Shrinking monsters for later?

Hi folks,
Back dm-ing PF1 after a long break and boy have I forgotten a lot.

I'd like an npc to have a cockatrice in their pocket à la bag of tricks and throw this at the party to distract them. I thought there was a spell that did this but all I can think of is shrink item. I want it to be an item and not have my bad guy be, say, a summoner.

Am I missing something obvious?

Cheers!

I don't recall any spell that can do that, but you can make it a one-shot magic item, like a figurine of wondrous power with only one use.
Or the NPC can have access to a customized spell.
There is no need to explain how he was able to use the trick.

The main question is what kind of action is using the "miniature cockatrice" and how large is its impact on the encounter.

polymorph any object it into a stone before hand and quickened dispel or something similar after he throws it?

You may have been thinking of the Carry Companion spell. But I don't think there are any cockatrice companions or familiars.

Thanks folks, then I'll just use it as a one-shot variant bag of tricks. It'll die in a round but the first look on their faces will be worth it :)

In a lower magic way Disguise Other:T2 can work nicely to transform a pet cockatrice into a 'chicken'(Galluvix).
Alternatively a sleeping cockatrice in a bag is still pretty dangerous.

Shrink Item got nerfed as it affected creatures in 3.5 and was used for this purpose. There is the conundrum from 'if you bag it then shrink the bag & contents'... still I don't think you want to open that particular door.
Bag of Trick uses Summon Nature's Ally for natural creature (typically an animal, fey, magical beast, outsider with the elemental subtype, or a giant).
A Wizard version could use Summon Monster...

Might be thinking of binding, which has a minimus containment that you can dispel on the fly.

Binding wrote:
Minimus Containment: The subject is shrunk to a height of 1 inch or less and held within some gem, jar, or similar object. The binding is permanent. The subject does not need to breathe, eat, or drink while contained, nor does it age. Reduce the save DC by 4.

Carry Companion could work. You just need a way to make a cockatrice have a helpful attitude.

So, charm monster should work?

Seems like an interesting combo. I can especially imagine a witch doing this. Start with slumber, so the creature is considered willing. Then use charm monster and carry companion. Have a whole zoo you can break out at any time.

ChrmMon:E4, CrryCmpn:T2 {note: thinking about if the critter has to wake & give assent, a GM may restrict you to 1 companion as in Org Play}

hmmm, an alternative is Baleful Polymorph:T5 undoing it with Dispel Magic:A3 Grt:A6...
The OP seemed to want to do a low level method so I deleted my comment about the above. Casting Sleep then putting it in a bag seemed pretty low level...

That covers the willing part but not the helpful attitude part. An asleep monster has exactly the same save as when it is awake. "Willing" simply makes it a valid target for the spells that require a willing target, it still gets a save.

Yeah, I got that part mixed up. But Charm monster should still make the creature willing, since it becomes helpful.
