Eh, I guess we're not using templates, right?

I understand. It all boils down to how each game would be balanced. If you were a lower level than him, you would likely be too weak to participate in most games as a full PC but, if you were not counted as a PC, you would be too strong for the game. I might be willing to make an exception if you were just a familiar, but that would relegate you to sidelines role in games where combat was a thing. What are your thoughts on that?

Honestly? For a play-by-post I could work with just being a familiar, too. Unlike in a face-to-face game, I'm not stuck sitting around doing nothing during combat--I can read through what everyone does and post a brief something about what antics my character gets up to, then go on with my day.

On the other hand, being a 'familiar' who's actually on about the same power level could be fun, too. I guess I'll have to debate about it. :D

You might almost say.... it's a concept you're not familiar with?

Hue hue hue.

Eh, uh... another question...

"Planeswalker" means each could come from a different universe? I mean, one could come from Faerun or Krynn? Maybe Draenor, or even Earth itself?

Or from Star Wars

Is it so? That is awesome!

How would one of those PCs from a distant world be recruited to the Society? I mean, how does this society work? I'm fairly new to this planar shifting thing.

That depends on the template. Templates do cost more than their +CR suggests because of how powerful some are and I will not allow just any template, but I am not outright banning them all. Each PC is limited to one template though.

This campaign will take place in Golarion's canon multiverse. That includes a pre-WW2 Earth, but doesn't extend to other IP universes. So no Starwars, World of Warcraft, Dark Tower, Diablo 3, or other characters. In my own home game canon, Jandelay is the exact center of all realities and joins them together, but the Planeswalker Society is going to more or less play Golarion's multiverse straight. Something like a Silver Age comic-style supersoldier from WW1 or an occultist from London that somehow got sucked through a dimensional rift and arrived in Golarion's multiverse might be permissible, since that era of Earth is canon, but it needs a very good story.

The Planeswalker Society is more or less just a homebrew Pathfinder Society that is in the planes. Baseline Golarion has the PFS, Starfinder has the SFS, and, to me, the planes deserved their own Society. Think of it like an adventurer's guild.

You have plenty of time to mull over your options. The thread is still a week or two away.

Oof! I can just picture the meme dog with that caption!

Alright then, I have a PC that's still at 1st level but... I would love to see how it performs at higher levels, so I'll build a "senior version". I was going to base it on Rokugan, but it'll have to be Minkai, I guess. Once I know more about the PWS I'll be able to detail how he was recruited and so.

Rulewise, I have a small doubt...

The Sage has an option to throw a Ki Blast, which it says counts as a ray. Then the Striker has another option to count a weapon as his unarmed strikes when using class features. I know there's a FAQ implying rays are mostly similar to weapons, so... Is it licit to pick this option and consider "Ki Blast" a weapon when determining Striker class features like Tension, etc? What do you guys think, and what does the GM think?

So... would an Ancient (or Very Old) Gold Dragon be allowed for Master-tier as one side of the Gestalt? Yes, it has DR 15, but I doubt at that level that things that count as Magic would be in any kind of short supply.

The Draconic Exemplar class might fill your needs for dragon-ing.

I've seen it, but it just quite doesn't fit my ideal (I have high standards). Don't get me wrong, it's cool and does a lot of the stuff. But really, any time I see a limited-use breath weapon, I mentally just skip to the next option.

Spheres of Power Shifter class could also fit quite nicely, with the 20th level ability making any shape changes have unlimited duration. At that level, you'd have gobs of traits to put on it (potentially up to Colossal size, wings, DR, lots of goodies), and you would have a breath weapon with unlimited uses, though you can only fire it off once every 1d4 rounds.

I mean, I'm aware of all the ways to *almost* be a true dragon, but if given the chance to *actually* play a completely true dragon, you know I'm going to jump on that chance.

So I’ve got a few utterly nutty ideas for characters. One is a projectionist mesmerist/psion with the body smatcher prestige class, hopping his conciousness between people and items. Another is a psion/ oozemorph shifter, essentially a psychic ooze. The revelation that monsters are available PCs certainly gives me some ideas though.

This is so freaking cool, i'm gushing about this idea, definitely keeping my eyes on this thread.

I am relatively interested and i am a big fan of Spheres of Power/Might myself.

With monster levels permissible, would something like an illithid be doable, and if so, how many levels would i have left to play with? just spitballing but i do love the race.

Very interested.
My first character will probably be spheres shifter on one side, prodigy or hedgewitch on the other side, focused on Alteration (duh) and Life, aiming for roles of melee/buff/heal.

Which tier do you guys look forward to playing the most?

Tenro wrote:
illithid

Here's PF Illithid by DSP. It's not named such as it's product identity of 3.5 and thus doesn't fall under OGL.

Going by official monsters as PCs rules, being CR8, at tier 8 it will eat whole one side of gestalt.
At tier 12 that side will look like illithid 8 / class 5 (1 bonus level for 4 levels gained).
at tier 16, illithid 8 / class 10 (2 bonus levels for 8 levels gained)
at tier 20, illithid 8 / class 16 (4 bonus levels for 12 levels gained). Bonus levels will stop here as 4 is half of 8 (original monster's CR).
That being said, at-will save or die, mind control and teleport are not likely to be allowed as-is.

