When Nsizi approached her face tightened and she frowned, until she processed his words, "I did not mention a sickness as such, but such a thing could be what I am looking for. I speak with the animals and they have told me that someone is perverting my faith, causing a sickness would be a perversion, though I cannot see what its purpose might be. Perhaps we should speak with this Heri and see if our interests align, besides I should like to help if I can illness can be a terrible thing, especially when it afflicts the young ones."

Nsizi nodded. "Yes, I would take all the help I can. My thanks." He bowed his head to her in respect.

I've been thinking of the best way to include definitions for the Mwangi words he's using (which are a mix of Swahili, Xhosa and Zulu). How about if I include the definition of any new words as an ooc in the post, and I'll put a comprehensive list in his character profile. And don't worry, I don't plan on using so many as to make the dialogue incomprehensible. Hopefully. If anybody feels it's getting out of hand, please let me know.

iwisa - his staff/club with the bulbous end (no way to make that not sound dirty)
winkte - two spirit person
neswambi - garment of many layers of fabric, held with belts and straps
bibi - Mistress/Ma'am
kuhani - priestess/healer
bosi - boss/leader

Oh, don't get me wrong; I think it's a wonderful RP touch. :)

I think your idea is fine. Put any new words in a brief ooc phrase and keep a running tab in your PC profile.

Frustrated Akosua exhaled loudly, "You must judge and I must judge, and they must judge and some of us will be wrong, but the world can never be perfect. Thinking in absolutes is, usually, foolish. And grief does not excuse assaulting a man, I have lost those I cherish, but were I to lash out I would still be responsible. Grief is a burden not an excuse."

As they move to the stone hall, assuming that everybody introduced themselves to the sheriff. These can be put in any order that makes sense.

Nsizi found himself walking beside the towering half-orc, though her long strides would quickly take her past him. Curious about the grey-skinned woman, he spoke up. "Greetings and well-met, Bibi Ibamba. The Bas'o have many Ibamba allies in villages near the edge of our savannah. Have you travelled far? Perhaps I have met some of your tribe."

tag Zeljka

Ibamba - orc/half-orc (literally "of the tusk")

The mgeni man was nearly as tall as the Ibamba, and sported a moustache that Nsizi desperately envied. He could talk, dress and act like a man, but facial hair was forever beyond him. Well, aside from that experiment with the antelope hair and the leather-adhesive, but he didn't like to think about that.

Finding himself a little in awe of the gun-touting mgeni, Nsizi struggled to find something to say. Remembering the altercation on the dock, he asked, "What is the meaning of tosspot? We have no such word in the Bas'o."

tag Marc

mgeni = Bas'o word for the Chelaxi (foreigner)

Marc - can you post something on the gameplay page (then delete it). We can't find you on the player or character pages until you do. Thanks!

Alleria’s comment about talking monkeys won a rare rumbling from Zeljka that one may think was akin to laughter had it lasted longer.

The half-orc wasn’t surprised that there had been a poor welcoming once they landed in Pridon’s Hearth. What did surprise her was that the noble had experienced the brunt of the trouble and not herself.

When Adaela asked of their intent, Zeljka answered simply, ”I’m here because you need able bodies. I’m a trapper but I also have experience with farming. I’m ready to work hard for this community. Is there anyone already doing this work who would be needing help?”

Zeljka had started her walk towards the Stone Hall once directed by the sheriff. They were barely off the boat and there had been so many words, so many opinions. Personally, she preferred actions to words but knew not everyone was the same. She had been focused on her thoughts when she heard a voice addressing her. Looking down she saw that this newcomer had a slight limp and so she slowed her pace a little . Zeljka knew he was speaking common but wasn’t familiar with some of the words used. Deciding from the man’s tone that there were no insults implied, she asked, ”Ibamba?” Once explained she answered, ”I have travelled far but from the north. I never belonged to a tribe. I had a family once, but no tribe. Nice to hear you know of half-orcs as allies. Not everyone has a good opinion of my kind. Name’s Zeljka. And you are?”

