Hi everyone!
Ok. I am a little lost about that rule:
Chain Group (Core p. 275)
The armor is so flexible it can bend with a critical hit and absorb some of the blow. Reduce the damage from critical hits by either 4 + the value of the armor’s potency rune for medium armor, or 6 + the value of the armor’s potency rune for heavy armor. This can’t reduce the damage to less than the damage rolled for the hit before doubling for a critical hit.
Please, I'd appreciate if someone could give me a couple of examples about the topic, because I'm not able to fully understand it.
Thanks

A creature attacks you and rolls a critical hit. You're wearing a +1 Chainmail, so you get resistance 5 against the critical hit damage. The results depend on the damage roll:
a) The attacker rolls below 5 damage. Let's say a total of 3 damage. This is doubled because of the crit, so you take an additional 3 damage. You have resistance 5 against tha additional damage only. So that reduces the additonal damage to 0, but doesn't affect the initial 3 damage. You take 3.
b) The attacker rolls 5 or more damage. Let's say 10. This is doubled, by the crit, dealing an additional 10 damage. You have resistance 5 agaisnt that additional damage, reducing it by 5. You take 5.

I have a hypothetical Champion character, named Judith, wearing +1 chain mail (medium chain-group armor with the +1 potency rune). She just leveled up from 6th level to 7th level and, in doing so, she gained the Armor Expertise class feature which grants her the "armor specialization effects for medium and heavy armor." (CR-p108). Since the chain group's armor specialization says, "Reduce the damage from critical hits by... 4 + the value of the armor’s potency rune for medium armor," we will be reducing potential critical hit damage by 4 + 1, for a total of 5.
Judith is being attack by a badger that makes 3 attacks:
1st attack:
- The badger rolls a critical success on a jaws attack, rolling 8 on the damage die. Since critical hits are doubled, the badger deals 16 damage.
- Judith's armor specialization reduces critical hit damage by 5 (16-5=11), so Judith takes 11 damage.
2nd attack:
- Amazingly, the badger rolls another critical success on a claw attack, this time rolling 3 on the damage die. Since critical hits are doubled (3x2=6), the badger deals 6 damage.
- Judith's armor reduces critical hit damage by 5 (6-5=1), BUT only half of the damage (3 damage) came from the critical hit. This means that the damage from this particular attack roll can't be reduced lower than the base damage (3 damage) by the armor specialization; so Judith takes 3 damage.
3rd attack:
- The badger lands one more hit with its claws, but it is not a critical hit. The badger rolls 4 damage.
- Since it is not a critical hit, Judith's armor specialization is not applicable and we ignore it. She takes 4 damage.
