Fortitude 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Caulder stumbles down the length of the table to get into position to heal Pagrip.

Move to the end of the table opposite Ten. (You really need coordinates on your map, Lore.)

Pagrip still reels from the blow, but is somewhat at ease in the knowledge of a newly fortified Caulder coming up behind him - a grim look of determination on his face that may very well be due to his supreme unwillingness to give up the last bit of his meal that he spent good money for.

Esmerelda brings a fat gash into the side of the golem - the layers of decaying flesh offer no resistance to the massive greatsword.

Next up: Ten, Pagrip, golem, Esmerelda, Caulder

I may be going out on a limb here, but it may be related to the spectacularly low Fortitude save that Pagrip has (for a dwarf) ;)

I considered it, but I like it as it is now - it makes the descriptive texts of people's movements a bit more specific.

As Esmerelda cuts the golem, Ten takes the opportunity to strike.

Ten's tentacle harmlessly flops off against the sturdy golem.

Next up: Pagrip, golem, Esmerelda, Caulder, Ten

Pagrip tries to smash the golem again.

Warhammer, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 1 + (5, 3) = 12
Sigh.

AC 16; HP 2/18

Pagrip's luckless attack hits nothing but thin air. Which, perhaps, is fortunate as the golem's attention and preservation instincts move to its right flank. With surprising speed and force the golem slams Esmerelda and Ten against each other. Where the thing touched Ten's cheek a sickly smear of green is mixing with some blood from a bruise.

Slam vs Esmerelda 1d20 ⇒ 16 damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Esmerelda Fort save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 saved

"What is it with you and beards all of a sudden, Darkbane?" he complains, reaching out and cuffing Pagrip on the back of the head with some positive energy. "Hey, dwarf, when you're hurt, have the sense to step away from the thing killing you! You're no good to anyone dead."

convert hold person to cure moderate wounds 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (7, 6) + 3 = 16 Now there's efficient resource management. :)

With an audible click Pagrip stands up dead straight, good as new. For a moment a golden key shimmers in his eyes. And he is granted a +1 circumstance bonus to attack for 1 round.

Esmerelda, on the other hand, has no such luck - her attack carries far more force and competence than Pagrip's had, but against the hide-like exterior of the golem all that means little.

Assuming Ten doesn't destroy the golem first...

Feeling invigorated, Pagrip swings at the golem again.

Warhammer, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 12

"Blast!" he yells.

AC 16; HP 18/18

Human (Varisian) Alchemist 3

Save against Nausea: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

That's enough to beat it! By the way, Ten took a 5-foot step last turn, so I assume the golem had to move too.

Ten takes another step back, giving himself space to attack with his spear.

Spear Thrust 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Spear Damage 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

HP: 5/30 (33); Con 12; AC 17, T 13, F 16, CMD 18, Bombs 2, Extracts still prepared: cure light wounds

Oops, I missed the 5-foot thing. I'll leave it as is, apparently you guys need the help :p

Three attacks from three sources - but only one connects. To Ten's dismay, the spear does not appear to meet quite as much resistance as he was expecting. Damage resistance. The spear is still partly embedded in the creature when it retaliates at the alchemist. The first swipe goes wide, but the second catches Ten off-guard and drops him to the floor, unconscious.

Slam at Ten 1d20 ⇒ 6 miss
Slam at Ten 1d20 ⇒ 14 damage 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Next up: Esmerelda, Caulder, Pagrip, (Ten dying), golem

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

"Ten! Nooooo! Pagrip stand over (on) Ten. Cleric! By Abadars holy gavel, channel!"

Esme 5fts into the corner (the cabinet should be adequately thrown over by now) and readies to attack when flanking occurs.

Still cry shenanigans for an enemy 5fting through a table and Esme to get to Ten. Shenanigans on you GM! :p

"Blast it all!" Pagrip grumbles. "This thing is going to be the death of us." He scrambles onto the table and then jumps down over Ten and then attacks.

cast stabilize on Ten; 5-foot-step northeast

Pagrip really needed Weapon Finesse and a light weapon over Combat Reflexes at level 3.

On command the blood that had been gushing out of Ten stops. His pained features look slightly at ease now.

Esmerelda's readied attack aims nicely at a pivotal part of the golem's body - but it just doesn't carry the force to go through the thick natural armor. Pagrip's attack comes much closer to striking home, but still falls just a bit short. It's enough - however - to get the constructs attention. With an inhuman bellow it reaches for the big table and with a shudder lifts it off the ground. The various odds and ends that were on the table topple and shatter to the ground.

This provokes, giving Pagrip and Esmerelda an AOO - but also causes 1d6 ⇒ 3 damage to Caulder, Pagrip and Ten. Caulder and Pagrip can make a DC 10 Reflex save for half (or none in the case of Evasion). As it is unlikely that the golem will go down from the AOOs, I'll continue with his actions for now:

With the massive table clutched between his hands (leveraged in part against his hips) the mad golem swings at Pagrip. The impact nearly bowls the dwarf over.

