in a previous recruitment post, i asked people what ideas they wanted to see in an adventure. I received some feedback (and started an arguement), and chose three ideas that i think sound interesting and dooable in an adventure.
the three ideas were:
1) A mission impossible style theme
2) A "train" job
3) single class party: Bards
there were some others, but after some thought, i felt that these three were the best.
so here is the official recruitment:
pathfinder 1st edition
20th level
Bards only (archetypes allowed and expected)
30pt buy for attributes
Races: core races and standard races as found on this page
Feats: only official paizo feats, no third party please.
HP Max!
starting gold: 1million gps. there is hard cap of spending 15% (so 150,000gps) on one single item.
Traits: 2
campaign setting: Golarion
There are 48 members of this group in the world. well, there were. Each of your characters, the bards of the group, witnessed the destruction of the group you were assigned to. You are the only survivor of the group
As you rest within the unassuming stronghold of the RoB, the support staff has come across a small entry in their information-gathering network. The entry simply states Grand Mover shall awaken!. The local history buff Alsais Brindlestin, an unassuming elf with a unique quality of photographic memory with a desire to learn about the past has alighted to a scrap of information concerning the grand mover
The grand mover consumes all in its path, seeking to make way from this world into the next, dominating resources, eliminating all in it's path to build it's gate from this world into the next.
for character creation, when you make your PC, please include a paragraph about the death of your group, what the group was going after, and the groups composition.

Since one third of the venue was my idea, I'm eager to take part!
I have a few ideas, but can't yet decide between them:
-Goblin Battle Singer Dawnflower Dervish / Faith Singer (adding some divine SP like Raise Dead or True Seeing))
-some kind of STR tank Arcane Duelist
-a Magician focussing on Empowered Enervation and giving out Counterspells like candy on halloween
-Voice of the Wild with Flame Blade Dervish feat hitting touch ac all day
Relevant question: we'll all need some ranks in Perform, is the Background Skills rule in effect?
Jereru
My ideas right now:
The Buffer: Flag Bearer, Master Performer, etc. Haven't decided about the archetype.
The DPS: Arcane Duelist or Archaeologist (probably the latter for the Luck bonuses) with Starknife (Cha based combat)
I've tried a healer but, other than healing trillions of HP, I couldn't find a way to remove conditions, so we'll have to rely on anyone (or all) of us using UMD. Unless anyone knows a way to get Cleric/Oracle spells...
The Archlich
I'm between a Shadow Puppeteer (via Racial Heritage, focusing on shadowy celestial creatures) and the Dwarven one (assuming I can use the Guided weapon enchantment, I could make it quite decent!). I like these racial archetypes! @GM: would they be okay?
EDIT: Jereru: "Voice of the Wild" gets druid spells.

Dotting!
RIZZENMAGNUS wrote:Bards only (archetypes allowed and expected)What about Prestige classes or Variant Multiclassing, out of curiosity?
if the prestige class is in the flavor of bard, sure. trying to keep to the scope of a single party: Bard style.
variant multiclassing...cant find any info about it on d20pfsrd
Jereru
Jereru: "Voice of the Wild" gets druid spells.
Ah, skipped that detail. A healer with this feature might work, in the sense of removing debuffs. In any case, it might be too narrow focused, and most of the characters will be able to heal and use UMD with ease anyway.
I'm inclined towards The Buffer, though I still have to find something to do while standing in the eye of the tornado, flag in hand. Maybe Healer and Buffer could be merged...
Need to sleep on this. Never actually built a 20th level character before and I fear a small detail missing and any random monster could tear you apart.

RIZZENMAGNUS wrote:variant multiclassing...cant find any info about it on d20pfsrdVariant Multiclassing
ah. ok. no, no variant multiclassing. straight bard or archetypes only.
Jereru
I think I'm leaning towards the Buffer role. Most of the buufs com from Inspire Courage, though, and are mostly martial oriented (+attack, +damage). Do you guys think the group will be martial enough for it to be worthy? I mean, bard is neither too martial nor too caster, so you never know how this is going to end up.
Another question to y'all: Do you think fear would be of any use, or most of the things the party will face are going to be immune? There are some archetypes that boost Dirge of Doom, and the skill unlock for Intimidate could be useful if combined with Dazzling Display, but I'm not sure if it might be a waste.
Dirge Bard + Skill Unlock (Intimidate) to debuff and Flag Bearer + Master Performer for buffing, does it seem cool?
Edit: Still not sure what to do, but I already have my alias! :P

I am building a Dwarven Scholar :)
Nice! A Wis focused character for a change!
What's your plan? Hitting things with other things? Or what?

