Gestalt class advice for a revamp of an old character.

Advice

Backstory:

Rylar was heir to the throne and beloved hero to his people. He went on a quest to awaken the guardian dragon who had been absent from the lands for a thousand years. As this quest was about to conclude the guardian awoke on her own. She attacked the main city killing the king and queen. Enraged over this betrayal he attacked the guardian and “killed” her.

He then abandoned his claim to the throne and traveled the land slaying dragons in mass. During the most recent quest he learned that it was an imposter who killed his parents and set up the guardian. He’s also learned that those who set up the guardian have taken over his kingdom and now rule as tyrants. Lastly, he learned that the killing blow he delivered to the dragon trapped her rather than killed her. His new quest is to save her and take back the kingdom.

In his first quest he was a paladin. Slaying the guardian caused him to fall, and he spent the next few quests full of rage (barbarian then bloodrager). Now we are starting this new campaign and we will be gestalt characters. He has fought using sword & board and with a two-handed sword.

I'm not sure whether your intent is to redeem the character back as a Paladin, or to continue on the fallen path with the anger angle. You could always just cut it halfway with Paladin//Bloodrager, which should be a perfectly functional gestalt combo. The Vindictive Bastard archetype is perfect for fallen paladins.

If you're looking for more of a redeemed Paladin character, then the Paladin//Sorcerer sounds look a cool approach to me. It's a nice combination that shares a common synergy around charisma. You do run into issues with arcane spell failure, but aside from that hiccup it seems to fit well both in terms of functionality and theme. Paladin//Oracle is a bit more conventional if that appeals to you, but doesn't fit quite as well since you already have some arcane casting in your background with that time as a bloodrager.

Paladin//Skald? Arcane Spell Failure doesn't apply for light (and then medium) armor and you still get some rage and skills.

The intent is to redeem the character. He has recommitted to being a holy type warrior in the name of Bahamut. I was kind of thinking there was too much overlap between paladin and bloodrager, but looking at it again the overlap isn’t that much (Full BAB and HD). He should have small amounts of magic, but not really a full caster. The front line capabilities of the two classes actually seem to match up well.

I’m still not sure what bloodline to use. Draconic is the most flavorful, but the draconic abilities don’t fit well. Abyssal would make the strongest character, but make no sense flavor wise.

Just found the destined bloodline. It seems to fit his play style well while being highly thematic.

Now, I just need to figure out my wife’s character.

Ranger or Slayer//Druid: Full BAB, All good saves, d10 HD, 6+ skill points, Combat Style, Wild Shape, a very versatile 9th level caster, animal companion or domain, lots of class feature goodies.

Not sure what you read in my description that would point to druid. His key fighting style is fighting with metal weapons. He also shouldn't be a full caster.

He traveled with a wolf for a while, but she was really a druid stuck in wolf form.

I'm pretty sold on Paladin/Bloodrager (destined bloodline).

For your wife's character?

Oh, that makes sense. I started another thread for her character though.
