Forceful weapon and swipe

Rules Discussion

Hi there,

Given the current situation:

- Character with a forceful + swipe weapon
- Character with the swipe attack feat
- 2 enemies in range.

I will then roll

1d20 + my bonus + 1 circumstance bonus for both attacks.

So 1d20 + X+1 for my first target and 1d20 +X+1 for my second target.

I the second target will also get bonus dmg because the forceful trait, so more damage than the first target. Right?

With the Swipe attack, you make only one attack roll. It's just one attack that hits both targets.

So yes you get the circumstance bonus from sweep on it but forceful doesn't get added, if it's you first attack. If you did a strike before the Swipe, forceful would get added to damage on both targets.

Great!

Thank you.

The more I get into this system the more i realize i should have made a warrior instead of a champion.

Also, the shifting rune seems to be so powerful in the right hands, with the right talents and eventually a hugh athletic skill.

Ah, another one question:

Given the same situation, what about a throwing hatchet which scores a critical strike on an enemy which has somebody next to him?

Quote:
Choose one creature adjacent to the initial target and within reach. If its AC is lower than your attack roll result for the critical hit, you deal damage to that creature equal to the result of the weapon damage die you rolled (including extra dice for its potency rune, if any). This amount isn’t doubled, and no bonuses or other additional dice apply to this damage.

You won't be able to use the swipe attack feat, since there's no melee attack, but the rest should work.

The other enemy within the range of the throwed hatchet, and adiacent to the main target.

Has to be within reach, so it won't work unless they are right next to you.

i would rule so, too. If you happen to get a crit with a thrown hatchet, you can have that fun. :)

Or else the hatchet, which has the thrown trait, won't do anything on crit.

I mean, it will lose the point the critical specialization. And there would be no reason for the thrown trait.

Also, as we can see, all the other weapons which can be thrown can apply their critical effect. So they simply didn't realize that possibility.

While I'd personally probably allow the effect, I don't think this logic necessarily holds up. The thrown trait and critical specialization effects are useful traits independently, even without working at the same time. It is important to remember that being a ranged weapon isn't the only thing, or even the main thing, the hatchet has going for it. It is also an agile d6 weapon with the sweep trait. It is extremely versatile weapon for a strength based character with better accuracy than a shortsword when sweeping.

I had a player running a level 1 Amiri fighting goblins warriors, and she saw no reason to pull out the large bastard sword and become sluggish/clumsy. She just took her hatchet and went to town, as she could still one shot them on minimum damage rolls. She could take out one, then catch another nearby with sweep or throw the hatchet at one out of reach. Not getting the critical specialization effect on a throw would still leave it an extremely good weapon for her character.

Well the agile trait will remain, and there is no point in discussing this.

Because of the low dice it is reasonable for a weapon to have the agile trait.

So the point would simply be the critical specialization not usable whike you throw your weapon ( if another enemy would be missing it is ok for it to fail the requirements ).

Any other weapon with the ranged trait has its specialization whichwhich Aso work if the weapon is thrown.

However, the rules are clear and currently we are stuck with a critical specialization which doesn't work, but maybe and errata could consider allowing us to use it that way too.

Well, on paper, it can apply, but very hardly. Anyway, axe critical specialization is very hard to trigger. Certainly one of the worst specializations you can get unless you play a character with a very good ability at attracting attention.
