Mystic Heretics: Mystics, Gods, and Alignment

General Discussion

Perhaps this is a misunderstanding on my part, but I couldn't help but notice.

Though not a requirement of the class, Mystics hold a strong(?) connection to the gods in the same way as clerics of old did. Due to that, you'd think there would be some alignment requirement yet there is not. While such an individual could not be a priest as well (to start out anyways, given there are no rules on ex-priests so.. A priest of Asmodeus who transitions to CE or LG.. or further, is still mechanically a priest of Asmodeus), couldn't a mystic follow a deity in some form even though they themselves do not match the requirements of clergy or even follow a heretical view/doctrine?

Am I wrong?
What do you think of this?
Are there any character concepts that this aspect lends itself well to (such as a NG Mystic of Cthulhu, who is convinced he is a CG deity of rivers and dreams)?

Liberty's Edge

Some Mystics hold a connection to the Gods...but not all, and not in the same way as Clerics. They're more like Oracles than Clerics, Wisdom being their casting stat aside.

You certainly can make a more Cleric-y one by taking the Priest Theme, and in that case will need to be within one step of your God's Alignment, but that isn't remotely universal.

Considering the goddess of pure honorable battle, justice and valor is a suggested sponsor of the mind rapist theme, I'd say everything is fair game.

Just going to toss in that my first Priest character is a Technomancer, partially because of the summoning differences. Why wouldn't Triune have robots on call, and why would they have First World creatures?

There isn't an alignment requirement, because each Connection has multiple different options for deific patronage. I would say that, if you want to be a mystic follower of a given deity, you'd better match alignment fairly closely.

Also, there is absolutely nothing against LG in using your mind as a weapon. Making your enemy's head explode with psychic power is no more evil than cutting it off with a sword, and compelling them to obey your commands is exactly as evil as the commands you give.

I'm guessing Voss is alluding to 'exploding someone's head' not being exactly 'honorable battle', not that it's an inherently evil thing. And I'm tempted to agree. Glaring at someone untill their head goes *pop* doesn't strike me as an especially fair fight, if you care about such things.

Exploding someone's head a mile away with your warpshot rifle isn't exactly fair either but I somehow get the feeling that Iomadae sponsors more warriors than just the dudes with plasma swords and phase shields.

I'd imagine honorable combat in the sci-fi era is closer to "Actually follows the space Rules of Engagement and space Geneva Convention" more than "Final Destination, longswords only, fight"

Exactly. Also a strong element of "First In, Last Out," showing due and proper courage on behalf of others. "Fair" doesn't factor in at all. If a fight would only be just if it were 'fair', than its not just at all in the first place, because war isn't a game.
