The Graveyard -- deceased in Return of the Runelords

Return of the Runelords

Update: My GM was kind enough to raise both myself and a few other players.

In the spirit of the same post from other threads, opening up a new thread for those that have passed on during Return of the Runelords.

Character name: Valentina Luisana
Class and level: Ranger (Freebooter) level 4
Description: Died while facing Corstela within the mansion of the Order of the Resplendent Peacock. Died by spell cast from Baraket that killed her and half the party.

Before our next session, the GM decided that the ability used by the NPC was not used correctly so he wants to reply the scene. So, we have a reprieve till this upcoming Friday.

I'll keep you posted.

Erm, without saying anything spoiler-y, having the DM replay the scene would be wise - he is correct that Baraket was not adjudicated correctly first time through.

Name: Ice Cracking in the Sunlight
Race: Merfolk
Classes/levels: Bard (dirge bard, sound striker) 6
Adventure: It Came From Hollow Mountain
Location: the Gryphine inn, Magnimar
Catalyst: assassination
The Gory Details: After multiple attempts on their life, the PCs went to bed in the Gryphine without overly tightening their security. Dith-ka, the bugbear assassin stealthily climbed through the window, snuck next to Ice and coup-de-grace her, killing her outright (less than 10 on the DC 24 Fort save).

Before the end of the night, Ice was raise from the dead at the Temple of Abadar, with costs entirely covered by the Sihedron Council as an apology for having booked them in the Gryphine in the first place.

Understand completely and thanks for keeping it spoiler-free.

Name: Akkumsah
Race: Oread
Classes/levels: Monk 7/Occultist 1
Adventure: Runeplague
Location: outside the Gecko
Catalyst: Xanesha, of course
The Gory Details: The group was prepared for Xanesha's ghost, or so they thought. But a couple of attacks with a corrupting touch and Vital Strike (20d6) were too much for Akkumsah, who drop down to –15 hp. Her Constitution of 14 meant that she died on the spot. The cleric of Cayden Cailean used breath of life a second letter, as she was slowly drifting down to the Magnimarian Bay's waters below.

Xanesha is as deadly as she ever was, use with caution!

I'm kind of surprised you managed to survive even two books with merfolk ._. I mean, thats long time on land on aquatic race

Scarab Sages

My group is heading to the Gecko next session. I have no idea how they are going to survive, even kited out with ghost touch weapons. I think their best best is the party necromancer and command undead.

Oh the merfold is doing perfectly fine. Fins to feet sorts it out without most of the time.

My group dealt with Xanesha thanks to the dirge bard merfolk who is able to use mind-affecting spells on undead. It took her something like 5 or 6 attempts but she eventually landed a terrible remorse that allowed everyone to pile up on poor Xanesha.

Hopefully, your PCs think about fleeing if it becomes too much for them. Their obvious benefit is that they all know Xanesha is around and is a ghost, so they can come buffed to the gills.

Name: Quasin
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Witch (Ashifta, Time Patron) 8
Adventure: Runeplague
Location: outside the Gecko
Catalyst: Xanesha
The Gory Details: The group decided to approach the Gecko from the top of the Irespan, and rappel down on ropes. After Quasin, being the only flier, as well as the one who misfortuned Xanesha became the number one target. One attack and failed save later he was well past his -Con.

Resolution

Later in the adventure:
As Quasin died, time seemed to stand still. A 5 year old girl holding what appeared to be a broken hourglass appeared before him speaking "You did not die here chrononaught." Time rewound itself, to just before Xanesha hit him, and instead she missed. The fight eventually ended with the Bard with a Bow reigning down (ghost Salt) arrows, and the Bloodrager bashing her with his Ghost Touch (courtesy of the Occultist) Earthbreaker.

I've decided that since I'm upping the difficulty of most encounters that the Steward's visits will all be in the form of "save a PC from death" as per book 4 and they get one per book. Although this encounter in particular was played exactly as written.

For the record: I am quite certain that Vital Strike and Corrupting Touch are incompatible, and thus my death illegal.

