So, was Pathfinder Second Edition’s launch a ‘success’?

I sure hope it was! Since the gaming world has changed so drastically in the past 10 years, I hope Paizo was able to parlay that into satisfactory numbers. The Core Rulebook and Bestiary are definitely quality products!

It's probably impossible to know for sure, but I can say that at one point over the weekend, the Core Rulebook made it to #53 of Amazon's top 100 books, so that's probably nice.

Not even been a week. It seems to have sold decently going on amazon stats, but how public opinion goes and whether it continues to sell well is a completely other matter.

We will see within the next couple of months as people crawl through the rules and get actual experience whether the launch of the new system succeeds or flounders.

Pretty sure it won't be a 4e like some of the people on this forum are crying though.

It's impossible to tell at this point.

I mean, obviously it's not a flop yet. But it's only been five days. A movie can have an excellent opening weekend but then drop off dramatically thereafter. On the other hand, sometimes sales are sustained longer than expected.

Ask again in a year. I personally bought two Core books, two Bestiaries, a DM screen, and the Core PDF. And I'm someone who was pretty turned off by the playtest. It's really unclear if PF2 will find a place at our table, but a couple hundred of my dollars went to Paizo. Right now I look like a success story. But will I be buying anything but adventures in six months? Ask me in six months.

I think Gencon sales can be a good indicator.

Starfinder for example killed it.

I think its a very strong game and I prefer it over 1E but I don't think it will have a chance to come anywhere near 5e for the simple fact of brand recognition.

Best case scenario for Paizo is that they can get back some lost ground that 1E has lost over last few years in sales numbers slowly dwindling.

Well for my part once I tried the playtest and had a subpar experience I canceled all my subs except for Adventure Paths.

In exchange I bought the Core PDF and hoped for fixes.

Play-wise I am trying to decipher PF2’s “adventuring day” meta. With many abilities being seeming to have durations up to 1 hr...and then with a 24 hour cooldown, it seems they want a 10 minute to 1 hr dungeon raid? Not sure.

Once we get through a few adventures we’ll have a better feel. Still hopeful.

It doesn't sound like the game sold out at GenCon, unlike Starfinder that sold out on Day One:
http://www.enworld.org/forum/content.php?4391-Starfinder-s-A-Resounding-Suc cess!-Sells-Out-On-First-Day-of-Gen-Con

However, they also brought a LOT more copies:

https://twitter.com/loganbonner/status/1157287739114565634?s=20

A quick count suggests easily twice as many copies.
At first glance it looks as if less than half have sold, so it would appear PF2 was less of a hit at the Con than Starfinder was.

However this is also just the first day...
People might have been avoiding the Paizo booth that first day due to the usual lines. While the first day was likely the best day for moving copies, they likely ended up selling more than Starfinder by day 2 or 3.

I think Paizo knows better than to set their expectations at outselling 5e. No matter how good of an RPG system you make, it's not going to outsell 5e.

Just getting back into second place would be a huge win for the system.

Nope. But that was by design. We literally took more books than we could actually sell given the number of cashiers that we had there. I didn't want a repeat of the Starfinder release where we ran out on Friday. So we took quite a lot. And sold more than we have ever sold of anything at GenCon. So it was a huge success for us.

Folks, every metric we have points to the launch week being a big hit. Only yltime will tell how it all shakes out, but the game is off to a big start!

That is due in huge part to all of you, giving the game a look and hopefully to your game table in the coming days!

We had a great weekend at Gen Con and are all rather exhausted, but I can say this with certainty. We cannot wait to see what adventures you have with this game!

I assumed as much.

Selling out seems cool on paper. Especially on Day One. But then you remember that a lot of people show up late to the con or don't shop until later and walk away empty handed, which gives a bad impression.

A quick count of books still *implies* they sold less than Starfinder. But, again, Day One. And that's not counting the Collector's Editions.

It is too soon to tell.

I'll also add that the picture from Logan's twitter only shows the Paizo booth. They setup a completely separate booth outside the ballroom where all the Society games were going on that only sold PF2 items and it sold out of a few items the first day like The Fall of Plaguestone.

I should note... we restocked the wall during the show.

To add some more anecdotal evidence to the pile...

My FLGS had sold out of copies of the Standard CRB as of Saturday afternoon. My fiance ended up buying a Deluxe edition just because he wanted a physical copy.

Well, It sold well enough that it sold out in every swedish store I'v checked that sells gaming stuff.. Still waiting for them to restock so I can buy it, As I dont like trying to import things myself and rely on stores in country that sells it.

In addition to Lisa and Jason's comments, I thought this post from James was interesting:

Selling out may make for some snappy ad copy, but it's a terrible thing to do, because that means you didn't make enough to supply demand and miss out on potential sales and annoy customers. Selling out of Starfinder at Gen Con a few years ago made it easier for us to pack up the booth at the end of the show, but it caused a lot of frustration and aggravation and second guessing and other ripple effects down the road that would have been avoided had we not sold out.

A book doesn't have to sell out in order to be "successful".

We don't make our actual sales numbers public, and I'm not at Gen Con to see how much of what we brought to the show sold (and the show's still going, too)... but from what I can see it seems to be selling quite well.

That's great to hear. As one of those who were quite vocal in wishing for a new edition, I can already say that I like a lot of the new stuff. So here's to the hope that this will be a great fundament for stories to be created for years to come.

By the way, my first adventure with the new rules is trying to do a conversion of an PF 1 multiclass NPC (Aubrin the Green from Ironfang Invasion) to 2E. ;)

Finished my first (quick) read through of the Core Book yesterday.

Personally, I think it is a success and fixed all the things I did not care for in PF1, while still keeping plenty of customization, options and uniqueness (From PC side of the table and GM side). Alot of the new rules and systems have inspired me quite a bit, and I can see 2e being my new go to system for many years to come. :)

Looking forward to running some games and getting deep into the system.

I had wondered. I figured you would have, but didn't want to make more assumptions than I was already making...

I'm happy for your success and am glad that Paizo is hope Pathfinder 2 find a lot of fans.
