling or one of these dinosaurs. The best meat has also been cut away which suggests it's smart. We'll have to keep looking to find out who is really responsible."

knowledge local spear: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
heal action 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
knowledge local knife: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Nsizi knelt carefully by the human corpses to examine them. Running a hand over the spear, he realized it was halfling size. Closing his eyes a moment, he thought back to the Stone Hall, where several weapons had been displayed on the walls. Yes, this is just like the one I saw there.

"I am fairly certain that this spear came from the local vidogo tribe - they are called the Song'a...no...the Song'o. I wonder - have they been hostile here before?" He realized that one of the bodies was a woman. "This one here, she bears the same symbol that the Kuhani at the banking temple wore." Other than that, there was little that Nsizi could tell from the bodies.

Which one was speared? Does the other look like a militia type?

As Akosua patiently jigged for treasure, Nsizi examined the knife that had been left in the well's bucket. That too he recognized - also a Song'o weapon. Wrapping it in a fold of his neswambi, he said, "It would certainly seem that the vidogo were involved here. But not only them," he added, eyeing the damage to the animals.

Can you take ten/twenty on a heal check? Could I retake it after casting guidance to see if that helps? I want to figure out if they were both speared, if they were killed the same time as the animals, and whatever else I can determine.

vidogo=halfling

The militia type was the one speared.

The dagger in the bucket is a small masterwork item used by the Song'o tribe.

You can take 10 on a heal check but not 20. Something you can't figure out no matter how long you take.

I intend to move this along later today.

Alleria: hopefully you're just busy with life and will get back to the game momentarily but I thought I just check...

After looking at the well-made dagger, Nsizi limped back to the bodies. There was something bothering him...

"Spirits, guide me," he invoked, feeling immediately a little more clear-headed.

Casting guidance. If I'm not allowed to just retake that roll, then I'll take ten on the heal check to give me a 16.

Guidance is fine.

This would be your heal check 2 and it confirms what Zelkja found out (The fatal injuries were caused by claw wounds, roughly the size of a humanoid hand, and the most useful chunks of meat were cut free with a knife. Bites from the dinosaurs roaming the courtyard are more recent.).

No one has yet made the 'heal check 1'.

I'm confused, I thought that was heal check 1 - the bodies of the people. I thought check 2 was the animals. Nsizi was only interested in examining the people.

My husband surprised me with a theme park trip yesterday - left at 7 am and didn't get back until midnight. Very enjoyable, but not terribly conducive to posting, and I got back to find twenty-plus posts in two different games and a bunch in others in the thirty-six hours I'd been offline. :)

Action 1

Heal (untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

Alleria had grown up on board a pirate ship - violence and grisly injuries had been a part of her life from the first. The ship's doctor was usually the one responsible for actually taking care of the cuts, infections, and amputations, but Alleria'd been foisted off on them enough times, when she'd been particularly troublesome. Maybe I should have paid a little more attention...wait!

"This one's wearing an Abadaran symbol! Not many wearing that around her - she's got to be working with that Banker we saw. But...I think you're right, Akosua. Burying them's going to take too long, and it looks like we've got bigger things to deal with here. You said these were Song'o weapons, Nsizi? If that's the case, that means they've been here...even if they weren't responsible for the initial attack, they definitely came poking around. I'd say seeing about them's our next step, once we're finished here." Tag everyone.

Action 2

"Wait...so they were killed by claws...but the good parts of the meat were cut away? So, that means these Song'o have to be using beasts to help them - their pets did the killing, then the masters did the butchering. It's the only thing that makes any sense...right?" Tag everyone.

Action 3

Watching the bandolier come up, Alleria peers down into the well, seeing the weapon and coins still at the bottom. There was only one thing to do... "Lower me in. We need all the information we can get, and that stuff down in the water is information. If something goes wrong, I...I climbed a lot of trees as a kid. I'm still a fair hand at climbing - I can get myself out."

Bluff: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Look at the turn recap.

The bodies of the people was heal action 1 (for which you got a 6 in your initial post to this turn).

Heal action 2 was for the animals and both you and Zelkja made that check.

Am I making this clear or just confusing everyone?

I think Nsizi was meaning the second Heal check he made as a re-try of the first. That's where the confusion's arising from.

Oh, I see now.

You can't reroll a heal check, even with guidance and you can't take 10 on a skill for which you rolled for so, unfortunately, no one has yet made heal check 1 (including Alleria).

Don't sweat it. It won't break or make the investigation.

There are more clues out there.

I'll try to provide at least two investigation locations so we move this along instead of stopping after every one.

We'll of course stop if someone tries to kill/eat/harm you. :)

Heal check 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 LOL not Akosuas' strong suit apparently!

I note both Alleria and Zelkja seem to have rope.

"I do not like to seem callous, but does anyone have any ideas for retrieving these items from the well? They may provide a clue, and I have few objections to wealth - in moderation."

Having listened to the others observations on the claws she asked, "If these claw marks are small I would guess they belong to the halflings. There are many paths to corruption which twist the body, and I recall hearing these Song'o are cannibals..."

No time to bury the people: we should just leave them to rot ... but we should bury the animals! Min shook her head at the conflicting advice of the rest of the party. Well, if anything else wants to eat what's left of the goatmeat and pork, they can do it outside the gates. While the others were busying themselves with getting Alleria up and down the well, Min gingerly grasped a cloven hoof, breathing a thankful prayer to Nethys for her thick gloves, and began to drag the animal carcasses outside the fort, trying desperately not to think of fatty, undercooked ham.

Any chance she can locate a shovel in the courtyard area without entering anywhere unexplored?

Action 1
Nsizi looked at the strange weapon, swinging it in his hand to test the balance. Again, he thought back to the weapons wall at the Stone Hall, and recognized it. "This is called terbutje. The mjusi use it." Seeing the look of confusion on the other's faces, he struggled to find the right word. "The men, with green skin," he looked at Zeljka and shook his head, "no, not skin, small hard skins? Like snake, but with legs?"

"Lizardfolk?" supplied the half-orc.

The thin man nodded, repeating, "Yes, lizardfolk. They use this. They have claw hands, yes?"

Action 2
Looking at the scene of destruction, Nsizi tried to piece together what they'd learned so far. Examining the spears, he said, "I believe these are more vidogo spears. The Song'o fought here too. But where are the dead?" Shaking his head, he said, "This mystery gets more misty."

He glanced at the portrait, then the map. The man didn't look familiar. The map was interesting, but Nsizi had a hard time making sense of it. The Bas'o didn't use maps - their knowledge of the savannah was passed down through imagery and story, not through flat representations on paper.

Akosua's brow wrinkled in thought as she considered the implications, "Could one tribe be trying to set Pridon's Hearth against the other? No, this does not make sense... But maybe? Min carefully leaned the shovel against the palisade and gave it a nod of promise after removing the dead animals from the courtyard.

No intent to use it right away, but she wants to know where it is if they prove to have some non-exploring/non-combat time later on. Any tablecloths in the trashed mess hall we could use to cover the dead? If not, she'll look to use blankets when we get to the barracks.