Tag Nsizi

”Did you say that your children are sick?” Grief flashed across Zeljka’s face as she thought about her boys. There was a hitch in her deep voice when she continued, ”If I can do anything to help you, I will. Children are precious and must be protected.”

Beggars can't be choosers and in reality, the sheriff had no prejudice towards half-orcs. As long as they are civil.

"A trapper? Eh? And a farmer? Well, there are those that trap animals in the jungle and in the coastal areas. Plenty of fishermen too."

She then cautioned, "Be careful though, there are some nasty critters out there. The walls keep most of them out but they're out there. Sometimes, I feel sorry for those that have farmlands outside the colony. Like my cousin."

She ended, "We can sure use able-bodied women 'round here so if you behave, you'll have no trouble finding someone who could your skills. Or maybe set up shop yourself, eh?"

Nsizi nodded his nearly-shaved head in thanks. "Not my personal children, but the children of my tribe. Sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews. Indeed, the sleeping sickness is stealing the treasure most important to the Bas'o. It is my hope to find a cure here."

As the conversation turned to grief as a justification for nastiness, Alleria's light smile began to fall into a carefully neutral mask. "We've all got dead people," she added to Akosua's remark, browbeating her features into submission, "or we will someday. May feel like the world's ending, but it doesn't - he's got to learn that sooner than anything. She didn't have a choice of whether her life ended; he does."

With the sheriff

Listening to the stories from Akosua and Minercuria (who she'd already met) and the half-orc woman, Mwangi man, and Chelish man (who she hadn't), Alleria nodded before chiming in herself. "Afraid my reasons aren't quite so altruistic as saving sick kids or rooting out corrupted faiths. I heard stories of gold in them there hills - but it's the already-minted kind I had in mind," Alleria replied to the sheriff's query. "I figured a colony on the fringes of the Mwangi Jungle was in need of one thing - defence, and I happen to be an expert in firearms. So I came to set up shop, and lend a hand as may be needed to help get this place off the ground. Good for business, right?"

En route to the Stone Hall

"Job? What kind of job?" Alleria replied. But the overworked sheriff was already retreating, and this Stone Hall sounded like as good a place as any to get settled in. She fell into step with the others, trudging toward the mainland and feeling the weight of her heavy pack. To try and distract herself, she turned to the Mwangi man and the half-orc woman beside her, letting their conversation die down a bit before she jumped in. "What do you make of this job the sheriff says she's got for us? I know I've got plans in mind, but having a way to get started pulling ourselves up doesn't seem so bad, eh? And if it takes us out into the jungle, maybe you'll happen across that cure you were looking for...it was Nsizi, right? And Zeljka?" Tag, who else? Nsizi and Zeljka.

The thought had never occurred to Zeljka that she wouldn't have to work for someone else. "Maybe. If allowed, I would."

The half-orc nodded at the gunslinger. "I plan to make this my home. If there's a job to help the sheriff and show my intentions then I'm in." Zeljka had seen a few firearms during her time on the ships but had never seen them used. "You said you were an expert in firearms. Does that mean you also hunt or what do you do with them?"

Nsizi thought of the woman's words, and realized it was true. Finding a cure might not be so easy as locating the correct apothecary. He may need to travel into the jungle, and if he did, having companions would be necessary.

Turning his attention back to the conversation, he said, "We do not use such kelele-silahas among the Bas'o. A thrown spear will never fail, nor blow fire at the holder. I have seen the scars of such things, and would fear to use such a silaha. You must have great courage, and great skill." He nodded respectfully to her.

Some of us are staying, some passing through. Rooms may be needed, but perhaps we must speak to Bibi Praet before making plans?" He looked at the others for confirmation. Alleria nodded along with Nsizi's words. "The sheriff was asking something of us - she seemed pretty excited to have some new bodies around, and I'm not going to say no to the chance to earn some more coin. But if her work's not gonna keep us away from here, or once we're back from it, I'll be needing a place for a little bit. Hoping it's not a long-term deal, but homes and workshops don't build themselves, and I didn't have anyone coming ahead to ease my way. A meal sounds great, for certain, and some of that plum wine doesn't sound half-bad either. I've got a bad taste I need to wash out of my mouth," she finished with a wink at Nsizi. She'd grown up on board ships and still emptied her gut more than once - if this Mwangi man had had even half the trouble she had, he could use it, too.