The Archlich wrote:I am building a Dwarven Scholar :)Nice! A Wis focused character for a change!

I'm planning to have him fully armored and with a shield - combining this archetype with the Palatine Eye one - and focus on cleaving, giving up combat feats to the group and lots of masterpieces. He's true neutral, fully into Pharasma, and by far the least charismatic of the group :)
In terms of role, he's more of a tank - hit points and defenses, in the "quest for immortality".
I will let you guys worry about dealing damage, buffing, debuffing and casting lots of spells. Hehe :)
Jereru
Since the character will be holding a banner with two hands, his selection of Performances will have to be limited to Oratory, Singing, and the like. Also his Masterpieces. For now, I've seen three of them that I like: Dirge of the Torn Sail (make foes flee), Hymn of the Restorative Harmonics (debuff cleansing) and Tales of Twisting Steel (Shield Other, nice to have a shared pool of HP). If there's any jewel you think he should have, please point the way.
Ellioti
Good news, we're forming something.
The Archlich - Dwarfen Scholar tank
trawets71 - Arcane Duelist melee?
Jereru - Dirge Bard Debuff/Buffer
Vrog Skyreaver - archeologist (trapfinder/roag) or Thundercaller (AoE damage dealer)
YoricksRequiem - Arrowsong Ministrel ranged
Ellioti - Dawnflower Dervish melee.
Maybe, but looking at the list, a caster of some sorts would be good.
@Vrog,I believe Thundercaller's damage is pretty disappointing with no mechanical chance to increase it.
Jereru
Archaeologist is super-duper with all his crazy luck bonuses on top of the competence bonuses and morale bonuses because he's in his sororityparty full of bards. Yay! But in any case, if someone knows about bards, that's Vrog, so I trust blindly in whichever build he comes up with.
Vrog, if you feel something is wrong at least in my idea, please tell. Bards and 20th level are both new things to me.
Re: casters, was it a dream or I did read someone wanting to play a Magician? Magicians are cool, boosting CL :D
Oh! We need a name for the party! Like, Bard Sabbath or something :P
Vrog Skyreaver
Okay, so if you want to go the flagbearer/banner of the ancient kings route, you're gonna need to use a longspear.
With a spear, here are a few things you might fight interest:
Take Spear Dancing Style (all 3 feats) and quarterstaff master. Between the two, you can wield a longspear as a 1-handed weapon. That would let you use a shield, too (or keep your hand free for casting).

Totally unrelated to this game, but I was super looking for this route a few weeks ago for using a shield w/ the banner, and couldn't remember it, so thanks!
On topic, I have the first draft of my Arrowsong Minstrel nearly done, gonna start on the background soon, and I'll post it up early for any feedback!
Jereru
Sadly, the banner states it needs to be held two-handed, at least to get the initiative and saves bonuses. It can be useful in other way, though, since I was actually looking for a way to gain finesse with the longspear (since the banner specifically names longspear instead of any Polearm, I can't use an Elven branched spear as was my initial plan).
As for now, my feats are:
-Skill Focus: Kn Religion (Half Elf)
-Improved Initiative
-Flagbearer
-Extra Performance
-Master Performer
-Grand Master Performer
-Weapon Focus
-Dazzling Display
-Disheartening Display
-Signature Skill: Intimidate
-Eldritch Heritage
Maybe if I substitute all Intimidation related feats I might have room for your combo. I'll have to study it.

Archlich here with my Dwarf Bard. Still a work in progress, but much of the basics are already there :)
holy crap dude!! thats some amazing build you have there...
couple questions:
what are your base (pre-magic items, every 4th level add) stats?
How'd you end up with a 30 for wisdom?
Pretty much all the skill totals i get, but im failing to see the stat build for the perception and sense motive totals.