The left arm of an dead Shoanti isn't worth anyone's life, even a distiller's." He carefully reaches down, without taking his eye off the monster, and grab's Ten's limp arm. I'll post Pagrip's AOO for now

Just before Pagrip sees stars for a moment, he brings down his warhammer on the golem's approximate right kneecap.

Pagrip warhammer smash! 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24 damage 1d8 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (1, 5) = 11

Next up: Esmerelda, Caulder (acted), Pagrip, Ten (unconscious), golem

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

Esme reverses her grip on the greatsword and stabs it, point down, into the back of the golems left knee.

The dice roller hates Esme. Here is the proof:

Reeling from nearly being knocked over by the table, Pagrip calls out to Esmerelda, "You can't fight it on your own! Get out of there!"

He takes one last swing at the golem.

Warhammer, flanking: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 2 = 19

With a bubbly roar the golem moves after Pagrip, the table almost like a battering ram. Esmerelda gets an AOO. Caulder's resolve is almost shaken as the golem barrels into him, trying to use the table to crush both Caulder and Pagrip against the west wall. Bullrush maneuver, Caulder gets an AOO against the golem if he threatens

Bullrush vs Caulder 1d20 ⇒ 1

The golem's attempt fails abysmally, as a table leg is caught on the floor causing most of the energy to be expended harmlessly. One of the table legs breaks, the other is cracked and hangs skew.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

Can't find any reference to which weapon he has in his hand, but he hasn't done anything that takes two hands since we entered the room so I see no reason why he wouldn't have his morningstar equipped. AoO 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 I always roll max damage on misses. :P

Hate to point it out, Navior, but I think Pagrip took 16 hp of damage here. You sure you want to wait within range for another slam?

Pagrip's AC is 16. That attack hit AC 15. Although maybe it was against CMD, but his CMD is 17, so still unsuccessful. Or am I missing that it was a touch attack?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

I thought he was not including the attack bonus to keep us from metagaming. The raw d20 roll has been under our AC before when he's described it as a hit and made people roll Fort saves. Like here, where the hit that put Ten into negatives is a natural 14 when his AC is 17 or here where Esmerelda takes damage and has to save vs. something on a 16 when her AC is 18. I think anytime he rolls damage, we're suppose to apply it and trust his math. ;)

Ah, hmmm... You may be right. Although he only says it "nearly bowls" Pagrip over.

Lorekeeper, can I make a request that you be much, much clearer when something is a hit or miss? Attempting to do everything with in-game descriptive language is one thing, but it still needs to be clear, especially when looking back to make a quick check. If you haven't been posting the actual ACs hit, then I wouldn't be surprised if there have been times that Pagrip has been hit, but I haven't subtracted the damage. Thanks. :)

At any rate, yeah if he took 16 points of damage, he won't try to goad the golem to follow him, and he won't stop to ready an action. He'll keep moving a full double move in to the room to the west and south towards the stairs (40 ft total).

Female Human (Varsian) Paladin 4

"Abadars moldy vault, Cleric. If we survive this, expect a stiff talking to."

Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 3

"If we survive this, I expect a stiff drink," he growls. "If it follows us, see to the distiller; if it stays with you, I'll see to the dwarf."

Working on the assumption that Pagrip is badly injured, he'll withdraw out the door after him to heal him next round. If Pagrip isn't hurt, he'll withdraw around the still-extant table to the door in the north wall, 5 squares north of Esme on the map.

Joana/Caulder of course rightly point out that Pagrip is indeed bashed up rather badly - and yes I tend to remove the +x part to obfuscate things a little. I'll add a HIT/MISS! type thing to the attacks :)

Pagrip, followed tightly by Caulder, make a swift getaway bustling through the door to the west under a barrage of table legs. The golem doesn't chase, but turns on the isolated paladin now - with a heave that scrapes the table along the ceiling the construct smashes the table at Esmerelda, but providence, Abaddar, or perhaps just plain luck, ensure that the attack misses. The table crashes heavily against the ground just off the mark and a few splinters of wood scatter and skitter along the floor toward the east wall.

Thanks! That'll be very helpful.

Pagrip will delay until after Caulder heals him.

Pagrip pauses long enough for Caulder to catch up to him. "Thanks," he says as the cleric heals him. He looks back the way they came, hoping to see Esme followng with Ten.

He'll continue to delay for now.

AC 16; HP 11/18

Caulder and Pagrip catch their breath in the corridor beyond the fighting room. Esmerelda attacks, cautiously, wary of letting her guard down now that she's facing the golem by herself. The carrion-wrought construct in turn swings the table at the paladin - the attack misses Esmerelda but smashes the table into a couple of larger and many smaller pieces; the golem now holds the remnants in one claw while his other is empty.

When Caulder returns into sight of the room, he sees that the table the golem has been wielding is shattered now, but a remnant - in the left hand of the creature - smashes at Esmerelda with such force and ferocity that it powers its way through the paladin's formidable defense. For a moment it actually looked as if Esmerelda managed to fend of the blow, but her strength was just not enough to hold back the attack.

Did you want us to spoiler our posts before we meet up? There's forty-some minutes left for me to edit, if you did....