The journey seemed pretty straight forward to Zeljka. "Has there been trouble in the area? Eight militia members would be hard to overtake."

Nsizi smiled back at her - a bad taste indeed.

It wasn't long before they were seated at a large table with generous portions of hearty fare before them. The plum wine was surprisingly strong, and Nsizi limited himself to a small glass. His lean frame couldn't handle much alcohol, and he didn't intend a repeat performance from his stomach any time soon.

As he ate, he turned to the tall mgeni beside him, who had remained mostly silent since her argument on the docks earlier. "If I may ask, Bibi Mgeni, what has brought you here? Are you also hoping to settle? Are you also a master of the kelele silaha" he stumbled over the common word for it, "the flame-arm?"

I'm confused about what language we're speaking. If polyglot is the native tongue, is that what the Mwangi speak? But we're speaking common together as a group? Could Nsizi speak polyglot to the other Mwangi (Akuosa), and possibly Alleria? Or would the dialects between Zenj and Bonuwat be different?

Action 1

Plum wine! Not the ubiquitous "ale" which could mean anything between honey mead and dishwater laced with rubbing alcohol! Perhaps there were some signs of civilization in Pridon's Hearth after all. Min shook her umbrella as dry as possible as she folded it at the door; between it, her wide-brimmed hat, and the many-pocketed cloak she wore, she had managed to stay reasonably dry during the trek into town from the docks.

"A glass of the wine would be most pleasant, Master Longroad," she replied. "I don't suppose you'd have any preserves? On a bit of toast?"

"Yes, I intend to stay in Pridon's Hearth, though long-term, I'd prefer something a bit more settled than an inn. Would you know if there's anyone in town with a private room to let that I might call on in the coming days?" Three to a room! One might as well be aboard the Kaava Cutter, for peace and quiet.

Nsizi wrote:

"Oh, heavens, no," she demurred. "I never even had a good look at one before yesterday. No, I'm a wizard. But it is my intent to settle in the colony. 'Advance the cause of civilization and bring order and prosperity to all who...' well, something or other. The Banker reads it out at Market's Door. I'm not actually a follower of Abadar -- a bit too much emphasis on profit for my taste -- but I am an admirer of an orderly society." She smiled over her glass of wine.

Action 2

As I suspected, local law enforcement is likely understaffed, underpaid, and overworked, Min thought grimly.

That's twice she's said the road is muddy. Or I suppose that could be its name: the Muddy Road. I wonder if there's a quarry anywhere near here or if paving stones would have to be imported. Something else to speak with the Banker about. Not that the Church of Abadar would pave a road out of the good of its heart, but they might be interested in selling bonds as an investment, she mused.

"If there is trouble, Sheriff," she replied thoughtfully, "what would we be expected to do about it? I trust that the fort wouldn't be under siege by drunken widowers who will be driven away by comic insults," she concluded dryly, with a sidelong glance at Alleria and Akosua.

Nsizi had a hard time following the woman's speech, but he got the general gist of it. And he was delighted to meet one of the dakhwitsi. "A wizard! We have no dakhwitsi in our tribe. It is rare for the Bas'o to leave the tribe to study true hwitsi. Is it as a dakhwitsi that you make your living? How do you..." Nsizi caught himself mid-babble and shut his mouth. Sorry for the delay:
Apologies for taking a while to respond, was hoping to get some sleep and post while well rested, but never quite managed it. My large dog managed to squeeze out of the catflap and run off after a cat barking like a loon at 3am and had to spend half the night - okay an hour and a half - tracking him down, and essentially I have been useless all day.

Akosua followed had followed along contemplating her course, I will have need of allies, so any good will I can gather will not be wasted. The best way to find my quarry is likely by seeking trouble and following it down to the root.