His time in Taldor served him well- Indeed, even now it seems like his life flew by in a flash. Learning the intricacies of acting and performance... Driving his boss mad when he picked up his first job as a clerk serving Abadar... Getting recruited into Bardic college- And soon after, the elusive Lion Blades... Even the worst hardships of his past seemed to pale in comparison to the problems Dr. Thomas Maelstorm was currently struggling with.
His latest stint- And no doubt the highlight of his professional career- had him working with the elite of the elite in an organization simply known as the "Redress of Balance". His crew- the Oathcore- served as liaison between the rulers of Golarions nations. To those who assumed the Leaders of Golarion answered only to their gods and countrymen: Whew boy are they wrong. Each King, Queen and Ruler was free to rule as they wish: But every single one of them knew that any world-ending levels of scheming would earn them a visit from the Oathcore, who would... gently remind the monarch that they needed to tone things down or meet with Pharisma early- And thankfully, most had the good sense to know not to screw with the Redress of Balance.
It was supposed to be a simple mission: There where reports that Razmir was about to ascend to divinity- Yeah yeah, the old coot pretends he's an immortal God. But it was easy to tell that his claims of passing the starstone trials where fake. After all, who do you think controls who takes the starstone trials?
Rambling aside- It was the usual mission: Sneak into his personal quarters without setting of any wards or alerting any personnel, give him a good talking to, and leave the same way they came in. Nothing out of the ordinary for the Oathcore. See, they where true sneakies: It's not like Oathcore hogged all of the stealthiest members of the Redress... It just kinda happened naturally.
Unfortunately, the "Usual mission" turned out rather terribly when the Living God tore open a rift to the nightmare realm of Leng. The Oathcore... was caught completely off guard- Their informants (A separate organization) hadn't reported that the Living God possessed an artifact capable of sundering the material plane. The strange and fell beasts that rushed to the Living God's aid held no trouble for the Oathcore: It was when the terrible, mindbreaking gaze of... some elder god gave a passing glance through the portal that most of the Oathcore slipped into insanity and madness, attacking their own kindred in a vain attempt to stop the nightmares alive. And those that escaped the passing gaze where left to wonder if such a devastating event was circumstance... Or a sign that Razmir had slipped into worship of the ancient ones. A report had to be given: And the few members with sanity to spare urged Dr. Thomas Maelstorm to report back to hq as they fought tooth and nail to simply survive the sudden change in the tide of battle. The Sylph... retreated while his comrades held the line.
Dr. Thomas threw open the doors of hq... only to find the place already in a code red panic. It wasn't long before he would learn that a significant portion of the active agents had been slain in the line of duty. Such devastating attacks on the various crews serving the Redress of Balance couldn't be coincidence... And yet, the only clue to guide the personnel was some mysterious message: That the Grand Mover shall Awaken. Who was this Grand Mover, and did this... entity tug on the strings of fate that left the valiant warriors of the Redress dead or dying? This was a mystery that the remaining survivors would have to solve, with haste!
Playing a human would have worked out so much better for what I wanted to do... But my desire to play a Sylph was stronger. The Negotiator Archetype provides Rogue Talents. The Sneak training allows him to qualify for the Lion Blade Class.
Sacrificing 10 level's of spellcasting sucked and wasn't worth the trade, but as hinted, I am a sucker for the Lion Claw Prestige class. He can make stealth checks behind people which is cool, I guess. 20 minutes a day he enjoys a STR score of 40, which is definitely cool. With Bard buffs he will get sillier.
He can also use Bardic performances to seal deals with a no save Geass, provided the other party agrees to the terms. Could be useful to ensure npc's will stick to their word. If anyone want's to goof around with certain enchantments or illusions he can also inflict a -4 penalty on opponents saves.
Also, any time dirge of despair is up, he can start using Shatter Defenses to boost his damage output up a hair with his sneak attack. Though that's just icing on the cake with his stronk STR.

::Opening with a sick guitar shredding in the background::
Our hero, righting a flaming horse, gallops forward, with the setting sun behind him.
As he approaches, the rider comes into vision: a Half-Orc with a mullet and headband, a leather jacket with the sleeves ripped off, and a toothy smile on his face. A large bow hangs from his back.
Then there is a montage of cool things, like him walking away from explosions and definitely not looking, Shredding on a guitar, making out with barbarian chicks, and arresting bandits.
Eventually, he meets up with other heroes; a paladin wielding a burning sword, a wizard with a sick magical staff and pointy hat, and a cleric that summoned angels.
The group stands around table with a map, and several drawings on it. The group breaks, and our hero goes to the tavern to pick up some chicks. As he was walking back to the inn where the group was meeting, the inn exploded.
Our trailer ends with the hero screaming to the sky...

I don't really have time for another game, especially not a 20th level one, so don't count me in any of your planning or anything, but I need a distraction right now so I'm going to join in the 20th level character building fun.
edit: my non-submission will be a busker/faith singer of Desna going into the evangelist PrC
Giant Halfling
Well, RL reared its ugly head and I'm not going to have time to work up a full build. The core mechanics (in case anyone else wants to play with them) were the divine fighting technique for Desna (which lets you add CHA to hit and damage with starknives) and combat reflexes... the busker's inventive juggling ability lets you threaten out to 40' with thrown weapons, so you get tons of AoOs and can still use your actual turn to cast spells or whatever. I would have taken travel for his faith singer domain, which would have let him use dimension door and teleport each once a day (pretty handy for getting in and out of places). Oh well, I hope all the real applicants have fun with this!
