In the real world, mist can be caused by non weather events (eg, a waterfall).

Forget magic completely for a second. Would Storm Born let you see through the mist caused by a waterfall? I'd claim not.

So why would it work against magical mist?

The charhide goblin reference is irrelevant. It grants fire resistance. It does NOT have any words in the description remotely comparable to "caused by weather".
