Looking for a name for a ship deck.

Advice

Scarab Sages

I've been playing around with layout for a ship and I've got it all fitted into 3 decks.

Deck 1: Bridge
Deck 2: Work Areas.
Deck 3: Crew/Cargo.

I'm trying to stick names on the various decks to identify their general purpose.

Deck 1: Command Deck
Deck 2: ?
Deck 3: Crew Deck.

yes the 3rd deck also has the cargo hold but its primarily for the crew living quarters, galley, entertainment, etc. I'm stuck on the middle deck and what I should call it (med bay, tech lab, arcane laboratory, engines, other non mapped systems (life support, ship computers, etc).

Anyone have any suggestions for a spaceship deck to cover all the working area of it?

Deck 2: Office Space

Engineering and Medical

Operations Deck.

pretty wide scope, yet descriptive.

I like that last one thanks for all the suggestions.

I would move the med-bay to the crew deck and the cargo to the second deck and then simply call it "Engineering Deck"

For a cargo ship, I lean to something like that. Call it "Crew Deck", "Engineering Deck", "Cargo Deck". Crew deck is where people live and work, Engineering deck is where ship systems live and work, and Cargo deck is where bulk storage lives and works. *ahem*

Bridge, living quarters, galley, medical, those are all on Crew Deck. Engines, power core, life support, those are all on Engineering. Cargo deck has the cargo bays, and probably any odds and ends involving docking or landing ( vehicle bays, storage for loading/unloading gear, etc ).

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Kevin. Or Jerome. Those are good second deck names.

Medical was originally on the lowest level but got moved for a number of reasons. The cargo hold pretty much needs to be on the lowest level with the crew quarters otherwise it gets hard to load it and for a medium transport there's only so many decks you can put on it.

Valid Point, maybe then move the labs etc. down to Deck 3 and Crew quarters to Deck 2. This way you could have:

Deck 1: Bridge -> Bridge Deck
Deck 2: Crew/Medbay -> Crew Deck
Deck 3: Labs/Worskshops/Engineering/Cargo -> Operations & Cargo

This would also fit with modern airliner and would make boarding resupply more easy (simply add one or two airlock to Deck 2).
Crew can board directly to Deck 2, while supplies and cargo will be brought on board via a ramp at Deck 3. This would also allow for storing supplies for the labs/shops in the cargo area.

I put the work areas on the middle deck close to the bridge on the basis they would be more important to access quickly than recreation though I can see the counter argument to that. Still since your interested here are the restrictions/reasoning I was under for any other suggestions you have in the meantime I'll go back to playing with ship placement as I was trying to modify two ships to make the one I wanted and while I moved a room or two it never actually occured to me to move the entire crew quarters and the ship design did change a bit since I first tried that. I was also sort of thinking in terms of just swapping existing labs on the ship for the expansion bays but that doesn't mean they have to be on the same deck. I'll get back to you if it works. Anyway on to the reasoning/restrictions.

First off with this I was playing around with the optional external bay's rule (they're inside the hull but applying penalties) from starship operations. This is a transport medium size ship and I started with the deckplan of the tempest from mass effect andromeda as its roughly a similar sized ship. You can see if here if you haven't played the game . . .

1) Interactive Deck Plan: https://guides4gamers.com/mass-effect-andromeda/map/the-tempest/
2) Tour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-m9aon56XI

and the look of the nubian yacht from star wars episode 1

So my restrictions and goals are . . .

1) I must find a spot to put the following expansion bays Survey Sensors, Arcane Laboratory, Science Lab, Tech Lab, Med bay, HAC, Life Boats (I like them), Cargo Hold.

2) I want to find a spot for the following non-expansion bay but ship related places Bridge, Life Support, Server Room (ship computer and coms), Power and propulsion, crew quarters, Galley, Armory (just a room for the party to store weapons and armour not the expansion bay of a similar name).

3) The Cargo Hold has to be easily accessible which pretty much means the bottom of the ship.

