Suggestions for a Rise of the Runelords character

Advice

Hello everyone and thank you for your time.

Soon I'm going to play in the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, but I don't have any great idea about which character to create for the campaign.
We are going to use Point Buy 20 to decide our ability scores, and have all the official Paizo material's options to select for our characters. Third-party options are not allowed. The alignments are restricted to any non-evil.
The group consists of 4 PCs and 1 GM, one is a ranged slayer and another is a conjurer wizard, while the other player says he can fill any role, thus I'm leaning toward playing a melee warrior or off-combat healer, like a fighter or a cleric.
I want to build a good working PC, which will also be integrated in the adventure setting, so anything with a strong Varisian flavor would be optimal.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

How many other people are joining? If there's no one else I'd say go for the melee cleric, since they're lacking both of those things. A Cleric of Desna fits right in with the region and concept as well as the group's mechanical needs.

Sorry I forgot to say that we will be 4 PCs and 1 GM.

I've already built a cleric of Desna with the Varisian Pilgrim archetype, but I'm not sure it will be a good melee character, not having access to medium armor its AC would be kind of low.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If you want to melee and have some healing...I suggest a battle shaman. Wandering Spirit+Hex offers great utility as you need it. You will have access to some healing abilities as well as the Slumber Hex which is very strong in this campaign.

Shoanti bloodrager? A meleee fighter who channels ancestral magic energy could fit right in here.

How about a Korrvosan paladin, trying to bring civilization and order to this wild region.

A sauntering Varisian free style fighter? Protecting his home land while looking good and wooing the ladies?

The bloodrager might be interesting, but I don't really know how to fit a Shoanti in the story. Why would a Shoanti be in Sandpoint? For the festival? Seems a bit weak of an excuse to me.

The Korvosan paladin might also be interesting, but I prefer to keep this idea for Curse of the Crimson Throne.

The Varisian free style fighter is indeed appealing, but how do I build it?

If a shoanti was of compatible faith and had been in the area for othwr reasons they might seek out the festival is a small town as a more welcoming environment than a larger city?

The free ztyle fighter you build somewhat like a brawler, woth obvious changes for using weapons and armor.

I thought that Shoati only venerates their totems and ancestors, that's why I can't think of how they would fit in the story.

Silver Crusade

The gm can put shoanti background easy with an important npc in sandpoint. If you like the shoanti, ask your gm about link your history to that npc

If you go cleric, Desna is a good choice for deity if you want to tie into the campaign, especially the opening festival. Travel and Luck are a solid domain combo.

You will also be exposed to a lot of lore about ancient societies and their magic, so Nethys could be thematic as well.

There's a lot of delving into the past as the AP goes on, so if you're interested in a Shoanti, one of your ancestors could be related to the plotline.

I'd LOVE to play a cleric of Desna with the Varisian Pilgrim archetype, but I fear it won't be very effective in melee.

You could split the difference and be a Warpriest.

So you need a character that can deliver a whoopin up close and maybe do some healing on the side? This sounds like a job for and inquisitor!

You could just spend a feat to get back the armor proficiency, or you could embrace the light armor and go Dex-based melee.

Also remember that you have a conjurer in the party, so a lot of heat will often be taken off the front line by summons.

Mmm for desna, with starknife, you could be oracle and take divine fight style and the apropiate mistery to get charisma to attack, damage, ca (even initiative with noble scion)...

You could be melee, ranged and healer

The Exchange

Hexcrafter Magus can be a good addition with the hexes from the Healers Handbook.

And you can participate on the arcane magic mysteries of the AP.
