After about 30 minutes of finding dead links, I thought a post with current groups accepting new players might be useful.

That should be the Recruitment forum. The first four entries are stickies, they will always be on top of the list, even if the initital posting was years ago. Which might have been the reason for not finding anything. Alternatively you could go for the campaign list.

Beyond that, there are other forums like Roll20 and Giant in the Playground.
