Cloak of Shadow and Low Light Vision

Rules Discussion

Hey folks,

Trying to build a super sneaky shadowy like character and looking at stuff like Fetchling, Rogue, Shadowcaster, and the like. With Cloak of Shadow it says it creates dim light (magical darkness) which gives the target concealment condition (which can be used for Hide). Dim light rules says unless the seeker has low light vision (or darkness, etc) then objects and creatures are concealed. I'm guessing I already know the answers to these questions but going to ask anyways and thanks in advance!

Question 1: Even though Cloak of Shadow specifically states the target gains concealment, Low Light Vision still negates this?

Question 2: It being magical darkness has no relevance in regards to being seen by low light vision?

Question 3: Dim light mentions "seeker" which I assume refers to something using the Seek action (maybe?). Do creatures with low light vision automatically spot or become aware of creatures in dim light (assuming they are looking in the creatures general direction or whatever)?

Question 4: How common is low light vision? I only have a druid (which is a blast!) so far but it seems low light vision is very common and would negate the usefulness of concealment and sneak when using light levels.

Any suggestions for a shadowy character that can slip away into the shadows at will?

1-3: it follows normal visibility rules which means yes, someone with low-light vision or darkvision can see the target clearly without even trying. If the target's only concealment is from the spell, the target isn't concealed to them and so is automatically spotted as mentioned under Precise Senses

4: low-light vision and darkvision are pretty common

I recommend familiarizing yourself with the senses and stealth rules fully and having other forms of concealment at your disposal to augment your kit. Either stay near or have ways to conjure physical or illusory cover or use smokesticks and the like when Cloak of Shadow or Darkness aren't effective

Goblins can hit the possibility to hide whenever/wherever they want by lvl 13 rather than lvl 15.

They also have darkvision, which helps infiltrating during night time or in dark places.

The laughing shadow magus can blink strike, and by lvl 10 they can do it trading the strike for invisibility.

This makes easy to move around without being noticed ( by lvl 12, with enhanced refocus, you can basically be invisible forever if you refocus every 10 minutes).

The monk abundant step can also help you moving from place to place, especially given how fast the monk moves, making it an excellent choice for a stealth character.

Plus, there are consumables, spells, and so on.

Ps: talking about focus spells, remember that a rogue can only refocus x1, so if you like to play with them you may consider a class which hits improved refocus by lvl 12 and lvl 18. It's really game changing in terms of gameplay!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If Cloak of Shadows is countered by simple low-light vision, what is the point? The VAST majority of enemies seem to have low-light or darkvision. This makes Cloak of Shadows EXTREMELY weak for a focus spell.
