First Moon Knight Trailer for the Disney+ series.

Although he's long been portrayed as having mental difficulties, this seems to take inspiration from some of the comic book stuff of the last decade or so. Definitely some heavy supernatural stuff, not like you saw in the early stuff.

Still, I look forward to the series.

Oh that dose look interesting.

end of March is it.

Scarab Sages

Seems Ethan Hawke is playing Dr. Arthur Harrow, and old mad scientist type Moon Knight enemy.

Werewolf By Night is in this series. I read a couple old issues from the ten cent bin when I was a kid, but I only remembered his name being
"Jack." Going back and reading the wiki, turns out the Werewolf's true name is... Jack RUSSEL? As in... the terrier breed?

Anyway, WbN used to scare little kid me, along with the old horror comics. This trailer looks like it's trying to tap into those darker elements. Good.

I WANT this to be dark, like, twist my stomach up dark. I know it won't b/c Disney, but I WANT it to be.

Finally, I didn't remember MK having full on alternate personalities, just having a "secret ID" as a cab driver, but reading the wiki some more looks like the character went full DID before the Hulk did.

MK’s mental history has evolved over the years. During his initial comic series, they touched on it here and there, mostly via confusion over which identity he was using at any given time. Then there was a run during the late 80s and early 90s when they hardly touched on it at all (at least not that I remember). I think it’s only been in the last 10-15 years or so they’ve acknowledged the DID, with alters instead of just various secret identities.

While I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere, there's a lot of speculation that he will be. They have already started filming Werewolf by Night halloween special for October release, so introducing him in Moon Knight makes sense.

Well, in the extended trailer above, doesn't the victim on the bathroom floor have excessively hairy legs? Couple that with the animalistic noises in that scene and the speculation that WbN is in Moon Knight, and I feel its a pretty strong possibility.

That being said, I may just be seeing/hearing what I WANT to here. Research bias is real, and it can be the ruination of any fan.

According to IMDb, Gaspard Ulliel will be playing Anton Mogart. That’s another dive into the past from the comics, even further back than the supposed (I’ve seen it in two articles, but nowhere else) Ethan Hawke character.

In the comics, Mogart was the true identity of The Midnight Man, a very skilled art thief whom MK goes up against a few times. Later, they had his son assume the identity of Midnight, starting as MK’s sidekick, but eventually becoming a cyborg villain.

While that's the most likely theory, I've seen some speculation that it could be some sort of Anubis incarnation with the Egyptian mythology connections. I'm still betting on werewolf though - Marvel seems to be building up all of it's supernatural characters right now - so it would track with that.

All I know is I want to see Moon Knight eventually pull out his suit and tie and beat the ever loving crap out of some mooks. :p :)

Warren Ellis and Brian Bendis really dived into full-on split personalities/voices-in-the-head tropes when they wrote the comic. Maybe some writers have done different things since then; I wouldn't know.

But I'm glad that those tropes exist for the character, because it potentially adds a lot to an on-screen adaptation. I wonder how much of a role the show is going to give the Egyptian god Khonshu. Will they be a character or just a background force?

They show Khonshu in the trailer, so I’m hoping for some conversations between him and Spector.

Holy crap! That sucks! Rest in Peace, dude.

French actor Gaspard Ulliel, 37, dies after ski accident

Sadly ski accidents do happen...I'm sorry for him and his family.

And yes, I think it's pretty likely we'll see Khonshu (in some form) on the small screen.

Indeed, this is a tragedy. One of my players said on Wednesday, "god I'm a terrible person. my brain immediately went, 'whelp, definitely no season 2 now'"

We have not replied to him yet. But I like his honesty. :P

I'm not sure having Gaspard dying affects Moon Knight since actual actor, (and former Apocalypse), Oscar Issac is still alive. Conversely we're still unsure who will be Black Panther now that it's been over two years...

Sovereign Court

Yeah, I now take the end movie captions "The Ten Rings Will be Back" and "The Eternals Will Return" with a grain of salt...

