Do you need to have Expert Proficiency to benefit from an Expert Weapon?

The question is in the subject line really, but to be clear:
If I am only trained in longsword but I have an expert longsword, do I get to take advantage of the +1 or not? I can't find an explicit rule reference but so far it appears no?

You get the full benefits. User proficiency and weapon quality are not related.

That's what I think too, and I'm not disagreeing with you, but do you know if there's a rules reference that states that explicitly?

There is not. They don't usually make explicit all the things that aren't rules, as it would take up quite a lot of space.

For an expert quality longsword, you need expert proficiency in Crafting to make it. Anyone can use that sword to full effect once it is made.
