New Classes & the Fly Skill

Hi, everyone.

When creating new classes (or converting classes from other editions of the Game), are there any guidelines as to when a class should have Fly as a class skill?

So far, as best as I can determine, Fly should be a class skill if that class grants some means of flying. For instance, the druid might transform into a flying animal. While the wizard or sorcerer might cast the Fly spell.

Are there any other guidelines I should be award of?


I don't know the answer, but it's not that simple---bloodragers get the fly spell but do not have Fly as a class skill.

I'm not convinced there is much of a pattern to it.

One reasonable (IMO) house rule is to merge the fly and acrobatics skills. I think it was a mistake to create the fly skill in the first place.

How do you decide whether Acroflybatics is a class skill for classes that get one as a class skill but not the other, like rogue (Acrobatics but not Fly) or sorcerer (Fly but not Acrobatics)?


Make acrobatics (inc. fly/aerial acrobatics) a class skill for either. If it bothers you that casters are getting more nice things make them wait until they can fly I guess.


Is it correct to say that there are no core or base classes that have both Fly and Acrobatics as class skills? It's always one or the other?


Aerokineticists and probably a dozen archetypes have both.

Classes generally get Fly as a class skill if they can gain a major ability to fly.
