DCs by Level examples

Rules Discussion

Looking at page 503 of the Core Rulebook, I see a great chart that lists DCs by level of the challenge.

However, it doesn't give any advice or examples on this particular page.

For example, maybe lifting ip a manhole cover should be a Level 1 challenge with a DC of 15.

I realize a lot of challenges fit neatly in skills listings, but since this list was provided in the rules it would be awesome to see what everyone has done.

The reason examples aren't accompanying this chart is because the chart is only meant to be used for things that actually have a level.

Tasks that don't involve something with a level, like a manhole cover, are what the other chart (Simple DCs) are for.

That's why the text accompanying the charts say "Simple DCs work well when you need a DC on the fly and there's no level associated with the task." and "When you're determining a skill DC based on something that has a level, use Table 10-5 to set the DC."

Yeah, DCs by Level are not used for static obstacles like a manhole cover, they're for active opposition of the level in question (like Recall Knowledge checks on a specific foe, or other things targeting or relating to said specific enemy).

Simple DCs (with the modifiers for 'Adjusting Difficulty' sometimes) are used for other things that lack a level. And, indeed, if you look in the Skill rules, many actions have a number of sample difficulties listed by the Simple DC chart.