4) I want the survey sensors in the point at the front of the ship. It makes sense location wise and allows other areas that need bigger rooms to be situated in the middle bulge.

5) On the tempest plans I want to move the bridge from the front middle of the ship to the top replacing the conference room as this matches the stawars ships look and is an easy change plus it gets the bridge out of that point.

6) Power and propulsion should be at the back of the ship, preferably in the middle though this isn't required. (the engines of the starwas ship are becoming weapons systems and losing those tail spikes).

7) The upper level of the tempests cargo bay is pretty much useless (especially with that massive hole in the middle so its getting a flat floor and becoming area for other rooms to be located in.

8) The lifeboats should be located near an exterior hull so not in the middle back where they'd be between two decks.

9) Crew quarters are 2 luxury (1 person, bath/shower unit and toilet, cupboard, desk) and 2 good (2 people, bunks with privacy seal, shower and toilet per room, desk). This is the look I have in mind https://i.pinimg.com/originals/07/2d/c7/072dc7d5364a28ce39d8fb2f73eafdaa.jp g for the good ones.

10) I want to keep the tech bay near the engines for easy repairs/rebuilding of equipment. Originally it was one room tech bay then the engines but that made it very thin (4x1 rather than 3x2) so when I put the medbay over the cargo bay the tech bay became its on room. I would still prefer it be in the engineering section but size constraints prevent it.

So with that in mind and looking over my placement I think I can make it work. If I swap the front half of each deck, replace one life boat bay with an airlock and have the rear of the HAC with an access tube to work on the survey sensors I get something like this . . .

Note: The B is just the front of living/working section the ship narrows past that to the point and those areas are too small for full rooms or even access tubes past a certain point. These are all in the bulge part of the ship in the middle.

If your looking at the nubian yacht the HAC is in line with that silver blue line at the front and yes its more of a triangle than a square/rectangle though I see the end of it as roughly the size of a normal apartment room across at the narrowest point roughly 3 meters. The sensors are in the point itself.

B: HAC (Is 2 decks because I'm still trying to work out how "tall" a ship is 8 meters? 23 meters? I know its around 90 meters long but depth and width are tricky)
C: Life Boats
D: Corridor
E: Airlock
M: Luxury Quarters
N: Galley
O: Armory
P: Good Quarters
J: Tech Lab
K: Med Bay
L: Power and Propulsion Also spans 2 decks allowing access to all parts of the drift engine and thrusters.
U: Lifts between decks 2 and 3 and 2 and 1. These are more for your sake as they're actually back and there's a corridor where they're indicated but I can't put an asterix beteen other letters easily. Think of the U as corridor and the , where the lift actually is.

Deck 3 (Operations)
B, B, B, C, F, H, H, H, U, R, R, R, R, R, R
B, B, B, C, F, H, H, H, D, R, R, R, R, R, L

B, B, B, C, G, I, I, I, D, S, S, R, R, R, R

C: Life Boats
D: Corridor
L: Power and propulsion
F: Life Support
G: Server Room
H: Arcane Laboratory
I: Science Lab (General)
R: Cargo Hold
S: Decontamination and access to ship (contains lift straight to isolation in med bay if infection detected). This is located in the longer section between the cargo bay and front of the lower deck in the tempest and extends out into the cargo bay. With this turned into an airlock (between D and S) it gives the ship and cargo bay seperate air pressure alloing it to be opened in hostile environemnts (airless asteroids for example) without depressurizing the entire ship). Plus any sick individuals can take a lift straight to the isolation part of medbay without entering the main ship.

At the moment I'm thinking around 90 meters long, 30 meters wide (wingtip to wingtip) and around 23 meters from bottom of hull to top of hull. The wings curve comes in roughly 5 meters leaving me 20 meters across for the rooms inside that slowly narrows to around 3 meters for the HAC. Though I'm still trying to find some starship sizes in that rough range. Oh and in case I didn't say it the spikes on the back of the yacht are gone and those engines are now weapons. I may also be badly off in my estimates of how much the ship narrows.
