Franti's weapons lowered, though were not forfeited. Close to the door, he smiled at the woman. "I look like a crusader? Really?" The kobold clown turned his head back to his friends, giving a nod of approval towards the woman inside, though searched their reactions to her request.

"She certainly sounds honest to me. I could not leave Radiance outside unprotected, however. I would be dishonoring the gift of Iomedae, if I let a common thief take it and use it for evil." She turns toward the voice.

"Is there any way we could come to an understanding? I have a blade that I cannot leave unprotected. You seem honest to me, but I can't."

Karas scowled a moment before removing his weapons and placing them on the ground behind him. He motioned the others back.

"As a gesture of goodwill I have laid down my weapons. My companions will step back to a safer distance. Once they have done that will you open the door to speak with us?"

"All right, I'm opening the door," said the woman inside. The door opened in and to the east. A woman wearing leather armor and armed with a longsword in one hand and a bag in the other stepped into the doorway from the west and threw the bag at Karas. Karas and Franti get an AOO, if either has a ready weapon. Franti attacks at -4 due to the cover provided by the door frame. Since Karas laid down his weapon and is not yet raging, I assume he has no ready weapon.

On the Table:

Hits with a tanglefoot bag:
An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed.
DC 15 to avoid stuck to ground: Ref: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Franti's lashed out with his sap as she made her attack and hit her left shoulder. But the bag hit Karas and burst into a tangle of gooey filaments that quickly solidified, sticking to Karas and the ground.

Tanglefoot bag rules:
The successful hit with the tanglefoot bag gives Karas the entangled condition: –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. Since he failed the Reflex save, he cannot move.

A creature that is glued to the floor can break free by making a DC 17 Strength check or by dealing 15 points of damage to the goo with a slashing weapon. A creature trying to scrape goo off itself, or another creature assisting, does not need to make an attack roll; hitting the goo is automatic, after which the creature that hit makes a damage roll to see how much of the goo was scraped off. Once free, the creature can move (including flying) at half speed.

The strength check or the scrape attempt is a standard action.

The goo becomes brittle and fragile after 2d4 rounds, cracking apart and losing its effectiveness. An application of universal solvent to a stuck creature dissolves the alchemical goo immediately.

With the door open, other armed and armored men and women could be seen. Some had bows ready, others had a sword in one hand and something to throw in the other.

I assume those who talked but took no action are effectively delaying, so they can act before or after Avelina. Anyone attempting a ranged attack at the looter in the door takes a -8 penalty: -4 for cover from Karas and -4 for firing into melee. Anyone making a melee attack against her (except Karas) takes a -4 penalty due to cover from the door frame.

"Get behind me, Lady! These scoundrels fight win out honor!" Ellena drew Radiance and double moved to just behind Karas. "Let's take the fight to these traitors, Karas! For the Inheritor!"

When the door opened and the woman threw something, Tauni let loose. She cast a spell, and a stream of glittery particles went from her extended finger to the open door. Once inside, the particles silently blast out into a sphere, coating everyone in the effect with a shiny coating.

Casting glitterdust, targeting it as far inside as she can. I'm trying not to catch Karas with it, but if she can't see to get it far enough back to avoid that, she will still cast it. DC 16 will saves or blinded, plus they all look... festive.

This also ends the Sanctuary effect on Tauni.

Avelina's bright demeanor melted in a moment. More vicious liars and thieves. She silently prayed in thankfulness that she at least had not been the one to get drenched in tanglefoot bag slime.

She thrust out a finger, pointing at the woman in the doorway.

Ellena advanced to back up the entangled Karas and stand before Avelina. Tauni directed an explosion of golden motes into the heart of the looter's inner circle, blinding three forming the second rank. Franti added injury to injury by bopping the woman at the door two more times, leaving her reeling but still fighting. Avelina's sonic assault tipped the scales and the looter collapsed (she made the save but the damage put her negative).

Inside the shop, one of the blinded looters moved away from the door.

Since Anarya's player has indicated a busy RL is limiting posts, I'll bot her to keep things moving.