Then again, it is very much in character for Xanesha to cheat in order to kill PCs...

The Gory Details: After seeing that piercing damage and bludgeoning damage were ineffective, the sword (slashing) wielding barbarian threw alchemist fire on the ooze, causing it to explode and burn. Seraphine stepped up to heal a front line fighter, triggering an attack of opportunity, crit threat, confirm, 2x HP took past negative con and Seraphine was a smoldering lump on the ground.

Wow, those were some grisly deaths. Were both of them your characters or are you running the game?

Zethorn wrote:

I am a player, but neither were my characters. The deaths are spread across two different players. I play a Halfling swashbuckler (the front line fighter in question that needed healing).

Name: Szarlej
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Cleric of Cayden Cailean 9
Adventure: Runeplague
Location: Kendall Plaza, during the Crimson Festival
Catalyst: The Peacock Phoenix
The Gory Details: While the rest of the party was fighting Peacock cultists down below, Szarlej flew high above the crowd and decided to take on the Peacock Phoenix single-handedly. A few bite and claw attacks later, Szarlej was very, very dead.

(The rest of the party paid to have him raised from the dead before the day was out.)

Name: Chiron
Race: Tiefling
Class/levels: Gloomblade Fighter 5
Adventure It Came Grom Hollow Mountain
Location: The Varisian Gulf
Catalyst: Death by Dunkleosteus
The Gory Details: Chiron and the party bard were tasked with investigating the rudder of the ship after a storm had damaged it. After a few moments, he got attacked by the Dunkleosteus, which bypassed a brace from Chiron due to it's huge size and Siphoning Bite. After a successful bite and grab, Chiron switched his Gloomblade to a heavy pick, stabbed the Dunkleosteus in the eye (crit), and nearly took it out in one shot. Unfortunately, thanks to the difficulty of fighting things underwater, the rest of the party wasn't able to do enough damage or stun the creature before it got to swallow our tiefling hero, killing him in the process.

Name: Azriel
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Druid 12
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: The Dungeon of Fiery Fury
Catalyst: Dhanishti
The Gory Details: The group had tricked the asuras at the entrance of the prison into believing they were inspectors checking on the prison level. But when they eventually met inquisitor Dhanishti, who was managing the prison and associated torture chambers, she saw right through their bluff and called for the heroes' capture. Between the many attacks of the jailers and the many attacks of the inquisitors (along with their wide crit range), the druid Azriel eventually fell from multiple scimitar and kukri cuts.

He was promptly brought back to life by the cleric with a timely breath of life.

(And that's not counting the death that was prevented by the steward of Stethelos a minute later.)

Name: Akkumsah
Race: Oread
Classes/levels: Monk 11/Occulist 1
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: The Vault of Crimson Longing
Catalyst: a big rock hurled by a big giant
The Gory Details: The group stumbled on the two fire giants arguing with each other but these quickly focussed on the intruders. The battle was short and brutal and Akkumsah saw her strength quickly dwindling. After she dropped the first giant, the bard Ice protected her by turning her invisible. But that wasn't enough and one of the molten rocks hurled by the fire giant crushed her against the wall… would have crushed her against the wall, actually, because Pharasma intervened and melted the rock before it reached Akkumsah.

(She benefited from Pharasma's divine favor cast upon the group after they took care of the Pharasmins remains one level above.)

Scarab Sages

Name: Rozen
Race: Sea Elf
Classes/levels: Wizard 13/Archmage 1
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: The Dungeon of Fiery Fury
Catalyst: Dhanishti
The Gory Details: Having started a fight with every Asura in the dungeon at once Rozen, the squishy necromancer, decided to run up and vampiric touch Dhanishti. One full attack later, she was very very dead.

Fortunately the Keeper of Stethelos showed up to undo that little hiccup in the time stream, leaving Rozen only unconscious. Fortunately the rest of the party Killed the remaining Asura before Dhanishti got a second chance to kill her.

