Am I right this would work under the rules?

Scarab Sages

Just working on a magic act for my arcanist (they have perform stage magic and blend tricks "Is this your card" with actual magic "Snapdragon fireworks). A smoke pellet can be thrown as a ranged attack and dimensional slide can be used as a move action. You can move and attack (but not full attack) so I think they could do the ninja vanish trick as part of their act. Throwing down a smoke pellet to fill their square with obscuring smoke for a round during which they dimensional slide to another location without anyone seeing. I just want to check I'm not missing anything that would prevent this working.

The smoke pellet would block the arcanist's line of sight.

Rats I was worried I'd missed something and of course it would be an obvious one. Thanks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

actually it should work.

smoke pellet work like smokestick but only for 5 ft space.
and smokestick work like fog cloud.

all in all.

being in 5 ft of smoke\fog give concealment = you can see through it but foggy so no blocked line of sight. once you are in 10ft and more it blocks sight and anything behind it get total concealment.

so dropping a smoke pellet which make 5 ft of smoke will give concealment which let others see you ,but per rules allow to try a stealth check. so i would assume just popping into some place you can see but others can't will work the same as a successful check against anyone who try to see you. one moment they see you the next the fog move and your gone.
GM might actually ask you to use stealth or some1 might notice you actually vanish...but hey, that's the magic all along, no?

You can see into/out of 5' of fog/smoke... others can, too... so you would have to use Stealth in order to successfully "vanish".

The 5' of fog/smoke should provide the necessary concealment, and you should be able to make a Stealth check with your movement... Dimensional Slide is used as part of a move action... it is not its own action that takes the place of a move action [like Combat Advice], so you should still be able to make a Stealth check as part of a Dimensional Slide movement.

I think it works exactly as you intend it to. Great trick, actually... assuming you have the Stealth to pull it off. But you can just add Greater Shadow to the Sunsilk Ceremonial Armor you are already likely wearing. There's lots of ways to boost Stealth...

Note you still can't see past the 5ft smoke cloud, say if it was thrown between two people, they couldn't see each other, but they could see someone still within the cloud. So even if you fire it into your square, you not only gain the concealment to begin attempting stealth, but when you almost certainly step away from the cloud and away from the things trying to see you, they still can't see you as long as you don't path sideways away from the cloud. Works great in alleyways.
