Scare to Death, Flourish Finish, Versatile Performance or Frightening Appearance

Rules Discussion

Hello, I have a question about Scare to Death.

Is it possible to affect each foe within 30 feet who can see you with Scare to death ?

Scare to Death :

Quote:
Attempt an Intimidation check against the Will DC of a living creature within 30 feet of you that you sense or observe and who can sense or observe you.

Flourishing Finish :

Quote:

Requirements Your last action was a Strike that dropped an opponent to 0 Hit Points.

...
Attempt a Performance check, comparing the result to the Will DC of each foe within 30 feet who can see you.

Versatile Performance : Prerequisites polymath muse

Quote:
...You can use Performance instead of Diplomacy to Make an Impression and instead of Intimidation to Demoralize. You can also use an acting Performance instead of Deception to Impersonate.

Frightening Appearance :

Quote:
When you make a Startling Appearance, you can also attempt to Demoralize each opponent within 10 feet to whom you were unnoticed before your Strike.

Thanks for your future answer.

No. Demoralize and Scare to Death are two different and unrelated actions, and Versatile Performance and Frightening Appearance only affect Demoralize. Likewise, Flourishing Finish is distinct from Demoralize. So, feats that affect Demoralize do not affect these two actions.

I think this falls under the second paragraph of Subordinate Actions

Subordinate Actions wrote:
Using an activity is not the same as using any of its subordinate actions. For example, the quickened condition you get from the haste spell lets you spend an extra action each turn to Stride or Strike, but you couldn’t use the extra action for an activity that includes a Stride or Strike. As another example, if you used an action that specified, “If the next action you use is a Strike,” an activity that includes a Strike wouldn’t count, because the next thing you are doing is starting an activity, not using the Strike basic action.

So for example, Frightening Appearance lets you use the Demoralize action. It doesn't say that you can use Scare To Death. Scare To Death is also an Intimidation action, but it is a different action than Demoralize.

I have a question about Mask of Pain and Frightening Appearance.

Startling Appearance permit to Demoralize each opponent within 10 feet to whom you were unnoticed before your Strike.

So is it possible to apply mental damage if each opponent within 10 feet has successfully demoralized ?

I would like to preface this with a quick reminder that being completely unnoticed isn't very common. Anyway, with that out of the way technically, yes, you could use mask of pain on any or all of the characters affected by Frightening Appearance... if you had the reactions for it. Typically you'll only have one reaction per round, though, so you'll probably have to pick one person to take the damage.

The key reason why this interaction works while many others don't is the wording in mask of pain's trigger. You simply have to succeed at a demoralize check, and vigilante has you make a demoralize check, not an intimidation check but specifically demoralize.
