It's a sequel, set 30 years after the graphic novel (and definitely the graphic novel, they're ignoring the Snyder movie from what I can tell). That's interesting but I feel a bit of a head-scratcher. Watchmen's biggest sell was its characters, but with the characters dead, MIA (Dr. Manhattan we can assume will show up at some point, but presumably will still be MIA at the start) or very old, it'll be hard to get them into the story. The focus will be on new characters.
I think I'd rather they do a fresh adaptation - the extra time would help - or a closer-in sequel which could use the surviving characters and do something interesting with them.
I also find Lindelof's, "I really respect Alan Moore's artistic integrity and his writing skills and his desire for people not to cash in on his work, but HBO offered me a lot of money so screw that," rationalisations to be a bit iffy.

Not much but it's something.

First Official teaser. Tick Tock
Tick Tock. Tick Tock.
I feel like it’s the Hail Hydra of the series.

Don Johnson is playing Chief Judd Crawford, the chief of police in Tulsa. He could be a retired Nite Owl, but it feels like becoming police chief would mean extensive background checks which would expose his true nature.
Jean Smart is almost certainly playing Laurie, having changed her surname to Blake. I'm going to guess in her case she was recruited by the FBI specifically because of her skillset and past.

I liked the first episode. I still think that
I loved the call backs to the comic and the movie. I'm going to see where it goes.

I haven't watched the show yet, but if the casting is remotely appropriate, and given the choice of those two characters, Jeremy Irons must be Veidt. Very easy to see him playing an amoral super genius.
It's hard to imagine Dr. Manhattan would even be in this show, for at least a couple of reasons: (1) the writers pretty much couldn't allow him to do anything, or he'd be changing the world from week to week; (2) at the end of the comic series, Jon left Earth to find a galaxy less complicated. Why come back after only a few years? Why impersonate a normal human? (3) again, keeping in mind I haven't watched the premiere yet...why would Dr. M need servants, robotic or otherwise?

I dunno about 1, but I thought the answer to 2 is "How do we know this is Earth?"
Occam's Razor. Simpler to believe that what appears to Earth, is Earth-Watchmen (absent Dr. Manhattan) than to suppose it's some other Earth-like world being visited by -- perhaps even created by? -- an unseen Dr. M.

Oh thank you. that makes a lot more sense why there's a dial a dr. Manhattan phone-booth without everyone going into it being lynched.
Is Veidt a clone? I mean if you took a normal person you get the dummy clones, if you took veidt you'd get someone smart but not quite all there smart? (and the game warden is.. another clone?)
What dropped the car at the end? Was that dr. manhatten laughing at the joke or just a coincidence with owlman and company dropping it off?

I dont believe Viedt is a clone at all. I think he is on Mars in some kind of prison isolation like Napoleon Bonaparte. His experiments are testing his ability to escape his prison.

Whoever is working with our mystery man (lou Gosset Jr) seems to have dropped the vehicle. Not sure if Laurie knows who specifically did it, or she is just laughing as she has now embraced being the comedian's daughter.
I do want to know how Chief Judd came into possession of Archie. My theory is that based on the Senators subtle jab at Laurie about "presidents can pardon and release her Owl from its cage" means that nite owl II is currently cooling his heels in some Federal prison. Archie could have been taken in a civil forfeiture type situation which explains how it ended up in Tulsa.
