Dashing / Phantom Thief - good idea?

Advice

I was looking over the Swashbuckler archetypes and came across the Dashing Thief archetype. Seeing it reminded me of the Rogue archetype the Phantom Thief. I wondered if making a character combining those archetypes would be viable. If nothing else, it would be fun to RP.

This character would probably be best as a Dex build rather than Str. Plus the character would need high Cha, not really for any class features, but just for what the archetypes represent. Halfings actually have the best racial mods of all the core races for those stats. But human might be best for the extra skill point each level and the bonus feat at level one.

Anyone have any opinions?

With a 20 point buy, I was thinking of this as a spread:

8 Str, 16 Dex, 14 Con, 14 Int, 12 Wis, 15 Cha. This is if I go with a halfling as the race.

If I went with a human, I might go with something like this:

9 Str, 15 Dex, 14 Con, 14 Int, 12 Wis, 14 Cha. This comes from dropping Str down to 7 and putting the human's +2 into it.

Since Swashbucklers get Weapon Finesse for free, if I go with human, I can take Weapon Focus Rapier and Fencing Grace for Dex to damage. I'd like to use the Sword Cane for this character, but I can't get Dex to damage with that weapon.

Personally, pure Phantom Thief is probably a safe bet. You get free dex-to-damage in class (at level 3 because you're an Unchained Rogue with the Phantom Thief archetype). You're actually really good at skillmonkey business, and you can mix in bonus combat feats and vigilante social talents as much as you please.

Personally, the Phantom Thief is one of the coolest rogue archetypes I've seen. It trades out sneak attack for versatility in skills and for the potential to be a straightforward fighter type (albeit at medium BAB). My one gripe is that it doesn't count as a Fighter for the purposes of what feats it can choose (such as having Weapon Spec available at 4th level). I'd love it more if it did.

I COULD see dipping Swashbuckler 1 level for the Panache and the like, but you already get weapon finesse for free, so there might be a better option somewhere.

With a human you wouldnt have to dump STR. You could have 10 STR (0 points) 15 DEX (3 points +2 Racial), 14 CON, INT and CHA (all 5 points each) leaving 2 points to give WIS 12

Ah, I was looking at the regular rogue, not the unchained rogue.

That spread could work.

Hey, since I don't need Fencing Grace to get Dex to damage, I can totally use a sword cane if I want. Yeah, the rapier is cheaper, lighter, and has a bigger crit range with the same exact damage, but the sword cane just seems like a fun weapon idea for this character.

Maybe I could make 2 characters, one a Dashing Thief and the other a Phantom Thief. They could be twins. The Phantom Thief would use the sword cane and the Dashing Thief would use a rapier.

The Phantom, being a Rogue, would be a Dex build while the Dashing could be a Str build. Is a Str build Swashbuckler a good thing?

Turns out, if I want my Phantom Thief to use a Sword Cane, I'll have to use the Martial Proficiency feat. Rogues don't have any proficiency with Martial weapons or shields. At least if I go with human for the race, I'll get an extra feat to use for it.

If you're only ever going to use the sword cane and no other martial weapons, you can also go half-elf instead of human and take the Ancestral Arms alternate racial trait.

I guess I could do that, though I'd be losing the extra skill point every level. Though immunity to magic sleep and getting low-light vision would be helpful.
