Into the Rift

Game Master Alazar Do'Urden

Very creative almost open world environment. High money/High Magic Homebrew campaign.

Grand Lodge

Hey looking to start a PBP Rift Campaign. Very "new-player" friendly. For those of you who don't know, a Rift campaign consists of players rolling a character sheet for themselves where the character you play is an on paper representation of yourself. You do not need to roll base stats but they do need to be within reason and believable. You can also choose your own character skills based off of what you can really do and what you really know in real life as well as a number representation also within reason. For example I grew up on a farm so I took Animal Care at a 17 as well as Gardening at a 17. I use two websites for these campaigns, Myth Weavers and The Hypertext d20 SRD. These games are very creative and very open to suggestion but require complete and total honesty and integrity from its players. I never did a campaign like this in PBP so this first time I'm only going to take three people as a trial run. For any questions feel free to post here or to message me personally.

The Exchange

Interesting concept. I wonder if I could claim your whole campaign, inviting two other players personally.

For questions, I'm curious if you require the players to use Myth Weavers? Also, when you say "I took Animal Care at a 17", do you mean 17 ranks, a total +17 modifier, or something else? Also, what level are you targeting? Are characters all assumed to be 1st? And finally, what is the setting? An AP? A homebrew? Low-magic, low-money? High-magic historical?

I'm interested in hearing the answers to D-Kal's questions, assuming you don't just take him and his three friends and close recruitment. :P

Grand Lodge

@D-Kal: For your first question no it is not a requirement to use Myth Weavers. If you have another way to keep track of character progression by all means please use it but as a way to keep track of your characters progression it was a suggestion. I apologize for not specifying but when I say I took Animal Care at 17 I meant ranks not modifier. The skill system is homebrew as well as the campaign with a pre-destined universe but many events are not scripted and rely on percentile for such things as enemy encounters, mission/quest paths, etc. Like I said these kinds of campaigns rely heavily on the imagination, quick thinking, and luck of its players. Yes Characters are an assumed 1st level at the beginning of the campaign but jump quite quickly by the time you get through the "Prologue" so by the time the prologue is complete characters can range anywhere from an assumed 5th to an assumed 10th. There is actually a fair bit of magic involved depending on which parts of this created universe they travel to which will be covered in discussion after recruitment is complete

Grand Lodge

As for recruitment I don't quite wanna close recruitment this early until I can get more input and possible applicants if the concept gets off the ground I may open more player slots to a total of 6 players seeing how this kind of campaign is very open to having this many players in it

The Exchange

Yeah, I don't think this is what we'd be looking for, but thanks for the idea! It sounds very unique.

Grand Lodge

No problem and good luck on your search. I apologize that it doesn't fit what your looking for but feel free to build upon in yourself Rift campaigns are always open for tweaks and adjustments to fit your playing style and the playing styles of your players

couple of questions:
1. In real life, what is the difference between intelligence and wisdom?
2. for mental skills, how to we reflect advanced in one area, but dumb in another. For example, if you know the story of Albert Einstein, he was a genius at Algebra and complicated math, but could not do simple math. A genius like him would have int 18, but he was dumb in some areas, so would that be reflected in knowledge skills? He is trained in skills x, y and z? Or for those of us with high IQs but are handicapped in certain subjects. Excell in certain social situations but fail at others. Well my cha in this situation is a 20 but in this other situation it would be a 12, and when it comes to this it is a 14.

Grand Lodge

These are both good and quite necessary questions. In the real world I suppose Wisdom would be considered the same as Common Sense and seeing how is there is still magic involved these base stats would still come into effect. As for your second question the in question "better subjects" would be reflected as character specific skills. Say Albert Einstein was a character if he chose to do so he could take Algebra or Advanced Mathematics as a skill with a rank of 18 because it is believable but not take a Basic Mathematics skill because he is poor at it. The skill system is very loose and has infinite amounts of skills and options to choose from. Basically if you can think it you can take it but it has to be within reason and believable. Also the max rank you can start is a 20 but you have to give me a real life example to back up why you should get it. It all boils down to integrity and honesty.

Example:
This is an example of the skills I took when I started my Rift Campaign.

Computer Sciences: 16
Computer Engineering: 17
Art: 18
Mechanic: 15
Street Wise: 15
Fishing: 17
Animal Care: 17
First Aid: 18
Hunting: 16
Shooting [Pistol]: 17
Shooting [Rifle]: 17
Gardening: 17
Seduction: 16
Survival: 16
Chemistry: 14
Knowledge [Fantansy World]: 18
Woodsmanship: 17

Like I said completely up to you

Well I guess I'll give this one more week to try and find any interested players if not oh well I suppose

I'm interested in this.

Grand Lodge

Ok cool any questions you might have feel free to ask

I'm interested/intrigued. I do have some questions though.

1) Did I get it right that all we need to do for our character is :

  • make a stat array that would reflect our basic physical and mental abilities in real life
  • select a set of skills that we think would represent our skills in real life and give them ranks according to how good we think we are at it?
Or did I miss something?

2) You say that at our "starting point" we can not have more then 20 ranks in any skill. How high can the amount become later on? I'm just asking to see what a 1 means compared to a 10 or a 20 in a specific skill?

3) Follow-up to 2) I looked at the list of skills in the example that you said was you in a rift campaign you played in yourself. I don't know you, but if 18 in Advanced Mathematics is what Einstein might have (as you stated as an example to DoubleGold) it would make me believe you're some form of super human as you are quite skilled in the skills you have (they average out at 16,5)

4) From what you said, it seems we at some point will be "leveling". What rule system will this game use? From the link you gave it seems to me it would be d20 based? Will we be getting "classes" or will we get special powers/magic/fighting skills/feats/... in another way?

@Theorythmus
Q1.) Did I get it right that all we need to do for our character is :
make a stat array that would reflect our basic physical and mental abilities in real life
select a set of skills that we think would represent our skills in real life and give them ranks according to how good we think we are at it?
A.) Yes that's right on the money.

Q2&3.) You say that at our "starting point" we can not have more then 20 ranks in any skill. How high can the amount become later on? I'm just asking to see what a 1 means compared to a 10 or a 20 in a specific skill?
A.) 1-10 ranks is Below Average, 11-14 is Average, 15-16 is Above Average, 17-18 is Skilled (Typically reserved for things you've done your whole or a majority of your life i.e my 17 in certain skills based of of living on a farm, or life-time hobbies i.e Art, Computer Sciences and Engineering), 19-20+ is Extremely Skilled/Genius Level (Generally reserved for skills that you have trained for in a time span of 2-3 years after High School/College)

Q4.) From what you said, it seems we at some point will be "leveling". What rule system will this game use? From the link you gave it seems to me it would be d20 based? Will we be getting "classes" or will we get special powers/magic/fighting skills/feats/... in another way?
A.) Yes this game is D20 based but like I said in earlier posts very open. XP will be gained from enemy/boss encounters and from quests/missions. Since the game is very open skills/spells/abilities/etc. are gained in a multitude of ways whether it's from skill or spell books bought from a merchant, materia gained in the field of battle (Yes there are multitudes of Final Fantasy references as well as others in this campaign), taking game time to train or learn new skills. There are infinite ways to gain abilities and skills throughout the story but its up to the player to take those opportunities. As for classes once you reach the point of being able to choose your class same rules apply if you can think it you can probably take it but I allow classes from Pathfinder, D&D, Homebrew Classes, even if you want to create your own class you can within reason. "The Rift" is basically moved along by its players ideas actions and imagination, I as the GM am there to make the basis of the story its up to you guys how it fleshes out!

I hope that answers your questions!
