The relevant skills are Arcana for arcane, Nature for primal, Occultism for occult, Religion for divine, or any of the four for an item that has the magical trait and not a tradition trait. The GM determines the DC based on the item’s level (possibly adjusted depending on the item or situation).

Sorry if that's obvious but what's the DC to cast a spell from a scroll or from a wand?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

According to the list of magic wands, a wand of a 1st-level spell is level 3. Going to level-based DCs, that would be a DC 18.

Scrolls seem to be easier to trick. A 1st-level scroll is a level 1 item, so the level-based DC would be 15.

It's not really complicated, but the rules are kind of scattered around in the book so you have to flip.

Great, thanks a lot! Yeah I wasn't sure where to look, it's a little bit all over the place indeed.

Sorry these links don't help.
Where is a table for this?

Unless the item is higher level than you are, or you didn't max your casting skill, it's not the DC you want to worry about anyways.

It's the action cost.

You daw out a wand of fireball, spend an action on Trick Magic Item, and then you cast...nothing. you don't have enough actions left to complete the two-action spell.

You already have a scroll of lightning bolt in hand. You activate Trick Magic Item and cast the spell. But wait. The party's fighter is in the way and you don't have enough actions to move to a better attack position.

I'm constantly seeing people forget about the steep action cost of Trick Magic Item.

Not sure what happened with those links. They look like they should be right, but they don't go to the table directly.

Level-based DC table

Very strange. But that link works.

This post is from 2020, and those links do not include https:// before the website url, so likely it messes up when trying to add that to the front of the url and adds everything after the first ? again (example, the link to the scrolls ends in "?Category=52" but when you click it it ends in "?Category=52&Category=52")

The point is, always include https:// when you link to things on the internet.
