¿How do you manage this situation? Attack while jumping

Rules Discussion

In the group a Giant Barbarian was in the top of a watchtower (6 meters high) killing an archer. The enemy miniboss (warrior) flanked the Sourcerer of the party under that tower.

In his turn the Barbarian killed the archer with his first action and then he said: with my next 2 actions I jump in to the enemy (he was adjacent to him but of course 6m higher) and atack with the waraxe while I am falling.

GM: you will get fall damage.

Barbarian: I know, but he will get even more when my waraxe impacts on his head.

¿How do you manage that?

Sounds cool. Let him roll Athletics/Acrobatics with a low dc to ensure he falls deliberately in such a way to hit properly and then one attack roll.

If he rolled a crit on the Athletics I'd make the target flat footed for his melee attack.

The Barbarian would take the appropriate fall damage (which in this case would be 10 damage) and I would probably let them make an attack as part of the fall before becoming prone from the fall. I wouldn't give them any bonuses or penalties to their attack or damage.

I would probably consider additional damage as per the "Falling on a creature" rule on page 464 to account for the additional monumentum.

CRB page 464:
Falling on a Creature
If you land on a creature, that creature must attempt a DC 15 Reflex save. Landing exactly on a creature after a long fall is almost impossible.

Critical Success The creature takes no damage.
Success The creature takes bludgeoning damage equal to one-quarter the falling damage you took.
Failure The creature takes bludgeoning damage equal to half the falling damage you took.
Critical Failure The creature takes the same amount of bludgeoning damage you took from the fall.

I like Ubertron's idea. The barbarian jumps down, takes falling damage (and can take any actions that might mitigate it) and then can make an attack against the enemy before falling prone from damage (assuming they took any). The enemy takes extra damage based on the Falling on a Creature rules.

There are a lot of feats that involve jumping which say you fall after your next action, or next strike if it is part of the activity.

Grand Lodge

There is a 8th level barbarian feat for that which allows exactly that action:

Sudden Leap - CRB 91 - 8th level
You swing at a foe while mid-leap. Make a Leap, High Jump, or Long Jump and attempt one melee Strike at any point during your jump. Immediately after the Strike, you fall to the ground if you’re in the air, even if you haven’t reached the maximum distance of your jump. If the distance you fall is no more than the height of your jump, you take no damage and land upright.
When attempting a High Jump or Long Jump during a Sudden Leap, determine the DC using the Long Jump DCs, and increase your maximum distance to double your Speed.

So with Sudden Leap this action is allowed.

The alternatives:
a) He steps (5 foot - 1 action) This then triggers Falling - CRB 463. Assuming 6 m is 20 feet he will take 10 damage and fall prone. He can then attack from prone.

b) He leaps. This is equivalent to a movement horizontally of 10 foot. He will still fall at the end of the leap (20 foot down) and everything of a) happens. If he has 30 feet+ movement this gets him even 15 foot far.

c) He steps / leaps deliberately into the same square as the enemy. He will land on the enemy who needs to make a DC15 reflex save or take damage from the barbarian landing on him. The barbarian is still prone and attacks from prone afterwards.

So in effect he can step/leap and do an attack at -2

Allowing the strike while falling (without the feat) would cheapen the feat. I do acknowledge that the situation makes it easy as no jump check needed - but leap is pretty powerful and soon you might find yourself defending other situations. two towers with 15 feet inbetween - assuming 30+ movement - leap 10 across - 'land' in the square adjacent to tower 2 - attack - then fall down - and suddenly you allowed an 8th level feat for free through the backdoor.