She nodded to the halfling, "A pleasure Jonas - Jonas, Jonas - I will remember. To your questions I am not sure I know the answers yet, may I get back to you later? If there are rooms available later on I may wish one. But for now I will take some of this Plum Wine if I may."

Sitting back sipping her Plum Wine, finding it a little too sweet for her taste, Akosua listened, casting a brief spell to guide her ear. She let the conversation lap over her seeking anything that might leap out while contemplating her new companions as unobtrusively as she could.

Gather Information: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 1 = 14 Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Action 2

Having already decided to accept any task she did not find distasteful Akosua let the others ask their questions taking in and chewing over the responses. Lizardmen, Boggards, and Halflings? Could such creatures be behind the perverted worship of Gozreh? It is not beyond the possible.

"I accept the task," looking to the others at the table she asked, "do any of you have reason to wait? I would prefer to set off today if we may. Perhaps we might visit this halfling healer together once our task is completed Nsizi? I am curious, and have a small skill with herbs, I do not know that I could be of assistance, but I should like to be."

Tag Nsizi, and everyone.

Hearing Min's words Akosua shook her head while scrunching her eyes tightly closed, "Ah, no, no. I am impressed with those who can undertake such studies, but they have always made my head hurt. Teaching is an admirable thing though, even if I was never an able student. But as a former small girl who could not learn the arcane arts, despite much skilled teaching I ask you to remember patience - my schooling was not a pleasant time."

The idea of learning a skill simply to teach it to others, rather than to use it, seemed strange to Nsizi; but then again, he had next to no knowledge of formal schooling. "Politics? That is for making the rules of a place, yes? I am sure that Bibi Praet would be honoured to have the wisdom of the dakhwitzi to help guide her." Looking at the women around him, he felt unexpectedly humbled to be in their presence. "Truly, the Bibi Bosi must have lucky spirits guiding her, to bring you all here. The wisdom of the kuhani and the dakhwitzi, the might of Bibi Ibamba and the weapons of Bibi Alleria...what could she ask of you that you could not handle? I will be most curious to hear her proposal."

The Bas'o stifled a small sigh. He would have preferred to rest for the night. He could also use a proper bath. The muggy heat of the jungle was much different from the dry winds of the savannah, and he found himself wearier than he should be. But he would need friends down here, and these seemed to be good ones. They also seemed eager to be on their way. And perhaps they would encounter these halflings, and ask them about possible cures.

To Akosua, he said, "Yes, Bibi Kuhani, I will be honoured to accept your generous offer of help. And perhaps we will find answers in the south, as well."

Turning to the sheriff, he asked, "Are there beasts for riding here? Or are we to walk?"

Nicely done again. Keep it up.

Turn 006 is up.

Read the OOC.

Questions, comments, and/or suggestions?

Game on!

Just a note that I'm going to be really busy through Friday. I'll try to keep up at least a post a day, but it may not be more than that.

Update from the library: No internet because of water work, and library is closed weekends during school holiday. Sorry about that. I'll post as soon as I'm able, should be a day or two.

"We'll go see to these others that needed errands run to the fort - no reason we can't do as much as possible if we're going anyway," Alleria volunteered. "Maybe we should split up to go see everyone, figure out what it is they need and meet back up at the Stone Hall in a couple of hours? I'll go pay a visit to this smithy - I'd meant to make a call there sooner rather than later anyway." Jonas here might have saltpeter to cure his meats, and the healer will likely have sulfur to treat fungus...long as this smithy carries all the metals I need, I'll be set to keep everything in working order. If not, maybe this Oyin woman can arrange something.

Aside

As they departed the sheriff's office, Alleria pulled Min aside. "Listen...maybe we got off to a bad start. It's just, words are way less lethal than bullets, and if it comes down between insulting an a##@&~& drunk or killing them...well, I'm guessing you wouldn't have been much for option two, either. Bruised egos seemed the better option."

