I asked this question in the thread about the specific AP book which the encounter happens but thought I would ask here.

The adventure notes specifically the Qolok uses its skip between ability to hop out, grab a character, swallow them and then skip between to jump back to the ethereal plane to give them a phobia before dropping them back off on the material plane.

What would you guys rule happens if a character dim doors or otherwise escapes on the ethereal plane?

Are they then stuck there, or do they go back to the material?

Thanks for any help!

I don't recall reading this AP text, but as described this trick shouldn't work at all.

Swallowing a creature does not make it count as "you" for the purposes of adjudicating spells, and skip between acts as ethereal jaunt, which only works on the caster and their equipment. If the qolok attempted to do this, they'd end up on the ethereal plane, leaving their swallowed prey behind on the material plane.

Assuming the qolok has some special dispensation allowing it to work, I'd say the prey would still remain on the ethereal plane until the skip's duration (1 round/level) wore off, at which point they'd end up back on the material plane.

Ah, stupid me I managed to overlook the duration part. Thank you.

I don't know the AP in question, but just to (belatedly) expand on blahpers' response...

As there's a variant of skip between that specifically allows taking a victim along (snatch between, which only Kimenhul (AFAIK) have) I also wouldn't expect this to be possible with the normal skip between.

However, I'd certainly suggest that it seems (to me) reasonable to give Qoloks snatch between, but only for victims they've swallowed

If the monster description specifically mentions it as a tactic, regardless of the rules surrounding the specific ability it should probably do what the author intended. Like normally technically the ability that skip between functions as wouldn't let you take someone else, even if you've swallowed them...but monster abilities that are written to do that probably should regardless of the rules. The writers are often less mastered at the fine details of the rules than the players.
