Does size effect damage dice?

Rules Discussion

I ask because I've been studying the Eidolon rules.

I know there are ways to increase the size of the Eidolon and boost Eidolon refers to doing more damage if you happen to have a way to increase the number of damage dice you role.

But I can't see anywhere in the rules for Eidolon that one might acquire extra damage dice except the Anger Phantoms Furious strike. I figured it'd be weird if that was the only place the Eidolon boost damage dice bonus applied.

But I can't see anywhere else to get more damage dice, the size increasing feats (hulking and towering) don't mention it, they just mention reach. But I know if PF1 size did effect dice so I'm wondering if its something the game assumes you know.

So, does size effect damage dice?

No

To answer the rest of the question...

You can increase the unarmed attack weapon damage through the Summoner's equipment. Under 'Gear and your Eidolon' in the class description it says that the Eidolon benefits from the Summoner's Handwraps of Mighty Blows or alternatively from one weapon that the Summoner invests and wields holds. Apparently you don't have to wield the weapon. So if you have a 2-handed weapon, you could invest it and hold it one handed while casting spells that need a free hand.

But no, size of a creature or a weapon does not change damage dice.

Oh

Janky lmao

Wouldn’t the phantom not be proficient in most two hand weapons anyhow?

Edit: so, striking hand wraps definitely top of any summoners shopping list if they’re after a fighty Eidolon

Well, it is the Summoner that is investing and holding the weapon - not the Eidolon. The Eidolon is actually not proficient with any weapons. Though they do make a note that the unarmed attacks that the Eidolon uses can be described as being from a weapon that is part of the Eidolon itself.

So if the Summoner isn't planning on fighting with a weapon themselves anyway, a common tactic is to just grab whatever loot weapon that the rest of the party doesn't use and invest that.

I might also note that needing a free hand for spells isn't really a thing that happens to summoners, as they can replace material components with somatic, with no mention of a free hand still being needed (Unlike the Wizard feat Eschew Materials that does need a totally free hand, still).

Fair enough. I was just trying to contrive some sort of example where you would want to hold a weapon instead of wield it.

In general, only specific call outs for size changes to change your damage die do so. See the Enlarge spell.

Conversely, look at small and tiny PCs which don't say anything.

And PC options to grow to large or larger (pretty much the Giant instinct barbarian) specifically tell you how it affects your damage dice.

So, if it isn't mentioned it doesn't happen has been the standard answer.

Conceptually yes (otherwise people couldn't disbelieve taking minimal damage from big scary illusory dragons). Mechanically, in practice, no. Creature and weapon sizes are divorced from damage. You might see trends of larger creatures doing more damage, but that is often because of their higher level, not because they are larger (as an aside, there are few very large low-level creatures in 2e).

All the rules you're looking for are in the Summoner rules

Quote:

Gear And Your Eidolon

Your eidolon can't wear or use magic items, except for items with the eidolon trait. An eidolon can have up to two items invested. Your eidolon's link to you means it can benefit from certain magic items invested by you.

• Your eidolon gains item bonuses to Perception and skills from any magical items that you have invested.
• Your eidolon increases its item bonus to AC based on your armor's armor potency rune or bracers of armor. It also gains an item bonus to its saves from the resilient rune on your armor or from your bracers of armor. Other permanent items that grant or increase item bonuses to AC and saves might convey a similar benefit, as determined by the GM.
• Your eidolon's Strikes benefit from the fundamental and property runes on your handwraps of mighty blows. Alternatively, you can Invest a magic weapon (even though magic weapons can't normally be Invested) to share its fundamental and property runes with your eidolon. You share these benefits only while you're holding the weapon, and you can have no more than one weapon invested in this way at a time. In either case, the eidolon gains only the benefits that can apply to its attacks, with the same limitations noted in handwraps of mighty blows.

Everything except that weapon damage increases as part of normal character progression, specifically from striking runes, which a new player may not have picked up on yet.

In fact, only the permanent increase to damage dice from striking runes matters for things that count damage dice (like boost eidolon), not temporary changes from actions like Furious Strike.
