Hexcrawl Hex Size

Rules Discussion

How big should each Hex in a Hexcrawl be? I know a standard party at 25 feet can move 18 miles in a day (Assuming I can remember the actual speed.) So should they travel 1 hex a day, 2 hexes a day or maybe I do the standard 6 miles and let them travel 3 hexes in a day.

Is this for a published campaign or a homebrew? Only reason I ask is because it depends on how big the map is/ how much time you want them to spend traveling vs encounters.

There are the published Hexploration subsystem rules in Player Core. But like all subsystem rules, they are guidelines to use as a starting point for homebrew. And may even be overridden by published APs.

But looking at the rules, a hex is 12 miles from corner to corner.

Traveling to an adjacent hex typically costs 1 exploration task (can be adjusted for the terrain of the hex and the method of travel). And if the slowest member of the group has a speed of 12 - 25 feet (and 25 feet movement speed is fairly standard), then the group only has 1 exploration task available per day - though they can do a forced march to do 2 movement tasks in one day.

The Fist of the Ruby Phoenix adventure path features a section with smaller-scale hexploration where each activity is only supposed to take an hour. So there's an example of scaling it.

Season of ghosts also uses two mile wide hexes, although since the valley is not too large and very much the party's home, I wouldn't call it conventional hexploration.
