I feel as if I am too young to have children, and am constantly surprised when I find out former schoolmates have them already. I will turn 44 later this year.

Nah. My dad was 56 when I was born and almost 60 when my sister came along. He lived to see us both make it to adulthood and would likely have lived longer had he never been a smoker. A couple of his sisters lived into their 90s and most of the rest of his siblings (he had 14) into their 80s.
How old was your mother?
She was 35. In fact, from my dad's first marriage I have an older half sister and half brother, though he passed away 3 years ago. My half-sister is 6 weeks older than my mom (she passed away in 2002) and is still alive at the age of 91.
Wow Those age ranges are all over the place. Having a daughter that is older then you must be the strangest thing.

The way I look at it...and I'm currently 44 as well...in 18 years do I want to be trying to put a kid through college? No. I want to be retired and driving a convertible on a beautiful day in the middle of the week without having to think about whether or not my boss is going to make my life a living hell when I get back.
She never mentioned it, to be honest. I'm sure that at first, it was, but they became quite close.

When I was little, I wanted to be a Weeki Wachee mermaid. I'm not embarrassed by that.
The embarrassing part is that I am 38, and I have still never been to Weeki Wachee.

This year it will be 40 years since we lived in Florida, for three weeks, until we were forced to flee Hurricane David and our apartment was wiped out.