Name: Akkumsah
Race: Oread
Classes/levels: Monk 12/Occulist 1
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: Xanderghul's Resurrection Chamber
Catalyst: Two golems and a Mage's Sword
The Gory Details: After the party was done chatting with the resurrected Xanderghul, and vice-versa, discussion quickly changed to violence. Frontliner Akkumsah bore nearly all the attacks from the two golems and the Mage's Sword cast by Xanderghul. The flurry of attacks brought her beyond the gates of death within a few rounds, but the party's cleric was able to revive her immediately with a Breath of Life, and shortly thereafter the tide of the battle turned.

Name: Kaat
Race: Aasimar
Classes/levels: Striker 4
Adventure: Secret of Roderic's Cove
Location: The Underflume
Catalyst: Wanting to resolve things peacefully

Name: Adam Altin
Race: Aphorite
Classes/levels: Dragoon 4
Adventure: Secret of Roderic's Cove
Location: The Underflume
Catalyst: Wanting to resolve things peacefully

The Gory Details: Having swiftly got into a scrap in the ballroom they defeated several foes before calling for peace and asking to see their boss expecting Jana but getting Mozamer. He offered them a chance to join him or die, and they took offence to that restarting the battle. Through a horrific bout of bad luck Kaat proved incapable of even touching Mozamer and was swiftly cut down by his halberd, Adam persevered longer using his healing to sustain the group long enough to slay the rest of the foes, but even their combined might proved to be not enough to defeat the sinspawn and he was brutally slain defending them, at which point the rest of the party changed their tune and took the deal.

Scarab Sages

Name: Cora Dove
Race: Half Elf
Classes/levels: Occultist (Occult Historian) 14/Mythic (Guardian) 1
Adventure: The City Outside of Time
Location: White Death's Diadem
Catalyst: Stealing from Incariax

The Gory Details: Having snuck through Frozen Tears, one shot Lyraesia (well 2 shots, a Finger of Death and a Disintegrate), stolen her amulet, and infiltrated White Death's Diadem, the group was feeling very confident. They debated stealing the 50,000g worth of gemstones from Incariax, and decided they would wait until the last minute of the ritual to do so. With 1 minute left they pried out the gems. With the PCs being mythic I decided to have Incariax show up a bit different than the defaul scenario and rolled a d10 to determine how many rounds would be left in the ritual when he showed up, and got a 6. The PCs had to survive for 6 rounds while their witch finished the ritual. Cora, did an admirable job holding his attention for the first 4 rounds. Round 5, having realized that they had put over 400 points of damage into him, they decided to pause the ritual, and try and take him out instead. The next round Cora finally fell to Incariax's blows, fortunately she had Pharasma's boon, and much to Incariax's confusion, she ignored his fatal blow. The round after, they finished him off, absorbing his essence and hitting mythic rank 2.

Scarab Sages

Name: Rozen
Race: Sea Elf
Classes/levels: Wizard (Necromancer) 15/Mythic (Archmage) 2
Adventure: The City Outside of Time
Location: The Palace Miasmoria
Catalyst: Disintegrated by Belimarius

The Gory Details: After making an alliance with the Rune Giants to storm Belimarius's palace, the PCs snuck past the guards, and ambushed her in her court. After a long fought battle featuring lots of Prismatic spells, many reflected spells and attacks (Rozen managed to Polar Ray herself earlier), and unfortunate Maze (the bloodrager rolled a nat 20 to escape almost immediately) Belimarius is beginning to get fed up, and so double taps Rozen with disintegrates (I gave her MR1 so as not to get instagibbed by the PCs). Fortunately the party bloodrager finished her off next round, and scooped Rozen into a bag. Fortunately they have scrolls of True Resurrection from waaaay back in book 3.