Anarya ran toward Karas to help him get free from the tanglefoot bag. She did not have an edged weapon that she could use to scrap the gooey stuff so she instead spoke, "Receive the guidance of the inheritor," made a hand gesture symbolizing Iomedae, and touched Karas gently on the shoulder. Cast Guidance on Karas.

As this was happening, the blinded looters ran deeper into the house while others made ranged attacks at the exposed Karas in the doorway. Their shots (2 arrows and a javelin) splintered wood from the door jam but none hit the tiefling.

Karas' eyes flashed as his rage took over and his claws extended. He slashed at the goo on him with fury.

Karas managed to disentangle himself from the strands of the tanglefoot bag and his feet were no longer stuck to the ground. He still had some restrictions on his movement that would remain until the tendrils lost their stickiness, usually less than 1 minute.

Karas is still entangled, but he can now move at half speed. The duration of the tanglefoot bag is 2d4 rounds, so after Karas's next turn, I'll roll to see if it lasts another round or two. The effect was initiated during the action of Looter 4.

Ellena, Tauni, Franti, and Avelina are all up. Anyone who hasn't acted by Monday evening will be 'botted.


Tauni moved up to the door, bringing up her crossbow to support her allies.

Franti darted into the building, scales glittering as Tauni's spell hung in the air. With a quick scan, the fool found his target, one still blinded by the sparkling spell. Dancing across the battlefield, the fool tumbled, crawling on his hands and feet to avoid strikes before jumping to assail his target.

I'm not sure how to moderate Franti's actions. He attacked Looter 1, but Looter 1 is in (7,4) while Franti is 2 to the west and 1 south in square (5,4). He would have to make a ranged attack, but last he attacked he had saps, not a ranged weapon in hand. Also, the only looter who is not blind and who has a readied melee weapon is Looter 5 in square (4,2). Looter 3, 6, and 7 are not blinded, but they attacked with Longbows last round after moving, so they don't have any melee weapons in hand to use in an AOO. I've added notes on the map to show which figures are blinded and what weapons they have readied.

If Franti wanted to attack Looter 1 with saps, he'd have to end in square (6,4) and take a -4 penalty for cover. So save your reroll and don't worry about AOOs and let me know which enemy he attacks and with which weapon. Then reroll the attack and damage.

Ellena's powerful attack cut deeply into the looter opposite the door. He took a near mortal wound and looked horrified at the paladin, fearing for his life.

Avelina grinned with self-satisfaction as the looter in the door crumpled and her Champion charged into the fray. Avelina stepped forward, head raised high as she looked upon the villains.

"You all made the grave mistake of antagonizing the Chosen Servents of the Inheritor!."

She mimed holding a bow and drawing two arrows, holding the pose just long enough for people to get what she was doing. She loosed one "arrow" at Ellena's barely-up target and another at the foe next to him.

Franti dashed into the room and attacked a looter who had just thrown a javelin at Karas. Franti discovered that this fellow was better armored than the others and his sap just thumped into a breastplate underneath his cloak. Avelina finished what Ellena started on one of the looters and dropped him and wounded his partner in archery.

In reply to Avelina's statement, the looter which had been temporarily blinded said, "Then I suppose an offer to split our bag o' loot is out o' the question!" He rushed at Ellena and attacked with his longsword.

On the Table:

His sword swished through empty air.

Anarya sensed that Karas was about to rush into the house, so she touched his shoulder one last time, transferring some divine essence into him. Cast virtue on Karas, giving him 1 temporary hit point.

Reminder to those attacking, you get a +1 on attacks from the bless that Anarya cast earlier.

Bless fills your allies with courage. Each ally gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.

The two blinded looters retreated further, feeling along the walls to get as far away from the battle as they could, rubbing their eyes to clear the glowing motes of light from them.

They still could not see however, so they held their swords ready to defend themselves should they get attacked. Total Defense

Blinded Condition: The creature cannot see. It takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class, loses its Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), and takes a –4 penalty on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks and on opposed Perception skill checks.

