Archetype rules

Hey. I'm running a Tiefling Alchemist, and I had a question about Archetypes in PFS. Can you take a level in an Archtype for a Class you already have levels in, and how would that character's existing abilities be effected?

Specifically, I'm looking at Internal Alchemist.

We have come up against some rather nasty gas traps and creatures, and there is a hint of some possible water adventures coming up.

If the archetype only changes class features you don't have yet, for example changes a 4th level ability and you're only 2nd) then you're fine just to add it. If it changes abilities you already have then you need to use the retraining rules, which cost PP & Go and require Ultimate Campaign.

The rules for this can be found in Ultimate Campaign. Here is a link to the rules on the Archives of Nethys.

To gain an archetype that replaces standard class abilities you already have, you must spend 5 days for every alternate class feature you would add, subtract, or replace by taking that archetype. At the end of the training period, you lose the standard class features and replace them with the archetype’s alternate class features (if any).

Note that you don’t have to use the retraining rules to take an archetype if your class level is low enough that the archetype doesn’t modify any of your current class abilities. For example, if you’re a 1st-level fighter who wants the archer archetype, that archetype doesn’t replace any class abilities until fighter level 2, so you don’t need to use the retraining rules at all—once you reach 2nd level, you can just decide to take the archer archetype.

The PFS-specific rule is that each day of retraining costs 1 Prestige and 100 gp per current character level.

In the case of an internal alchemist, you'll definitely need to retrain at least one alternate class feature, as Breath Mastery replaces Throw Anything at 1st level.

Note: if you are still 1st level, ask your GM about the "free rebuild" PFS allows for 1st level characters.