Not at all, spoilers are for things you want to hide.

Better now than when you're fighting for your life, right? You've got nowhere to go but up! ;)

I'm assuming that Caulder is no more than a casual acquaintance/co-worker of Esmerlda's and that he's not aware of her backstory with Lamm. He's not the touchy-feely-sharey type. So he assumes that her presence here is just bad luck for him and not connected with the Harrow card invitation at the moment.

Joana wrote:

Yup. I belive casual acquaintance/co-worker is an accurate description. Esmerelda is not forthcoming of the time with Lamm and also attempts to hide the scars that cover her everywhere except face and one arm. In that regard she is a "private person" which some may interpret as being cold or uncaring.

I just realized that Esmerelda, Pagrip and Ten need to specify their languages known. Please update your sheets (add it to the notes or somewhere)

And remember that your racial language is free (so Ten and Esmerelda speak Common and Varisian for free, and Cauldran only gets Common - as Cheliax is a derivative of Taldan, which is just plain Common in the Inner Sea).

They are specified. Twice in fact. Though obviously not in the place you are looking :p

Once under the skills box and once under "hints and reminders".

Hey, what do you know... The best kind of paladin: A blind and deaf one :)

hehe - I was just looking over the character stats, perception doesn't seem to be this party's strong suite. Pagrip has a decent bonus, and I suspect Caulder will put a rank or two into Perception at level 2.

Pagrip will likely continue to boost his Perception every level. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a Wisdom bonus, so it's not as high as it might otherwise be. :)

Was very tempted to add something like

I'm getting a "Your browser doesn't support editing of this drawing" message, despite the fact that IE9 in Vista is listed as supported and that I've set my cookies and Java settings as specified.

The map is awesome. And seems to work perfectly in Firefox.

Great @Avianfoo

Joana... can you try a real browser? ;) IEx claims a lot, but they are in fact quite poor at supporting standards, preferring to make their own standards a lot of the time. (Now you'll tell me that you're a IE developer... ohnoes!)

If all else fails, just let me know where you want to move to, and it'll happen :)

If I was an IE developer, I hope you wouldn't have laughed at me so much for the way I tried to fill in the character sheet on the website. There was a time I was actually near the cutting edge in regard to the internet, but that was 1994.

Changed browsers for you; hope you're happy. ;P

How big are the windows in ye old fishery? could we stuff a scrawny dwarf through one?

A scrawny dwarven infant maybe :P - the windows are relatively small, a child can squeeze through with relatively little trouble; an adult *could* do it, but it's considerably harder.

Just to be sure. Talking is allowed out of initiative order, right?

Yes yes, talking is encouraged. No speeches though :p

Not that it matters as long as the party is split up, but Caulder's delay moved him ahead of Ten in the Initiative line-up.

This is the kind of situation that leads me to believe that the opening encounter of Crimson Throne is the deadliest of any of the published APs. Good luck Caulder! :)

Caulder failed by more than 5, so is he actually underwater and holding his breath now or is the water too shallow here?

Think of Caulder doing a tip-toe in the water, standing on something uncertain, perhaps the remains of some ancient support beam. The water depth here is relatively shallow, but also very varied - in part due to urbanization, and in part due to natural rock formations. This leads to a relatively large diversity of sea-life that calls the craggy seafloor home, but also support a thriving ecology that includes larger predators. Like jigsaw sharks.

Well, better eaten than drowned ... I guess.

Indeed, here's hoping that Pagrip has something that will help. I suspect Ten and Esmerelda will be too busy to come to assist. They're still getting their own set of problems coming their way. :)

Ugh, noted an error on Ten's sheet. He doesn't yet qualify for Power Attack, so I've replaced it with Intimidating Prowess (which was going to be his L3 feat. Hope this won't cause problems - though we might all soon be too dead for it to matter.

That's the spirit.

I hate Swim checks. Unless the PC is specifically built for swimming, it's like saying, "You have a 50% chance of sitting around and doing absolutely nothing this round. Better luck next round." :P
Tell me about it. It's especially bad when the dice roller hates your character. :)

The dice roller hates everyone. Every now and then it throws you a glimmer of hope only to snatch it away again.

Well we did split up the party,
seemed like a good idea at the time.
And it would have worked too...
if it wasn't for those damn kids and their dog.

Don't forget the rotten gangplank. It's evil, too!

Smite! Evil!

Nice. Show that tuna who is boss.

Hopefully it explodes into a crimson cloud of blood, flesh and cartilage. Of course, I guess that will only attract more of them....

That's 14 HP of damage to the shark. How many could it have...?

I'm sure it can't have all that many. After all, it's just a shark. They're like the kittens of the water, right? Right?

I just hope it doesn't have class levels....

No class levels, lucky you :P - also, despite the pretty name, a jigsaw shark is just an ordinary shark. Also known as swimming death. 14 damage is not enough, unfortunately. We'll see what happens to it later :)

I'd ask if it doesn't just want to turn around and swim away, having taken that much damage, but not with blood in the water.... :P

Shark ate gnome. Does this mean the shark is on the side of good? :p