The looter Franti had cornered gave him a cruel look of pity and disgust and drew a heavy flail. He swung it and showed the little kobold what a bludgeoning weapon could do. 11 points damage.

Karas stepped into the room, trailing strands of the tanglefoot bag, his features changing as he went into a rage. The looter who just attacked Ellena went wide-eyed at the sight. Karas attacked with his claws and one of these attacks ripped into the man's chest near his neck. 14 points.

Karas attempted a charge at the looter trying to pummel Franti, but the tendrils from the still sticky tanglefoot bag impeded his movement so that he could build up sufficient speed. The strands also threw off his balance and his attempt to lay claws on the man failed as well.

The entangled condition prevents charge, although the die roll being a natural one makes that moot. Also the condition imposes a -2 penalty on attacks.

Ellena: please clarify. Ellena cannot reach either looter with a five foot step. She can move 15 feet west and attack looter #5, who is badly wounded with a potion bottle in one hand and a longsword in the other. Or she can move toward looter 7 just north of Franti and attack him. He is uninjured and is the likely leader of the group, with better armor, a better weapon and a higher BAB, given that he can make two attacks in one round. Which does she want to attack. She can keep her rolls.

Ellena adjusted her grip on her glowing longsword as she moved toward the back of the shop, heading for the uninjured leader of this decimated band of looters. As she reached the wall, she noticed the glowing form of one of the looters who had retreated toward the far corner behind a display wall. He appeared to have cleared the glitter dust from his eyes, so he might make an attack soon.

Ellena swung extra hard at the leader. Iomedae guided her hand and she cut into his shoulder. 14 points.

Spoiler:
There's enough enemies that Anarya might even have trouble selecting them all out of a channel, and it looks like only Franti is injured. On her turn, Anarya will cast cure light wounds while not threatened, and move to heal Franti, delivering the touch spell as a free action when she gets there. She'll avoid AoOs if possible, but trusts in her 19 AC if there's no way they can be avoided.

Tauni stepped into the shop and fired a crossbow bolt at the injured looter who looked about to drink a potion.

The bolt drove its way into his leg. The man flinched but did not collapse, although he looked like he was about to.

Franti dodged and weaved past the leader with the flail and gave him a solid blow with his sap to the man's lower back. The leader grunted, but this wasn't his first melee and he soaked it up and kept fighting.

Avelina marched into the shop, full of self-righteous zeal, drawing her mace in case a looter tried to acost her. Sensing the looter with the potion was at his limit of pain and injury, she moved into the corner, just ten feet away and fired off a cantrip at the man, saying, "Since your heart is so cold, this will make it colder still, or perhaps just still."

Alas, her aim was off and the ray hit a glass vial on a shelf behind the looter, which shattered in a shower of glass and frost.

The man cringed with fear and pain, but gave a weak smile when he saw the crossbow bolt and the frost magic missed him. He took a step away from Franti and Karas and unstoppered the small vial he held onto with fierce intensity. This moment of inattention gave Avelina an opening, which she interpreted as the Inheritor's blessing to dispatch the unrepentant scoundrel.

Avelina's mace smashed into the man's chest but she did not swing hard enough to hurt him. He practically threw the liquid into his mouth. As soon as he did so, his wounds began to heal, the bolt dropped from his leg and he braced himself for more attacks, while he looked longingly at the door to the outside.

Anarya cast a healing spell. A ball of soft light rolled from her halo to her hand. She gritted her teeth, gripped her heavy mace, and ran between the battling foes and her comrades to get to the wounded Franti. The looter fighting Avelina made a half-hearted swipe at her with his long sword, but couldn't hurt such a beautiful woman. Avelina touched Franti. The healing light flared and moved to Franti's injuries and healed them completely.

So I was distracted and forgot to include the +1 to hit for the bless spell. This would have changed the events in the previous post significantly. It's too late to edit that post, so disregard it and replace it with the following. Sorry.

Avelina's mace, with the added blessing of Iomedae, knocked the wind out of the looter about to drink a potion, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness, dropping his potion bottle unopened.

