Gunpowder and Runelords (Needs a more poetic name): Interest check not a recruitment

Recruitment

Good day, all. This is an interest check, not a recruitment. It could become a recruitment in a month or so, but I'm not ready to get it started now.

Two of my current campaigns are winding down, and I expect to have some space on my dance card for something new.

I've been ruminating over the Return of the Runelords AP. The Runelords are the big granddaddies and grandmeres of magic in Varisia, but what do they know about guns and gunpowder? Not much.

I'm interested in a version of Return of the Runelords where the player characters are a group of gunpowder/technology enthusiasts. Sure, you might be an ancient lord of sin magic, but have you heard about my boomstick?

The theme of the campaign would focus on characters who use guns and bombs. I'm not planning to make it easy and give everyone firearms proficiency or anything, but to use the rules for firearms and alchemy that are present in the game. The party would be a group of friends who share a love for this emergent technology, and become embroiled in using it to combat this Rising danger.

Obviously, I'd come up with more specific guidelines for the recruitment. My initial thoughts are that I'd either let everyone start as 2nd level or give everyone rich parents trait for free or both.

Sounds like a fun twist. I always like playing Alchemists so I'm interested.

An Alchemist with the Explosive missile discovery and Exotic weapon firearms proficiency would be a nice build.

A Trap breaker or Sapper Alchemist would also be fun.

dotting for interest.

Sounds interesting, I would like to know more

"Did someone say... 'boomstick'?"

No one expects the boomstick inquisition... I am in!

I keep wanting to play an Eldritch Archer who uses a gun instead of a bow. Count me in.

Definitely sounds like an intriguing idea. Count me in if you decide to run a game.

I have a number of Possessed Hand builds, and I have been itching (ha) to build an Eldritch Guardian/Trench Fighter who uses their Detached Hand familiar and shared combat feats to fire off a Large Musket twice the size of themself, via Artillery Team.

For optics, I would prefer if they were a Small size character, but Possessed Hand builds are hard to build without being a human.

This has my attention.

EDIT: you said you wanted a better name. I'll throw an effort out there with "Gunsmoke over Sandpoint." :)
EDIT 2: "Shootout at Sandpoint?"

@Redblade, this is Return and not Rise, so the small Varisian town it starts at is Roderic's Cove

Ah nuts, my brain filled in "Rise" there, thanks for the catch!

(crumples up ideas, throws them in trash)

SANDPOWDER - 'tis the name!

How about Guns, Runes, and Lead?

The Guns of Varisia (The Guns of Navarone)

I might throw in my hat, depending on build rules. I've wanted to rock a Gun Chymist for some time now.

Will this be 1e or 2e?

1e

Silver Crusade

I'm totally going to play a late 1800s/early 1900s british "hunter". (ranger that uses a gun) most likely.

Ooh, sounds like fun! I've always wanted to try playing a gunslinger, a lot of DMs won't let you play with guns. Or maybe a pistol-packin' inquisitor of Brigh with the Black Powder inquisition.

Sounds interesting, I gotta say.

I love firearms and always seem to build a character for games where they are an option. I love the idea of a game where everyone in the party has them. I’ve thought of running such a game myself. I’d love to be a part!

@Rorek55 - Allan Quatermain all the way!

Silver Crusade

Mandatory stache and hat.

If this was a Rise otR game, I would say Guns'n'Rises :P

Maybe... Return of the Gun? XD

Build rules would be pretty straightforward. 20 point buy, 2 traits (one from the campaign). I'd allow some gunslinger related third party stuff, though I'm not sure what yet.

Would be a fun opportunity for the Spellslinger wizard. Pew Pew Enervation rays out of my gun.

Would all players be required to submit characters that use firearms or would they just have to have a tech or engineering theme?

I've been a Gunmage lover since I first saw them (go team Llhael!).

There's already a calling for Eldritch Archer, which seems the easiest way around, but I'm sure there's a way to fix that.

Oh my god, someone else who knows Iron Kingdoms?!

I bet there's many people here in the forums who know IK/Warma/Hordes. There's been some attempts at DMing a game, even.

Grand Lodge

I might be interested in joining this if it ends up forming.

I don't know if this can be made to work mechanically, but...

My thinking was the technology of guns and bombs, the technology of progress on Golarion. I wasn't thinking of technology in the sense of Iron Gods alien tech.

Related tech themes would be fine.

I ran a version of the 3rd edition Iron Kingdoms stuff combined with Ravenloft. I loved that setting and the rules. If we are talking about the miniatures game, I never got into that.

I'm thinking of naming the campaign Runesmoke and Gunlords. Or Gunlords and Runesmoke. Not committed, though.

You can call it 'Happy, fluffy sugarfun time.' and I'll play it. :)

Isn’t there an Artificer Class? A buddy of mine and I were passing back and forth ideas for one, never went past that really. Sounded amazing though

Hmm. I'll probably go Scavenger Investigator for this. Whipping out fancy gadgets and the like just speaks to me.

May I suggest that your title just be "Runesmoke"?

I'm finished with 1e, so I'll bow out, but it does sound awesome. Hope you have lots of fun!

I've done both and loved them. Warmachine gets quite expensive though. :( The 3e Iron Kingdoms rulebooks are a lot cheaper.