I dunno about that, PDK. I mean I think we might see the Ten Rings and/Shang-Chi. The Eternal...meh. I mean if they ever redo the movie and put in some of the actual comics lore (Kronos, Uranos and the rest...)

I love the Bill Sienkiewicz art as well. I saw that earlier on FB.

Nice! I can't wait for the Superbowl trailer.

I like the mummy motif of the costume. Makes sense.

Indeed. I thought it was a really cool detail. Almost makes me wish they’d use it in the comics.

Super Bowl Trailer

At least, I think it is. I’m not wasting time watching the game, but the article I found said this was it.

It might be Khonshu because he often has wrappings. Regardless, this was a great 30 second trailer.

meh

Think I need another episode or 2 to tell

Scarab Sages

It was…..interesting. Certainly different from the earliest Moon Knight in the comics. I think this first episode could have been better, but for the direction they’re going with the character it works.

Oscar Isaacs did a fantastic job.

Spoiler:
I really don’t like the way they’re doing Steven Grant in this. I would have preferred they invent an entirely new persona, but I can see why they wanted a familiar name.

I kind of like the blackouts. Seeing the results of the violence, but not the violence itself, is a bit of a welcome change. As long as they don’t over do it.

I wasn’t initially thrilled with the reinvention of Harrow as a mystic, but I kind of like the way they’re going with this. This interpretation of Ammit as more villainous, punishing people for what they haven’t even done yet, is creative. And, this way, you save some of his better villains for hopefully future seasons. Although I know they cast someone as the real identity of Midnight Man.

Loved the call out to Frenchie. Not sure if we’ll see him in the season.

Loved F. Murray Abraham as the voice of Khonshu.

Scarab Sages

I didn’t catch it when I watched the episode, but apparently….

Spoiler:
….the living statue he talks to is named Crawley, which is a nice nod to the comics. Although I’d prefer the comic Crawley.

With zero knowledge of the character from comics, I enjoyed the first episode a lot. Also, lots of speculation that

Spoiler:
the village and castle he was near was Latveria!

Joel,

I doubt

Spoiler:
Latveria
has any German speakers.

I liked this episode primarily because it's a nice change of pace to do something you don't expect. And plus it gives the show a little horror vibe.

Spoiler:
this site, not only do they, but the Latverian language is similar to German and Polish, so how do we know the signage wasn't actually in Latverian?

I'm in the same boat as JoelF847, I don't remember anything about this character from the comics. I knew a couple bits from reading as a little kid like, nearly 40 years ago, but mostly I went in blind. As such I liked it a lot. I like the different main characters, the transitions and even the museum setting.

Loved every minute of it. Loved the hero. Loved the villain. This is a perfect show.

PS: I hope Marc comes back to woo the girlfriend back into Steven's life... Steven needs it. The eating chocolate alone scene was very sad.

How about the voicemails to his mom? Heartbreaking. I wonder if those'll end up being some kind of plot device, like he's actually leaving those VM's for Marc or something.

On the funnier side though, two words: Cupcake Van. "Wake me UP! Before you go-go, cuz I'm not planning on going solo..."

Anyone catch the box in the van behind his head in that scene?
It was labeled ‘von Doom’

It was actually von D in the first shot, but later was shown to be von Darrelman. Still a fun Easter egg.

Liberty's Edge

Ah!

I have basically no knowledge of the comic apart from from a handful of fanboys going "he's like Batman but cooler". I saw the first episode and it was OK. I'll give it another episode but I suspect I'll drop it quickly.

My wife and I played a fun game where we called out every time the studio saved money by replacing the actions scenes with a blackout.

The times I read Moon Knight when I was younger was when I followed writers rather than characters, so I've seen how this character's concept has changed from writer to writer. I don't have any hang-ups (I think) about what the character is supposed to be like, and I enjoy what I've seen so far. Oscar Isaac is going a great job. Looking forward to the second episode.