Name: The Shaper
Race: Human I think
Classes/levels: Arcanist 11
Adventure: Runeplague
Location: Sailing to Xin
Catalyst: Cetus is teh broken

The Gory Details: We were a bit behind in XP as we sailed to Xin to perform the ritual. One of our players had recently acquired the Falling Star ship and was posting pictures of how cool it is. Our DM decided to do a couple of encounters to make the trip exciting and give us some XP. Enter a brine dragon allied with a Cetus. We are a 6 person party and level 11. But this thing is ridiculous. I would argue under CR given that its abilities are specifically designed to take away the spells that make fighting it possible. After the cetus jumped a paltry 120 feet in the air from under water (note that it can jump 1200), it bit the hapless Shaper in twain, dispelling his fly, and dragging him back into the ocean. Fortunately they have scrolls of True Resurrection from waaaay back in book 3. Okay, not way back. Like a mere four sessions prior.

We understand this is not 'technically' part of the AP, but I put it up anyway.

Name: Ice Cracking in the Afternoon Sunlight
Race: Merfolk
Classes/levels: Bard (dirge bard, sound striker) 17
Adventure: Rise of New Thassilon
Location: See below
Catalyst: See below

The Gory Details: I'm posting some extra details for this one because it was my character and I thought it was pretty hilarious.

After going through the sarcophagus teleporter in Zinlun's Tomb, the bard found herself alone, being attacked by Zinlun the Awakened Demilich and his Fossil Golem minions, with the rest of the party unable to come through to help her because the lid was off the sarcophagus on her side and she was unable to get to it.

In the epic solo battle that followed, she was hit with Reverse Gravity, Glitterdust, Mage's Disjunction, three Disintegrates, three Fireballs, three set of Magic Missiles, four attempts to devour her soul, and innumerable bite attacks from the Fossil Golems. Thanks to a string of lucky saves, a Greater Aegis of Recovery, two Heal scrolls, and a whole lot of spells, magic items, and bardic performance, the combat ended when, burdened with seven negative levels and reduced to single digit hit points, she slew Zinlun.

Then, the very next day, in the very next encounter at the entrance to the court in the Boneyard, with her full party at her side, fully healed, fully buffed, and newly raised to 17th level, a Sinister Sphinx leapt off a pedestal and killed her in the surprise round.

Name: Azriel
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Druid (Menhir Savant) 17
Adventure: Rise of New Thassilon
Location: The Courtroom in the Boneyard
Catalyst: Grappling the High Justice

The Gory Details: While battling the High Justice, Azriel, in the form of a large tiger, leapt upon the enemy and began grappling him. The High Justice took advantage of the fact that this conveyed the grappled condition on Azriel as well to devour his soul.

Both Azriel and Ice, incidentally, are fine now thanks to the party cleric.

Love this thread.

Name: Marco Bandini
Race: Human
Class/level: Swashbuckler 7
Adventure: It Came from Hollow Mountain
Location: Thybidos' Humiliation, Throne Room
Catalyst: Many, many things, but ultimately the Ivory Sentinel
The Gory Details:

The story of Marco's death starts all the way back in Book 1 upon finding Baraket, the sword of pride. I played it a bit like "the one ring" where Marco, having some poor luck with Will saves, insisted on wielding the rapier sans gauntlet, with Baraket itself seeking the true champion of pride, and weakening Marco in the process. Marco's player did a great job of playing up his new-found prideful nature. I reduced the penalty a bit to make it less horrible to wield the sword. Regardless, a string of bad saves lead Marco down an spiraling path to his demise.

First, he gave up the sword to Viralane after being charmed by her.
The party then had to chase the sword to Hollow Mountain, where reacquired it again from Viralane and her fellow cultists. He then failed a suggestion save to pull the gemstone from the Chaos Beast statue in the Gauntlet of Fury. Next he failed his save to resist being cursed by said Chaos Beast. The party, having no way to remove curse quite yet, had to watch him slowly transform into a Chaos Beast, draining his wisdom to 1. The next day the party cured him of his curse, but Marco remained a shell of himself, with no way to get rid of the wisdom drain.

The party ultimately decided to move on through the dungeon, hoping there might soon be some respite, but none came. Marco suffered from some constitution drain fighting Thybidos' family wraiths, after one of them crit him, reducing him to a total HP pool of 20. When it came to fighting the ivory sentinels in the final encounter of the dungeon, Marco finally fell to a failed fortitude save on their poisonous claws; The poison (con damage) plus the claw damage was enough to kill him after a couple of rounds.

