Liberty's Edge

There are no 4th level necromancy spells that I can find. That means that the necromancer has a spell slot forever open. What did I miss?

The ability to heighten one of the earlier spells to 4th slot. Not that they are competetive, but at least it is an option to fill it.

That you can heighten lower level spells, like Vampiric Touch, by preparing them in higher level slots.
Edit: Ninja'd by 4 seconds...

That you prepare a 3rd or lower one there until they release 4th level spells. So not forever open at least...

Nothing, there are a few gaps and shortages at various levels for various schools. Necromancer has it the worse and has to put a heightened spell in that bonus slot.

Liberty's Edge

Heightening is an option I suppose but looking there are only 2 spells that can heighten into that slot. I mean spending a 4th level slot to get 6 more hp with false life seems a bit of a waste.

Also where is our create undead spells? The only one close I see is level 2 bind undead.

I guess I don't understand the purpose of necros in PF2. I was making a villain for my campaign guess I'll have to change him. Hmmm.

Thanks for the replies.

There are no regular create undead spells, there is a ritual though.

Create Undead ritual on pg 411.

Create Undead is a Ritual and not a spell (rituals are after spells and Create Undead is on page 411)

There can only be so many spells in the core rule book. They actually had to find space to make martial classes this time, after all.

Meaning spells don’t need to be burnt on creating the minions as far as I can tell

NPCs don't need spells to explain how they have undead minions.

The fun one is that you can constantly create undead, and kill the results if they're not up to your standards. Pretty good way to create permanent minions. Though it is time consuming.

You can also keep some of the failures as fodder to control with Bind Undead or just leave in an area to attack intruders outside of your direct control.

Ah okay missed the ritual thing, thanks.

If you're looking for a good spell to put in your 4th level slot, Bind Undead is not a bad one as of right now and Grim Tendrils gains some pretty decent bonuses from being Heightened.

Really, I think it's remarkable there are as many Necromancy Arcane spells as there is.
This is definitely one of those areas where "tradition/inertia" led them to ignore Essence/Tradition distinctions.

IMHO, they could have gone different direction by making Necromancy Specialist more of an alt-class
by adding a bunch of Necromancy spells to list that would normally not be on general Wizard list.
Those could even have remained as counting as "Divine" so wouldn't work with Arcane-only effects.

But as said, Heighten is your necro-friend.
