I was watching this video on Purple Dragons. and his talking about the lair got me thinking it'd be a good plot hook to include in wrath of the righteous. That is the cavern's under Mendev is the lair of a purple dragon that's been manipulating and controlling things for centuries to keep IT'S CITY from being overrun by the demons. Could even have a prominent NPC that supports the party be the purple dragon's human form. I could go into more detail but it's not the point of this post. What I'm wondering is do people know of any other obscure critters that have the potential for interesting plot hooks but might not be in the current run of the beastiary?

In terms of dubious allies, a Daemon supported a Kellid town in its resistance for about a century.

You could also go ahead and drop hints on Nocticula playing all sides in act 2 and 3, for example:

Have occassional chats with one of her envoys, who will seek to tempt the heroes in completely reasonable ways. Things like freeing prisoners from Alyushinyrras slave markets, exchanging information on other demons, turning specific demon aligned NPC over to her rather then to the inquisition etc.

Another option is infernal intervention. Eiseth plans to upstage Moloch as General of Hells armies, and adding a Demon Lord to her kill list could be just the way to do so.

Somewhat out of there, but possibly valid: There is another mini worldwound in Tian Min, one of the nations counterinvaded (possible the not Soviet hobgoblins), the force got cut off, but managed, by a combination of diplomacy and fighting, fight its way out into the Sarkorian worldwound.

Thanks for the suggestions I was wondering more about rare creatures than wrath specfic plot hooks. I thnk there was a mind flayer variant I used in one campaign but can't remember what it was.

Umm, personally I'd flip through the "Revisited" books ("Classic Horrors Revisited" to "Undead Revisited"). Any of them describes 10 races and how they can be used for the campaign. Even if a creature was already used extensively in campaigns, the books can add new facets.

Random examples:

Ghouls (Classic Horrors Revisited) sometimes create entire societies below ground.

Minotaurs (Class Monsters Revisited) build elaborate mazes and are cunning enough to lure people into them.

Troglodytes (Darklands Revisited) make unreliable allies or mercenaries.

Nabasus (Demons Revisited) can grow with the party.

Ropers (Dungeon Denizens Revisited) catch adventurers to start philosophical discussions with them. While they eat them, limb by limb.

Purple Dragon?

The video was discussing dragons and the rare types that cropped up in Dragon Magazine in relation to the theory of whether they were a crossbreed of the known chromatic dragons or the creation of a murdered sister of tiamat that had yellow, purple and orange heads as well as potentially plot hooks.

The purple dragon is a dragon type that has strong family bonds, wields power in the shadows and lives underground. Its lair over time aquires a dark aura that lowers light levels and even negates dark vision. It has a very nasty plasma breath weapon that in addition to the damage it does because of the bright light causes temporary blindness. Usually mistaken for a black dragon due to hunting at night and being mistaken for them.

It's DnD not Pathfinder but it got me wondering if there are hidden creatures like this someone might know of. Here's the link to the video Purple Dragon.