Scarab Sages

I already didn’t like the way the show was portraying Steven Grant. This episode had him even worse. Too whiny and useless. I really wish they’d just invented and entirely new persona they could then somehow kill off. Then they could have introduced a more faithful version of Grant.

I’m also not to keen on Layla. I’d have preferred it be Marlene. I’ve heard it was one of the directors that pushed for this change. I’m guessing he’s not a comic book fan. Still, the chick they’ve got playing her did a good job with the character. I just hope they don’t end up putting her in the role of next Moon Knight, only because I’d rather see Dr. Badr.

I continue to be thoroughly impressed with Oscar Isaac’s performance. I really hope they end up introducing a properly done Jake Lockley, just so we can see him play that role as well. I just wish we’d gotten to see more of Moon Knight (and a better Mr. Knight), but at least this was better than the first episode.

I’m still not crazy about the redesign of Arthur Harrow, but Ethan Hawke is great the way they’ve written him.

Sovereign Court

Loved the second episode as well. Loved that Steven Grant can now also call the suit, and that he's calling the Mr. Knight version instead! I suspect his self-confidence and relation with Konshu will improve, which may lead to a personal fortune similar to that seen in the comics.

An important distinction between Spector and Grant is that Spector is just a merc, while Grant actually has lots of knowledge on egyptian lore... which could lead to... archeological finds... and... money... ;)

Now hoping for the limo and glider... but at least the limo! :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As I said I never read most of the comics, so I don't know how Grant is "supposed" to be. I like Steven in the show. I like him precisely because he cuts that classic Marvel mold for me: a regular human reacting to having fantastic powers in a terrifying new world.

Oscar Isaac is killing it in this role. Steven's reaction to being chased by Konshu was so good it hurt a little. Seeing Steven starting to take some agency for himself too was genuinely heartwarming. I like the suggested dichotomy; Marc says his work is necessary but left him "bloody" yet Steven, when chatting w/Harrow, is willing to be surrounded by bad guys in order to question the morality of violent judgment.

In other words, Steven is the "good" guy, Marc is the "Bad" guy.

I enjoy that the show's writers are letting us come to these truths about each character w/out smashing it in our faces. At least, it didn't feel that way to me, YRMV. Also, can we just TALK about that rooftop chase scene? OMG that was cool!

Finally, this show does a good job mixing horror and humor, light and dark. I hope that stays through the whole run. I hope it continues to give voice to the underdog Steven and lets him reemerge from the chrysalis of the mirror w/out having to become a typical Marvel "hero." I hope.

Yes, I’m glad they introduced the Mr. Knight suit at least, as it’s one of my favorite of the comic book developments in recent years. Although the persona behind it is much different in the books.

As for the future….I could get behind evolving Steven Grant into the more confident, millionaire version. Although my hopes for what to see would be Frenchie and the helicopter. And maybe some Stained Glass Scarlet.

Scarab Sages

Mark Hoover 330 wrote:

Indeed. That’s something from the comics I’m glad they not only kept, but are making important. Spector, while not being as outright villainous and murderous as some of his old mercenary colleagues (like Bushman), was still not necessarily a “nice man” and was quite morally ambiguous, if not downright “bad” at times.

I liked the scene where Steven and Marc were arguing about Spector’s supposed murdering of people in Egypt, and they had Marc implying things weren’t as they might seem. Which kind of was the case in his origin.

Episode 2 still has me wanting to see the next episode, which for me is a good thing. For instance, I'm really only hanging on to "Star Trek: Picard" out of some probably misplaced brand loyalty.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32, 2011 Top 16

I described the show to a friend today as tonally a blend of Antman and Daredevil - agree with the mix of humor and horror done well. Also has some flashes of Evil Dead in that regard.

Sovereign Court

I also find that the re-watch factor meter is high on this one. I've seen each episode twice, and I'm thinking about watching a third time now.