I'm mostly interested in tier 8, maybe tier 12. The others are too much hassle in gestalt where you end up with hundreds of class features unless one side is a fighter.

Currently looking into a Eldritch Scion Staff Magus // Scaled Fist Unchained Monk. That would be my ultimate Gandalf. The synergy in CHA and Flurry Spell combat (works with unchained, but not core monk) are great, but the best thing is Prescient Attack with Medusa's Wrath.

Yeah, very high levels are difficult to manage for me unless I'm playing the character for long (then you have the time to get used to all its perks as you level - happens the same when I play MMOs). Levels 8-12 should suffice to be very good at whatever you want to do and still enjoy leveling up every now and then. At levels 16-20 I'm sure I would forget to use half my abilities in combat :D

Really high level characters can be fun to build and run once in a while, but yeah, a bit tough to jump straight into. But it's nice to be given the chance.

I'm thinking of simply building a heap of characters for fun and then see which one that appeals to me the most. Or make an attempt to do so anyhow :P

yeah that seems about right. i could see the save or die getting nerfed (like increasing the time it takes to get to the brain) but also making it harder to remove as a counterbalance, or just taking a point of CR away or something.

un-nerfing Scarred Witch Doctor

anyone knows, where I can find the original Scarred Witch Doctor?

Pre-errata Scarred Witch Doctor

If not true Dragons, might vampires/ Dread Vampires (from the Advanced Bestiary) be allowed? I have a level 7 Vampire Mesmerist from an old game that I could bump up to the Novice or Journeyman tiers if allowed. He was an absolutely killer debuffer, and that can only be made more potent with Gestalt.

Anyone else worried?

Nah, still cautiously optimistic here.

Any sort of concrete recruitment were slated for today at the earliest. And I'd expect something of this size to run over the time schedule by a bit anyhow.

Now if it's total silence for another few weeks then I might change my mind.

Maybe the GM fell down the Red Dead Redemption hole?? lol

I know I've been sucked into the Stardew Valley Mobile vortex lately, so a similar situation could be in play.

If Ubo's computer died again, I will personally chip in to buy him a new one. That would be ridiculously bad luck.

Updates

Between work, reconstructing the recruitment, and playing both Red Dead Redemption 2 and the 4K remake of Resonance of Fate, I have not really had time to post. If I go missing again over the next week, try not to worry too much, this is just a lot of work to get done, even moreso than a normal GM's job.

I have roughly fourteen pages of the PDF reconstructed, including most of the lore, GM and PC rules, the big list of what books are permissible, the list of what is nerfed or banned, the list of un-nerfs, and new items for the game.

What remains to be reconstructed are the sections on sample boons and vanities, the adventures I had planned to allow people to vote on for my own game, information on each major plane's lodge, descriptions of rival factions in the setting, and a few other additions.

I will try to check in every so often so as not to worry people overmuch, but I can't make a guarantee of being able to every day because of how much work it is getting that PDF written and polished.

As-written, Illithids are not allowed due to numerous high DC at-will save or sucks, including an instadeath power. Maybe one of the lesser Illithid variants would be something you could look into?

Ubo the Talker wrote:

Would that list include Brawling or Wild armor properties or Unarmored Training combat talent by chance?

Just wanting to comment that I have a lot of character ideas for this for different tiers. XD

Um, what was the nerf to Unarmored Training?

Jereru wrote:
Um, what was the nerf to Unarmored Training?

It used to be 2 + 1/2 AC which was admittedly a bit high, but most importantly it didn't require a second feat and level 8 to work while polymorphed.

Brawling now costs +3.
Wild now (as per FAQ) applies armor check penalty and speed decrease only if you have wild property and thus benefit from armor bonus while polymorphed (magic), on top of still costing +3.

I don't follow anything official as far as errata and such goes, so I don't even know what the nerfs to brawling and wild are...

not really an illithid if i cant eat brains

That's alright. I think everyone's invested in your work and will be patient. I for one have my godling nearly completed. After that, I start work on his profile page, then you can see the work I've done so far.

we should compile a list of interested players and GMs and their prefered tier

Interested, have character ideas for all tiers, if not fully written sheets.

Yup, still wanting to have a go (as a player).

I'm also excited to use this opportunity to churn out a bunch of characters that's been lurking in my concept folder.

I'd probably be interested in running a short scenario in the lower tiers as well.

I have a few concepts kicking around, for several different tiers.

I would also probably be willing to run a scenario at some point, provided I got the inspiration for a really cool story.

I put together a basic spreadsheet for tracking character ideas and GM volunteers. It's open for editing, so feel free to add your ideas.

Hmmm spreadsheets. It's a good idea, but none of my concepts are that concrete yet : )

Hello? Any news around here?

My 8th-level godling submission is 90% completed. I need to refine his appearance, personality, and backstory.

Just on the off chance that this isn't dead in the water - I added myself as a GM volunteer to the sheet : )

Oh, yes, we love you :*