We've had an exciting couple of sessions.

Name: Ice Cracking in the Afternoon Sunlight
Race: Merfolk
Classes/levels: Bard (dirge bard, sound striker) 17
Adventure: Rise of New Thassilon
Location: The Well of All
Catalyst: The Well of All
The Gory Details: With a nobility of spirit eclipsed only by her greatness of heart, Ice voluntarily sacrificed her very life at the Well of All in order to fix the timeline. Her decision was helped by the fact that Pharasma's blessing gave her a Get-Out-Of-Death-Free card.

Name: Laslo Grigorovich Budynek
Race: Tiefling
Classes/levels: Alchemist (beastmorph, vivisectionist) 17
Adventure: Rise of New Thassilon
Location: Beneath Windsong Abbey
Catalyst: Yamasoth and a falling ceiling
The Gory Details: As Yamasoth emerged from the Doomsday Door, Laslo raced across the room to destroy the fiery pillars holding up the ceiling and drive the Polymorph Plague back to the Abyss. Unfortunately, this resulted in his receiving a full attack from the Qlippoth Lord, leaving him unconscious and bleeding on the floor. When a part of the ceiling dropped upon him, it pushed him over into death.

Anyway, yeah, rocks fell, and he died.

Name: Szarlej
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Cleric of Cayden Cailean 18
Adventure: Rise of New Thassilon
Location: Emperor Xin's chambers
Catalyst: A whole bunch of Mezlans and a failed save.
The Gory Details: As Emperor Xin fought Alaznist in the background, the party struggled to slay the turncoat Mezlans so that the Sihedron could be forged. Szarlej was first weakened by physical attacks, then blew his save against a lightning bolt which took him down to unconsciousness. Despite a small amount of healing, a second lightning bolt the next round fried him to annihilation, and he disappeared from the altered timeline, whisked back to Sthethelos.

One that both Kyrademon/Ice and I forgot a little while back

Name: Szarlej
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Cleric of Cayden Cailean 16
Adventure: The City Outside Time
Location: The Eye of Jealousy
Catalyst: An angry Shade of Belimarius
The Gory Details: The group entered the Eye of Jealousy and got swiftly attacked by the Shade of Belimarius, which most of them true saw for what it was: an angry Tzitzimitl that quickly used its wail of the banshee on the group. One failed save later and Szarlej was dead. Luckily for him, he was still blessed by Pharasma for having interred dead and desecrated pharasmin priests a few weeks earlier and Pharasma nulled the death effect.

Name: Z Short for something we never learned incharacter and I am too lazy to go find in my notes
Race: Aasimar
Classes/levels: Slayer 12
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: The Little building in front of the bridge
Catalyst: Four angry plants
The Gory Details: Z was scouting ahead invisibly. The plants have tremorsense and attacked. The surprise round was not too bad. One or two hits. Thinking it was not too dangerous, he attacked on his initiative in first full round. Then all four plants went and killed him outright before two thirds of the party could get up to assist.

We did mess up the miss chance mixed with tremorsense, but I am not sure it would have mattered.

Name: Myboy
Race: Human with a Halfling parent
Classes/levels: Ranger 13
Adventure: Temple of the Peacock Spirit
Location: The Jail Level beside the iron maiden rooms
Catalyst: Asura - Upasunda Dhanishiti?
The Gory Details: After resting on the main level, the party pushed down into the jail level to be confronted by several jailor weak asura. The party dealt with them, but they had time to telepathically alert others. The party explored around the outer rooms, passing the bull torture device and entering the iron maiden rooms. Pausing to investigate gave Belevaan time to summon more of the jailor types. While the front line fighters were addressing Belevaan and the jailors, Dhanishiti teleported to rear of party having imbued his weapons with human and Halfling bane. Sliding up to Myboy and a full attack later, Myboy lay quite dead. A breath of life later and he was back in the fight, but he was DRT.

