Are Eidolons considered magical?

Rules Questions

This question came up during A game I was running. Are Eidolons considered magical for getting through magical immunity's and other related effects on monsters.

During an encounter, My player ran into a Shadow which are incorporeal. meaning only that magic can harm them. my player argued that since Eidolons are summoned outsiders, they are magical and can attack and Grapple incorporeal monsters.

I could not find anything to backup or refute this claim in the book. so is this correct or not?

No they are not inherently magical.

like all summoned critters once summoned they are just physical creatures.

If you want justification there is a 1 point eidelon evolution called Magic Attacks which make the Eidelons attacks magical for the purposes of overcoming DR.

If Eidelons were inherently magical then all their attacks would be magical by default and this 1 point evolution wouldn't exist.

No Eidolon's are not innately magical. They are outsiders. You might recommend to the player that they take the magic attacks evolution so that it can better deal with DR/incoporeal creatures.

ok, thanks. I didn't think it made sense. and it made the battle with the Shadow really short and anti- climatic.

1) As has been mentioned, eidolons need to take the evolotion to be considered magical attacks.

2) Even with the magical attacks, they(eidolons) still do half damage per attack.

3) Incorporeal creatures are immune to being grappled or tripped.

Part of this is my fault. First GM and all. Good thing I have such great resources like this site to help me out.

Liberty's Edge

I suspect what your player was talking about was that creatures who have DR/magic strike so as to overcome the same. Many summoned creatures arrive this way, or did in 3.5.

I believe summoned critters also radiate magic, which can be spellcraft checked for the (conjuration) school as well... But still don't count as being "magical" attacks unless stated in the write up (IE stated to bypass as such and such or has the same DR type as the defender).