Anarya thus had a clear path to get to Franti to deliver healing energy. She did ready her mace, since she had to get within reach of the guy with the flail in order to reach Franti. Her healing spell completely removed all trace of the flail wound that Franti had just received.

The looter who had been blinded by the glitterdust and was hiding behind a shelf of merchandise moved back into the fray, now able to see. He attacked Ellena, but his longsword was blocked by her shield.

The apparent leader of the gang, swung his flail at Karas, then stepped back and attacked Franti. Karas saw the flail coming and tried to move out of the way, but his movement was hindered by the tanglefoot bag remnants and he was hit. 5 points. Franti ducked under the attack on him.

Regarding the current situation:
Franti can see that one of the other blinded looters who had been cowering in the corner, blade extended, ready to swing at anything that attacked him, was now recovering his sight.

Karas is still entangled by the tanglefoot bag, the temporary hit point Anarya gave him is gone, and one of his hit points heals.

Karas said he may be slow to post this week, so I'll advance him to attack the leader, since he is the most dangerous foe at the moment.

Having heard Anevia's plea, the fool doesn't lash out. Franti primed his sap, waiting for an ally to compromise the leader's defenses should they refuse to yield.

Franti does not get the flanking bonus or sneak attack damage, as there is no one threatening the opponent on the opposite side. An ally would have to threaten the enemy from (4,5) or (5,5). So he does 9 points (no +1 from the Bless, it only helps with the attack roll).

The leader did not relent from the fight in response to Anarya's plea. Perhaps it had to do with the tiefling and the kobold in the group making him think maybe the others were only pretending to be crusaders or else he just doesn't want to be captured.

Since he did not immediately surrender, Franti hit him again with his sap.

Tauni, unable to get off a clear shot with her crossbow and not wanting to use up a spell when the others seemed to have the enemy outnumbered, prepared another crossbow bolt and prepared to fire should a belligerent come into the clear.

The looter who had been defending himself in the SW corner decided to try to make a break for the door, but he couldn't get past Anarya. Franti bopped him with his sap (9 points, NL).

Anarya has the option of making an attack of opportunity.

The leader's action will be posted once we see if Anarya takes an AOO on Looter 2.

Anarya backed up her plea for an end to hostilities by not attacking the looter who tried to run past her.

The looter showed his gratitude by not attacking her either, although he did lash out at Franti who had just given him a nasty bruise. But his swing did not connect.

The leader of the gang attempted to reposition Anarya so he can make a break for the door. Anarya was not in the mood to put up with this after he rebuffed her generous offer of safety for surrender, so she took a swing at him with her heavy mace. The weapon bounced harmlessly off his armor.

He shoved Anarya to the side and tried to dash to the door. Karas was not about to let Anarya be manhandled or let the cad escape. He raked across the man's side with his claws, which cut into the man's side. He staggered a step or two, and collapsed.

Seeing his leader cut down, the last remaining looter dropped his sword and collapse on the floor begging for mercy, leave a yellow pool on the floor.

Melee is over.

Upon closer inspection, none of the looters is dead. Their loot sack is back near where only remaining conscious one is wetting himself. I'm going to give you the contents and forego the spellcraft rolls, since you'll figure it out soon enough.

Treasure: The looters keep their collection of treasure in a large sack. The trove consists of 122 gp, 418 sp, a set of silver cutlery worth 125 gp, a brass goblet worth 15 gp, a portrait of a young man in fancy dress cut from its frame and rolled up worth 55 gp, a flask of acid, a flask of alchemist’s fire, two vials of antitoxins, three vials of holy water, three +1 flaming bolts, an elixir of vision, and a potion of barkskin +2, a wand of Ghostbane Dirge (47 charges, CL 4), Gloves of Larceny.

While looking around the shop, there did not appear to be anything to suggest this was a safe house, just the usual alchemical wares. Franti then noticed that the items on a shelf near the back of the store looked like bottles of salt and colored water rather than the more colorful and varied contents on other shelves. Close inspection confirmed that the wares fake and a bit of poking and prodding revealed that the shelves functioned as a door that opened onto a stairway that descended to a basement level. Secret door marked with an S on the map.
