Boons - what are they even

I've been playing PF for years, but I'm just now getting into organized play through PFS. It's a little frustrating not to be able to choose from many character races ... especially when I have bought all of these lovely source books.

I get a message from HeroLab that I need more Boons to unlock more playable races. What are boons even and how do they allow me to be a tiefling or whatever?

So, what's the fastest way to be able to play more races in organized play? Explain it to me like I'm 5.

You might want this posted in the PFS forums.

EDIT: I don't know PFS well, but does this help?

PFS Boons are basically unlockable rewards. Races can be purchased for achievement points (AcP) by going to My Organized Play on this website and purchasing. Uncommon ones cost 80 AcP, Rares cost 160. You get AcP at a rate of 1 per bounty, 4 per scenario or 12 per adventure (book), double if you were the GM.

Other boons are a reward for getting so much reputation with a faction or for completing certain modules/adventures/scenarios/quests or for being at particular paizocons.

Super helpful, thank you!

One thing that's weird - and maybe this is just the Hero Lab format - is that it seems like boons are tracked/earned by a particular character.

If I play a character long enough and earn AcP, can I then use them as a wish on other characters I create?

That's how it works in PFS2 (and now SFS), but in PFS1 they're on a per-character basis. I think this may be about PF1, based on what you've written? In that case, boon that gave you access to races are awarded for GMing at conventions (to encourage people to do so), and from the Regional Support Program - attending specific games days that have been given support.

Boons are tracked (typically) at a per-character level. ACP is tracked at the player level. (PFS2 and SFS use ACP, but they do have separate pools.)

Most boons are assigned to a particular character -- either the character that played the scenario, or that you chose when you purchased an ACP boon. There's some boons that unlock options for _all_ your characters, and a couple of boons that are designed to be transferred to a different character. There's also ACP boons that can be used to transfer character options with rarities, unlocked by chronicles, to a different character.

ACP on the other hand is earned at the player level. So it doesn't matter which character(s) earned the ACP or which character you choose to spend it on.

Now if you're asking about PFS1, Arcaian's answer is spot on.

Most boons are earned and bought for a particular character. If you want to have 2 sprite characters, for instance, you have to buy the sprite boon twice. Ones that are earned for all characters (not many I can think of) are few and far between.

Dark Archive

If you go to the organized play tab > my organized play, there should be a boons tab that will show you a list of the boons and their costs.

Also note that it's worth asking in the pfs forum if anyone knows the exact wording of a given boon before buying it, because the stubs on the boon page aren't always complete information.

Like the boon that lets you use adopted ancestry with some uncommon races. The stub says you can use adopted ancestry with leshy, hobgoblin, and lizardfolk. But the actual boon has a list of specific feats you can select, and only those feats. And has not been updated as more feats are released in other books.
