PC with natural attacks... Strong Jaw vs Enlarge Person?

Advice

I know that strong jaw can be used on animal companions and stuff, but for a PC like a barbarian, bloodrager, or alchemist with existing natural attacks. What value does this spell have over something like Enlarge Person, especially in the mid/late levels?

Yes the -1 to hit, and -1 AC, and being bigger, heavier, etc.
But Enlarge person counter by increase melee weapon dice by one or two steps(depending on starting die), and grants +2 STR and a natural reach. And it's only a 1st level spell for the same duration.

When most of your reliable damage comes from mods, what major value does strong jaw have? Am i missing something?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Umm they stack so you can use both.

You can have 1 'virtual' size increase. and 1 actual size increase, so Strong Jaw and Enlarge can be used at the same time to increase your damage die twice.

Three times strong jaw is two increases and enlarge person is one.

Ahhh I see.

Does this work because they are simply transmutation school spells and not necessarily polymorph effects?

I was under the impression that any kind of size change effects didn't stack, but that might only be limited to polymorph stuff.

Strong jaw isn't actually increasing your size though its just making you deal damage as if you were two sizes larger.

Sometime back the devs made a clarification that you can have 1 actual and 1 virtual size increase (it's nowhere in the rulebooks, it's was stated in FAQ).

Since enlarge person actually changes your size, and strong jaw makes you deal more damage as if you were larger (virtual) both work together.

Regardless of stacking, the advantage of strong jaw is that it increases your damage two sizes. Enlarge person only increases it 1. Strong jaw doesn’t make you bigger, and so is better if you’re in tight quarters and being large would be a problem. Enlarge person is good if you have room and having reach is helpful.

If you have time, then as noted, they stack and you can cast both.

Very good. Thanks everybody.