The gunsmith turned to go...then wheeled around again. "No offense, but...why are you here? This ain't a prestigious Chel magic school, or some kind of high-end fancy-dress soiree. You're in the jungle now...politics and academies and prestige don't matter, don't exist. You're on your own here - don't get to skate by on your academy degrees or your family name, and you don't get to hand every problem off to the next step in the chain of command. It's what you do that counts. So be ready to earn a place for yourself...or you'll be back on the Kaava Cutter before you know it."

Tag Min. Meaning no offense here - it's just fun to play out law v. chaos arguments when they come up. :)

Akosua was surprised by the Wizard, Min's, words, having always thought of those drawn to the studious magics as fiercely driven individuals I am viewing things through a veil of my own experience, my kin are hardly typical, and are less bookish than Wizards, I should not be surprised.

"Many of my family are Witches, similar in many ways to Wizards, none make a living by teaching, they are weather weavers on ships, crafters of magical items, or in one case a "Pathfinder" - most are healers to, though I do not think that applies to Wizardy? As for myself I am more concerned with who I am than what I do, the first determines the second I find."

Action 1

The Priestess nodded slowly, "Then perhaps we can visit these places and meet back here for a meal before we set out? It seems visiting Heri can be brought forward for myself and Nsizi, so we may as well steer with the wind. If you, Min, and perhaps Zeljka, are willing to pay a visit to this Oyin Emporium we can speak with all those wishing an errand."

She turned back to the Sheriff and asked, "May we take the coin for expenses now? It seems we might make purchases from the places we will visit and be ready the sooner."

Well, glad to see you're still alive. We'll of course 'save your spot'. No smartphone?

Thanks for letting us know. One post a day is fine.

Adaela smiled and dug into her money pouch and pulled out a... note. "This is currency here in the colony. All merchants accept this writ backed by the Church of Abadar. This is worth 100 gp and there's 300 more gp once you get back with news. Fair?"

So you're splitting up? I presume 2 persons per place? Finalize plans of who's going where and one of those people start the scene.

Min will be happy to go to Oyin Emporium as Akosua suggests. She might try to see the Banker as well, but she knows that Bankers tend to stand on ceremony so she won't be too surprised if a stranger can't get in to see her without an appointment; in that case, she'll try to make an appointment later in the week, after returning from running the Sheriff's errands. IC post dealing with it later, as well as responding to Alleria/Akosua.

Visiting the 'bank' is certainly encouraged, especially if you're going to be spending the 'writ' in more than one place since merchants may not have 'change' to give back to you. The bank can split up that writ into more manageable currency or even give you gp for it.

Zeljka listened to the others split themselves up for various errands.

Akosua wrote:

"If Min doesn't mind my company, I would go to the Oyin Emporium. There may be something there we need for the journey."

Once they were on their way, Min mentioned swinging by the banker. "I would go with you. I plan to stay in Pridon's Hearth so it would be good to speak with them."

tag Min

If Min would rather go alone, Zeljka would tag along with Alleria. I'm good either way.

Akosua nodded examining the writ before placing it on the table, "Enough for me. Perhaps we should all visit the Bank together first to have this split into smaller shares?"

She threw back the last of her wine and rose, the yellow papaya flowers tumbling about her at the sudden motion and stepped back from the table with a nod and smile to the Sheriff.

Fabian, where on the map is the stone hall and the bank? And is the muddy road the one down by #14?

Nsizi was feeling comfortably full after his early lunch, and wanted nothing more than to take a nap. His new companions, however, seemed full of energy and were ready to depart. He followed their lead back outside into the rain. Pulling up a fold of his still-damp neswambi to cover his head, he said, "I need no coin before we set out, but will accompany you all to the bank first if you prefer. Otherwise, I prefer to head straight to see Heri."

Nsizi and Akosua made their way to the halfling's conservatorium. Finding themselves in front of the building, he said, "This must be it." They shook the worst of the water from themselves and entered the building.

Kind of late here so I'll hit my tags tomorrow and answer questions.
If no one has set up the 'scenes', then don't worry as I'll do so tomorrow with the turn recap.