I'll briefly do the players I've killed so far, as a warning to other GM's of the surprising lethality of some encounters.

Group 1
Location: Zincher's Tenement

Brawler level 9: Bravely tried to fight the Nyogoth while flying directly over a hungry pit, while on very low health. You can figure out what happened next.

Warpriest Level 10: After the fight, rushed to get one of the scrolls to use on the brawler, succumbed to the poison and also died.

Group 2

Location: Zincher's Tenement

Kineticist level 9: Stayed solo on the ground floor, so when all the cultists rushed in, all it took was one hold person and a coup de grace.

Alchemist level 9: Stayed solo on the 1st floor, so when all the cultists rushed up, all it took was one hold person and a coup de grace.

Fighter level 9: Stayed solo on the 2nd floor, you can see where this is going, exact same thing happened to them.

Last party member went invisible and threw their bodies into the bag of holding and fled.

Party 2 also got not-quite-tpk'd by Sumsaru and the Mohrg, but he captured them to be bloodbags and thralls. They escaped and tried again, got not-quite-tpk'd and captured a second time.

First 'party' death, despite a number of close encounters for the whole party

Name: Shar
Race: Storm Roc
Classes/levels: Animal Companion of the Inquisitor/Cavalier hybrid
Adventure: The Secrets of Roderic's Cove
Location: The Underflume
Catalyst: Soaking up most of the encounters at once, and the might of Mozamer
The Gory Details: The group snuck into the Underflume and took out the first two horned fang bruisers (Jana had led the other two off to leave things more open for the party). They then triggered almost everything else at once, and eventually Mozamer showed up. He dropped the amazing tank monk into negatives, and the brave animal companion defending here flew up to engage. One round later, a large burst of feathers as Shar made the ultimate sacrifice. Some incredible luck did result in a raise companion spell being available however (so she'll probably grace this thread another time or two in the future).

Name: Zephan
Race: Elf
Classes/levels: 17th level Magus
Location: Zinlun's Tomb
Catalyst: Greg Vaughan
The Gory Details: Not sure if the writers come in and read this stuff but Greg you brilliantly evil maniac I love this dungeon. This is my first time GMing higher than level 17 and it's been a blast, albeit slightly crunchy. Poor Zephan was the guinea pig who had to enter the sarcophagus first, triggering the Targothas in the first room to attack the party. While they were dealing with those monsters, he determined that he could not lift the lid of the sarcophagus to get back to the party and instead had to watch as fossil golems started rising from the tar to attack him. Zephan smartly decided to put up a wall of force. A few rounds later with fossil golems pounding at the wall, the rest of the party started trickling their way through, and that's when Zinlun got involved. He used mage's disjunction on the wall to destroy it and began his next round with a devastating wail of the banshee. Zephan is now dead, another party member was only saved by Pharasma's boon from book 4, the third failed the save but is alive at -10, the fourth succeeded on the save, and the final party member is still on the way from the previous room. Sorry Zephan. See you in the Boneyard (Combat is not over yet, so I'll come back for another post if it continues to go downhill).

Name: Darwin Montenegro
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Unchained Rogue 5 (Knife Master)
Adventure: It Came From Hollow Mountain
Location: the Gryphine inn, Magnimar
Catalyst: Assassination
The Gory Details: Even though they were very upset with themselves and Viralane for the trapped 'gifts', the PCs went to bed in the Gryphine without overly tightening their security. Unless you count a pillow fort. The party did tighten their security by sleeping in the common room together in a pillow fort.

Dith-ka, the bugbear assassin stealthily climbed through the window, snuck next to Darwin, killing him outright (The Fort save required was around 30). A Nat 1 Perception Check by one of Darwin's sleeping party members meant they were still asleep and he got a second coup-de-grace off, but that player's luck was karmic and they got a Nat 20 on the Fort save, or it would have been a double kill.

Before the end of the night, Darwin was raised from the dead at Heidmarch manor thanks to a paid cleric from the Temple of Abadar, with costs entirely covered by the Sihedron Council as an apology for having booked them in the Gryphine in the first place.