Let's at least try and define who goes where.

Questions?

Game on!

Akosua wrote:

"Many of my family are Witches, similar in many ways to Wizards, none make a living by teaching,"

"Well, no, I wouldn't think so," Min replied. "By my understanding, witches are learners; their powers come from somewhere else and are not theirs to pass on. The effects of various kinds of arcane magic may be similar, but then one might as well say that a storm is similar to a coral reef, in that they both wreck ships."

Bruised egos seemed the better option."

"As a student of history, I've learned that bruised egos have been the source of many of the greatest wars and longest feuds in the history of Golarion." Her mouth twisted in a wry half-smile. "Though I don't disagree that insults are better than injury, I don't concede that those were the only two options at our disposal, not when reason and an appeal to authority had not yet been tried."

Alleria Hawkins wrote:

"I beg to differ," Min replied rather coldly. "This is not the jungle. If it were, you wouldn't be here, as there wouldn't be any profit in selling fire-armaments to the odd explorer who happened by once in a decade. You are very interested in taking advantage of the benefits of civilization, in the form of a town and a dock and a local authority who will back up your right to your own property should someone try to rob you, even as you sneer down your nose at it."

"Every city, every society, was once a little cleared space in the midst of a wilderness, where people got together and agreed that things like politics and education and cooperation were better than war and ignorance and every person looking out for herself. Pridon's Hearth, such as it is, exists because people believe in those ideals and are willing to work together in pursuit of them. No one came here hoping to spend their lives in a poor, disease-ridden scratch in the jungle, where people settle their differences with insults and broken bottles, and I'll not apologize or be told I'm unwelcome because I'm in favor of the colony's safety and prosperity."

OOC apologies if that comes across as too combative. I'm really, really tired and don't have the energy to tweak for nuance tonight.

Akosua pulled a sour face at Minercuria's response, "You would not say such things if you have been forced to spend most of your girlhood studying scrolls, being lectured by an ancient parrot that is smarter than most men and being forced to attempt to commune with every animal that gets within a mile. Learning from a book, or from communing with a familiar seems a small enough distinction, but I never did have a grasp for such things."

The majority of Witches probably match Wizards of equivalent level in spellcraft and knowledge arcana I should think, though it is certainly true a Witch teaching would be a different experience. I figure that Akosua's family basically try to force all of the girls to become Witches through the tutelage of the elder witches parrot familiars, rituals, and the provision and proximity of potential familiars.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

I'm assuming that Min is ok with Zeljka going with to Oyin Emporium for the following post.

Zeljka walked besides the wizard on their way to the Emporium. There had been much discussion with the others and the half-orc wasn't sure that Min would want to talk with her. "I respect you wanting to making the colony a good place. I feel the same way. But you may have to be selfish in order to survive out here. Not that you want to but need to. What would you be willing to do to live?"

On a less contraversial note Zeljka said gruffly, "You said you studied in the north. Where?"

tag Min Or not, I know you're busy

The pair approached the plain wooden building that housed the Oyin Emporium. It was well-kept and barely large enough to hold the many diverse items that Mirya Oyin carried.

Zeljka entered and needed to turn slightly sideways so her shoulders didn't graze the doorjamb. Finding the proprietor of the Emporium, Zeljka was straight-forward with why they were there. "We are leaving for Fort Breakthrough. Sheriff Adaela told us to talk to you before leaving."

The Stone Hall is 12 (shown on Turn 004) and yes the 'muddy road' is by 14.

I'll update the locations you've visited in the campaign page later today.

I'll also update my tags and present new situations later today in the recap.

Unless I hear otherwise, this is what we'll go with:

- everyone to 'bank';
- Akosua and Nsizi to Heri's;
- Min and Zelkja to Emporium; and
- Alleria and Marc to Smithy.

Works for me. If it's not too late I'll get caught up later - busy night last night, dentist's for a mouthful of fillings this morning.

If I don't come back, remember me fondly. When it comes to high-pitched noises and the sensation of grinding against my teeth, I can't even. Just...ugh.
